Dr. Peterson does a great job of generalizing very personal feelings. Its nice to know that everyone goes through the same feelings when confronted with difficult opportunities. If you convince yourself that it is a special circumstance, you may be inclined to "make an exception" for yourself. Recognizing that everyone goes through the same conflict may just help you push ahead of it rather than throwing in the towel preemptively.

One thing I learned as a failing student to a A plus student is that intelligence isnt based on your test scores. Intelligence is the way you combat your internal emotions and the way you challenge thos challenges into making better outcomes with critical problem solving skills. The way I went from failing to passing is practice, recall, analyse, and just told my self to do it. If others can do it you probably can to. Dont let your gaurd down. And dont beat your self up.

I've always used the scientific method as a way of looking at life. When you test a hypothesis, you step through possibilities and correct things based on outcome and evidence Life is the same way. When you do something that fails, it's important to not focus on the failure itself but rather the reason behind the failure, and correct it based on the evidence you find.

if its any consolation, people tend to associate 'intelligence' with letter grades- when really they have almost nothing to do with one another. The only relation they have, is that higher intelligence allows someone to learn, retain and apply information my quickly than others. (think of it like having more RAM on a computer. Yeah school isn't for everybody. I dropped out of college because I hate being taught something by someone especially something I don't want to learn. Instead I learned how to start my own business and do something I love which is art. What I learned from self teaching myself was learning how to get better at something and how to improve, rather in school it's learn how to memorize. It's a nice feeling fail at something compared to school. When you fail you know you can improve and your going the right direction. But in school failure isn't so good. Your parents and teachers scold you asking you "you have no future". School can teach you a lot stuff too like how to manage time, how to memorize things more effectively and drama.

I had to repeat a year of college. The entire experience was horrific. At that stage in life I was still low on meaning, drive and purpose in life. I was still bouncing walls. What I can tell you is that I managed to remount myself and finish my studies and what I learned on the way is more important to me than the knowledge taught in the classes. I learned about things in life that straight A students maybe will never know because they will never be in a situation like that. Not saying you should flunk your exams, I'M saying that being in such a low point in life and managing to climb your way out of that makes a person stronger. Beware that the saying "what doesn't kill you, makes you stronger" is wrong or better say incomplete. I might've as well raise my arms and quit and who knows where I might've end up. Just by getting out alive from a bad experience is not enough. There are people who can't recover from something bad that happened to them and God, family, friends or doctors can't do anything for them.

Almost in the same situation. Its weird what runs through your head. And when tough times hit and the people around me struggle or crumble and my mindset is 'meh, not the first time shit happened'. Then I go on and power through situations that I know would have broken the younger me before all the knocks life was given. The thing is bad things now could prepare you for a larger better success that you then need to be able to handle. So connecting to your final sentence, when no one can help you. That's when you as a person needs stand up and fight for yourself.

Repeating coursework in school because you didnt quite grasp it the first time was your "low point" in life talking bullshit about "making it out alive" when there are 18 year olds at war, people dealing with the loss of a loved one, search and rescue crews performing CPR for hours on a Dead child in the wilderness knowing full well they cant be resuscitated. @@thaidesigns9138 I retook the class this semester and passed it with an A. It’s ok to fail as long as you learn from it and do better next time. Retake it and give your all this time, and everything will be fine. If you’re planning on applying for med school, I talked with some doctors and they told me that a failed class is not a big deal, but they want to see that you do better next time and can prove to them that you can handle med school. If other people can do it, so can you! Just remember that it’s ok to fail, we all fail at some point in our lives!

This came up on my recommended and I’m happy it did. Last semester, I took a precal course and my first exam was a 57%, I felt so ashamed of myself and I was filled with anxiety, especially since I had just started my first semester in that college (I graduated from a 2 year community college). But then my next exam I got at 69% and with some extra credit I got a 5% boost. Third exam I got a 90, and the second around an 80. I always dropped the course and fell into a pit over that first 50, but then I ended up getting a B. Now I’m in calculus and I just got my first exam, 50%. Thanks for the KZbin algorithmic system for recommending me this. I’ll keep pushing forward.

