Really really enjoyed the movie. Its like coming up for air after a long time as someone who hasn't seen a movie in a long time other than marvel stuff very occasionally and nope was a really rewarding experience to watch as I put together the thematic and narrative core of the movie and all the bits that I thought were disconnected, come to gather to make a coherent narrative. What I initially thought by the end of the movie was that entertainment and human beings are capable of dehumanizing and detaching themselves from the reality of life thats turned into a spectacle and the cost spectacle has when not approached with humanity and making the trauma and horror therein commercialized and consumable, further feeding into that cycle while building up a hubris that convinces the viewer and the creator that they exist outside of it until its too late. A tale about the exploited and becoming the one who exploit others while imposing an imagined sense of control on the things out of reach and alien to us. Its a criticism of the media spectacle and a comment on how people are capable of detaching themselves from the spectacle. And The ultimate way of avoiding the wrath thats incurred by that hubris, being a refutation of the spectacle itself and refusing to partake in it. Witnessing it and truly understanding it, and choosing to say "Nope" with the greater understanding and escaping that cycle before it consumes you

Here’s the 1st two paragraphs: “A screaming comes across the sky. It has happened before but there is nothing to compare it to now. It is too late. The Evacuation proceeds but it’ll all theatre. There are no lights inside the cars. No light anywhere. Above him lift girders old as an iron queen, and glass somewhere far above that would let the light of day through. But it’s night. he’s afraid of the way the glass will fall-soon-it will be a spectacle: the fall of a palace. But coming down in total blackout, without one glint of light, only great invisible crashing.”

@@cyrollan i agree with but not because I think black people are just naturally more talented but because the barrier for entry and success for black artist is much higher and harder so there are millions of horrible black artists whether it be in music or film or whatever but you know just the fact that a black artist has made it and become successful it wasn’t because he had connections or who his parents were or because he fit the all american or hollywood look

I like how they ended talking about genre. I didn't really pick up on the whole "spectacle" angle that Peele keeps talking about (at least not in the same metaphorical way he talks about it... I mean it's clear in the film, but didn't necessarily feel like the focus). My first thought when discussing it with the folks I saw it with was how it was an interesting mix of genres. It doesn't really fit neatly into any one genre. It's part horror, part heist, part documentary, part drama, part comedy. It's all of them at once. It was INTERESTING, which a lot of movies just... aren't. They'll get you your thrills, but they won't do something new that makes it feel unique when compared to others. That's what Peele does well. Get Out was interesting for how it spun horror with sci fi and a huge focus on social commentary, with a masterful mix of comedy thrown in (as all the best horror movies do; see, e.g., Evil Dead, Cabin in the Woods). Us was interesting in that it showed that new slasher films can still work without relying on older IPs (although I'll say that, for me, Us is the least interesting of his trio so far, just because it didn't play with genre as much). NOPE is great. It's memorable. In a sea of endless spinoffs and sameyness, a movie being memorable is just about the best accolade it can receive.

1:42 'This is a society of spectacle' Nailed on and also a reference to Guy Debord's seminal work on mass consumption of media. I wonder if he's referencing that. That book forms a huge part of what made Black Mirror a very great series.

Jordan didn’t say it but strongly hinted that Nope is an Ode to Michael Jackson and every child star past, present, and future working Hollywood. The idea that our human nature is fascinated with the rise and fall of celebrity.

@@nyneegardner6235 This was better than his last movie, but not that deep. There wasn't very much character development.

If you notice, there was not one single minority which was in control or represented a successful narrative in the film. Both horses and African Americans were both brought to America by Europeans. What did the chimp represent?

I still think about the horror of “Nope”. Horror on a different level. Not necessarily more horrifying, but let’s just say the message was sent.
