Sam Argirou I can see the YOLO argument, but you seem to be uninformed as to what he went to prison for. He plead guilty to securities fraud and money laundering (same as Bernie Madoff, for which he is serving the rest of his life in prison, 150 years anyway). The only reason he wasn't sentenced more than 2 years is the scale of the fraud, basically because he hasn't made as much money as Madoff did. But Hollywood tends to portray these scumbags in a positive light, because it's more fun to watch.

Euan Hamilton I think it's just as evil to boil a lobster alive, but it's totally acceptablet in our world. So much hypocrisy. And as I understand it, some employees had "pets" in the office, but it was not because they loved the animals, it was more of an office thing. It was after all an environment of drugs and alcohol, not the ideal place to have a pet you love..
@Bobvanksy10 жыл бұрын
There's a very simple explanation for that, if you owned a cow and sold it to a slaughter house people wouldn't care that much, if you had a cow as a pet and some psycho killed it then ate it people would sympathize with you as the owner. Most people don't put a value on animal life unless we're emotionally convinced it has a relationship with us.

His life in the movie is glamorized and at certain points you really WANT to live his life. But what I love about Scorsese is that he shows it in a way where it's introduced as if he's saying "that's what you want, alright buddy, just try keeping up." Then as soon as a character reaches the pinnacle, there's that downfall which brings us back to reality.

Honestly, this man is a legend. He is not normal by any standards. His manipulating skills and public speaking talent is matched by none, and when you have a skillset like that, the sky is the limit. Jordan Belfort took opportunity as soon as he saw it, because in his mind, he was rich already. He knew that he would be rich, it was just a matter of how fast he would get there and how much he would accumulate. A man like this is one in a million, and a man with the ambition level of his own is one in a billion. He's so full of shit. The whole point of the movie is that he gets off easy. "I was truly scared when I went to prison, but I had forgotten something. I was rich." There is NO sense of his life falling apart. Even with Naomi he doesn't really love her, he loves her sex and the ownership he has over his kids and his possessions, and he hardly gets what he deserves there either. The movie is morally bankrupt, it's meant to be. There is no catharsis, because it's real life, and this is the world we live in.

Sure the movie doesn't really explore what happened to the people who invested with them so I can't really say anything about that one way or the other, but it also kinda seemed that people who struggled got a chance to work there and did pretty good for themselves while it lasted. Ok again I'm not saying he is the nicest guy in the world, but after what's been going on in the last 20 years it was hard not see the movie from that perspective and not just see a hustler who dealt with dollars instead of pennies.

Can anybody write down what the interviewer tells Behlfort in 8:53? I can not understand that chunk. I am not a native English spearker. I would really appreciate it.
@edwinj10 жыл бұрын
He said "Dwarves being thrown onto velcro dart boards, did that happen?" He's referring to the part at 9:15 when the midget (dwarf) is being swung towards the (velcro) dart board.

People who got screwed over shouldn't have bought those crappy penny stocks. Am I right or am I wrong.?
@Texus810 жыл бұрын
You're wrong. Maybe it was a bad decision to buy, but Jordan actively and illegally prevented them from selling those stocks when their value came crashing down. That's not their fault, that's Jordan being a scumbag.
@kellercoleman877210 жыл бұрын
Know your investment before you purchase. SEC Regulation has public companies publish their annual reports for future investors to research. And don't tell me it's not fair for someone to have to read an income statement, if you're gonna buy a portion of a company you should know how to read their income statement (it's pretty self explanatory)
@nateg537110 жыл бұрын
Keller Coleman Jordan also explained in the book and the movie that he manipulated stocks with ratholes and other methods so he (and the strattonites) would be making money.
@kellercoleman877210 жыл бұрын
@nathaneal graham I'm not disagreeing that what Belfort did was wrong. Pump and dump of stocks to maximize profits should not be allowed whatsoever; keep in mind that he did this in the 80's tho... Things have changed drastically because of people like him, and I feel like this movie reinforces the notion that all in Wall Street are corrupt and know something the general public doesn't. The fact of the matter is that there is more regulation in Wall Street than ever before. Just because there are "losers" doesn't mean we should kill the market... People who invest in a company should (and hopefully are) aware that there is a very real chance that there investment could lose them money
@bobtom375610 жыл бұрын
your totally right. Its not all Jordan's fault people need investigate, study a stock, and not jus trust a broker over the phone. people need to be smart with there own money

that movie is like a fractal across the whole gamut of capitalist endeavors, criticize him if you want, but he's only a guy who got caught. everybody, even the feds, are trying to get over in some way. i love jordan belfort, awesome guy, and i view him kind of like family, since i worked at a direct offshoot of stratton oakmont in the 1990s.

I prefer Jordan Belfort to people like Tony Robins. Jordan tells it as it is, has made all the mistakes, all the money, rose dramatically, fell dramatically, he's done it all and clearly has a natural ability to make shit loads of money, make friends and influence people. He knows what he's talking about

People who don't understand psychology and the use of imagery and various other components that can be demonstrated in an array of psychological discoveries and who think that the imagery itself would serve as a warning or something that serves as a bad example, are mistaken. That does not mean that people won't see films that serve as warnings and take it that way. But, it ALSO inspires mimickry in some.

I found not much but this: At the back of the room, a beastly pink-sheet hooker with orange hair and the face of a bulldog was sitting on a bar stool, stark naked and covered in tattoos. Her legs were spread wide open, and a line of twenty naked Strattonites were waiting to bang her
@compguy868111 жыл бұрын
Chuck Norris Right, Chuck: That is all the book states. But, come on -- hookers wouldn't be disgusted by some dog-faced punker forming a waiting line "Airplane"-movie-style, right? Now, Belfort DID write: "In that very instant I became disgusted with everything my life stood for. It was a new Stratton low." So, it seems something EVEN worse happened. (Yeah... now I'd like to know too!) Thanks for the fact-check, Chuck Norris! "Ha-YAH!"

Really disappointed that Dicaprio would praise Jordan Belfort the way he did. He should go meet the victims, and then make that speech...
@colaboytje8 жыл бұрын
This guy has no remorse of what he did. That is clear from this interview. You can see on his face and in his eyes, that he loved what he did. Everytime it was about something not ethical or something disgusting, he lit up. Not for a moment does he show shame. And he has admitted that in another interview. He has no shame for what he did. If he could do it again, I'm sure he would dive in, head first. I can't understand why Leo did that prepared speech about him, and praising him. It seems like that was part of the deal with Belfort in making the movie. 'leo has to do a promotional speech for me'. Not for 1 second do I believe this criminal has changed.
@NLS878 жыл бұрын
then what? you seem to have a problem with people having fun...
@colaboytje8 жыл бұрын
I'm not talking about the fun he had, I was talking about how he destroyed people's lives, how he abused them. The movie doesn't show the victims at all.

I think dicaprio must have based his performance on ray liotta in goodfellas. I just watched goodfellas again & it was basically like leo in wolf if wall street. The way he talks & the manner he talks is so close. Also jordan hardly suffered he went to club fed for 2 years. If he did 20 years hard time I'd say he suffered for his crimes .