Well the dumb thing is, I study a lot everyday and most of my time in my day were spent trying to understand physic's concepts, practice doing mathematics and memorizing biology facts. But I failed those class! I used to fail a lot in high school. Because most of my time were spent doing anything other than studying. It seems to me now that, studying and not studying doesnt make a difference. I ask for consultation from my lecturers and ask for extra exercises. They expected me to do very well in my examinations because I always send my work in time, I ask a lot, I practice a lot. Well, the look of disappointment in their faces when they found out about marks really hurt me. Im just dumb and below the average. I dream of becoming a veterinarian and I know I have to work hard and go through many failures in life and school to achieve my dream. But I'm getting very very exhausted. At school and later in my college, I used to be a high scorer but things took a 180 degree turn when I got into the university life. I have failed in 16 subjects and failed again in many of them while repeating and failed thrice in a couple of them but the good thing is, I never gave up or even think of quitting. Sometimes, we understand a subject more than anyone in the class but perform terribly in exam. One simple solution to tackle this situation is to waste lesser time in just understanding and put more time into the exam perspective. Check for the past/previous papers from the previous sessions prepared by the same teacher for the same course. You'll get an idea what is required in the exam for the most of time. Give extra attention and solve the previous papers. Talk with your seniors and learn the psychology of the teacher. You'll get better grades and much more easily. Secondly, practice the problems by hand as much as possible. Best of luck

I can only surmise that it may be a combination of his speech-form, the way he presents himself in an aesthetic sense I suppose, and my acknowledgment that he is a well-cultured (if the word were to mean anything at all) and well-read man, which is the type of persona I look up to. I can only wish to one day be able to even partially emulate that type of influence and put my own personal spin on it, for I love the notion of being able to teach others the knowledge I've accumulated, and in turn being able to positively affect the lives of the people around me through that avenue.

I once, through some bad choices such as initially choosing the wrong major (ended up hating it) and going on an academic exchange on the 2nd year of my third choice major (but which I was loving and still love), ended up losing 2 years of my life, just wandering desperately and desolately. Those 2 years taught me more about myself and the world and life than I would've ever learn at university. I wouldn't change it. University is good for some kind of training (I study engineering), but most kids there wouldn't know how to react in the best way possible given the circumstance if faced by the failures of life that we all go through as stepping steps. Today, I know I've grown, seeing how I would act different, maybe better, when faced with uncertainty, than before. All can be a lesson if you're determined to overcome the obstacle.

I might discover that my choice of underwater basket weaving over engineering is a poor one. Reversing course/quitting/changing majors is a good choice. Yes, that's correct. What he said does not limit the reasons of no effort. In fact he already did cover that right after. Amount of effort is merely a scale that ranges from 0 to infinite. You can be a 0 out of laziness, or 0 because you are a capable person who decided to input no effort without the small tinkling feeling of doubt.

There is a danger of that fallacy in such situations, but the analysis is not as simple as, "is there a better option?". If you've already sunken time, energy and resources into one course of action, you may not have those resources available to use on another, and hence it's better to stay with your current course than fail at another.

This is what the world needs. Everyone experiences these feelings, very little know how to properly deal with them. That calls for someone to explain how to deal with such events! Why is there such a lack of content in this category?! Imagine if JP hadn't blown up because of politics! This actually helped me reframe my situation and break out of the negative spiral I was going down during this entire term. After taking a step back and looking at my new required courses needed to complete my major as I had changed it at the beginning of the term (but unsurprisingly the school only updated their systems to reflect said change near the end of term) and am now able to do things I wasn't able to before and more importantly, drop a course that was no longer mandatory to take. Now I have freed up so much time to actually finish the rest of the courses I have for this term and will take a different make up course for the summer. Fortunately, I have put myself in the financial position to take these kinds of hits, so all that negative spiraling was all for naught. I'm really glad youtube put this video into my feed when searching for advice on failing classes because sometimes having someone to remind you that all you need to do is lay out all your options and go through them one by one is all the push you need to realize that you're not doomed, you just need to try a new approach.

I recently failed Composition 1 for the second time. This is only my second semester and I'm in community college so I get this feeling like something is wrong. My first semester was a 16 week and about half way through I stopped going because I lost all motivation for that class. I retook it this semester for the 8 week session to see if that works. I'm gonna sign up again for after spring break for another 8 week class so I can finally move on to Comp 2. I like college, at least I don't struggle so hard in my other classes like I do in this one, and it's not really that I suck at writing (even though, that is true too) I just can't motivate myself to write, even when I sit down with zero distractions and focus souly on that work. I hate this class, but I know I have to get past it so I can do the ones I actually want to do.

I completely understand. For now, English is my intended major, but I have no motivation for my current class. It's all about research papers and I just can't force myself to write out those out. By the looks of it, I'm going to fail and have to take it again. I'm more of a creative writer, but I have to pass my current class in order to take an intro class on creative writing. I understand where you’re coming from. I’m currently failing composition 2 due to a complete lack of motivation. I can’t focus when writing and just find essays mind numbingly boring. This is a big dilemma for me. How do you know when you're being lazy or you've actually lost passion and shouldn't be compromising your time for something you don't enjoy? I guess it depends on how much value you place on the desired outcome. But does anyone really want to do anything difficult? I want to drop my calculus class because I'm failing and have forgotten most of the prerequisite material. It's tough whenever you don't know whether failure should be a point of redirection or motivation to work harder. I thought about being an engineer, but now I'm reconsidering, and I don't know if this is a sign that I should do something else I actually enjoy, or if feeling uninterested and detached is just part of it.

I was in the last class I needed to have a minor in math. It was very difficult and thought I’d have to drop it but decided I’d through some good effort into it anyways since if I pass it I’ll have that math minor. Managed to pass the second exam and stayed in the course. Wasn’t that interested in the material but I’m glad I made myself get through it. Later on in grad school I signed up for this chemistry class which I did end up dropping even before the first exam. In this case I already was having a pretty loaded semester and felt even if I were to put the effort into it it would leave me with pretty much no time left in the day. Also I was not interested in the material and did not see it helping me get anywhere, so I dropped the course. Just my experiences with class dropping.

Heh, I've dropped so many classes while attending junior college. I did eventually get a degree, but it's worth saying that some teachers just aren't great at presenting information. I had a calculus teacher that would repeat the same thing when you didn't understand a concept, without any variation, utterly useless for teaching me. I found more help at khan academy online than that particular professor.

Was in a terribly bad place at university after the 2nd year...went to about 20 percent of the classes I had and in my disorientation I managed to scrape through the dirt and landed at the feat of my final two senior courses. GPA was too low so they understandably guillitined me. I'm not sure if I was clinging to a severely compromised frame, abandoning ship, or dancing between their murky waters. Dont do that. It sucks.

Aside from the philosophy advice we receive from watching these lectures I very much appreciate the sociological perspective. Why we do the things we do and how our minds work. To paraphrase if there is an issue we can't deal with for whatever reason, perhaps it is destructive to our own identity, we move up the chain of importance and try to obliterate the higher reasoning so we don't have to deal with it. So the people who are lazy and can't deal with the fact that they are lazy will move up the chain because they can't accept that they are lazy and that THEY need to change and obliterate that reasoning. "Well it's not my fault; it is 'X's' fault" It seems like this is the reasoning people who believe in the patriarchy use. It isn't my fault I can't do 'X' or 'Y' it is the patriarchy's fault. Next is the idea of why I hate swimming in lakes. I'm pretty sure there are no carnivorous fish in there, but I can't see everything and I'm not in a domain where I am ABSOLUTELY in control. I'm out of my element and as the controlling person I am it feeds into my discomfort. So I dislike it when my ordered world is thrown into disarray, because I seek structure and order. It is this rigidity of habit that keeps my habits, good or bad, very strong.

Sometimes dropping a course is necessary because there is such a huge emphasis placed on GPA and maintaining as high a GPA as possible or you’re fucked, etc. with future programs. there’s a lot of pressure placed on the way a transcript looks, and that’s why dropping a class sometimes is the best thing to do.

Here's me in my college experience; whenever it seemed like I wasn't doing good in a class by the time we took our first exam, and I failed that exam - I dropped it...and I'm glad for it, because that saved my grade point average. AND it cleared up the time that I would've had to spend in that class, which allowed me to both focus on my other classes more or have more leisure time to handle the work-load better. The only semester where I COULDN'T do that, because the bookstore screwed me over, I ended up failing a class. But that was years ago, and I've long since gotten past it. And I've continued to drop classes that I didn't like and didn't care about almost every semester, and always felt better for having done it. Now here's the conundrum I'm in...I'm in my final semester and my family is expecting me to graduate, and because it's kind of a complicated process, I've had to get help from them to figure everything out. And worse, my father who lives in Mexico is taking a plan THAT weekend to be there for my graduation. And the senior seminar I'm in is taught by a leftist professor that I hate, because she keeps inserting her politics into the class and she LIES about a whole lot of things - Lies I've caught her in and called her out for - so much so, that I tend to tune her out, if I bother showing up to class at all... The thing is, I know that ignoring her and not showing up to class is not good for my ability to pass the class, but I honestly can't stand her as a professor. Plus the topic that we have for our final paper feels mind-numbingly mundane that I can't believe it's for - not just a college-level course - but for what should amount to be my FINAL college-level course. And yet, she's treating it like it's somehow going to be a difficult thing, and keeps assigning tertiary assignments, just to force students to actually do research on this topic before the final paper is even assigned yet. I can't stand it. At present, with me ignoring this woman and being psychologically drained by the sight of her and sound of her voice, I think I might have to accept that I won't be graduating this semester, so sorry dad, but god forbid you get on a plane to spend time with your son for Christmas without him having to graduate, huh?

@@fbiclose6874 I don't know how legitimate your comment is, but I'm going to reply as if it is: I know in high school it seems like the entire world is what your world is, it feels like school, grades, and friends are everything, but it's not. I'm sorry to hear that you had a bad semester, and I know that has some unpleasant consequences, but you can come back from this. It might feel like everything is out of control, but if you break it down piece by piece, it becomes less scary. One semester of failed classes likely won't delay your graduation, I don't know how your school's scheduling works, but you likely will be able to make it up over the summer or instead of elective classes. Failing several classes will likely have hurt your GPA, that's not everything. What college you go to does not matter nearly as much as the school system seems to think it does. But break that down even further - what do you want to do? Do you need a 4 year degree for that or a 2 year degree, apprenticeship, or something else? Facing your parents likely won't be a fun time, and I don't know what your parents are like, but having a plan going forward will likely help. (i.e., this is what I will do differently next semester to have a better outcome.) I don't know your individual circumstance, and I'm sorry that you are in the position you are in, but you will be okay, you will be able to come back from this. High school is only 4 years of your life, you have everything ahead of you still, things will get a lot better. That may not seem like it means a lot coming from someone who left a comment saying she failed her first exam in one of her classes, and that's fair enough, but it's also coming from someone who is near the top of her class, and applying to medical schools. The world does not end with one bad semester.

When I was in college you needed 15 credit hours per semester (4 semesters per year) for 4 years to graduate with a Bachelor's degree. I always took 18 credit hours with the knowledge I will drop the worst class. The other classes I would buckle down on. There is no issue dropping a class. Heck, I dropped classes several times (sometimes more than once) and still graduated in 4 years because I always kept 15 credit hours.
