EXACTLY. He acts completely ignorant toward the fact that the economy grew post-WW2, which was when most of our parents entered the job market, and then he acts like the 2008 crisis never happened. yes i have it better than my grandparents, because my maternal grandparents lived during the Great Depression and my paternal grandparents lived in a rural Italian village during the rule of Mussolini. but no fucking way do I have it better than my parents, who, number 1, received a completely free education under Gough Whitlam's government, which was a window of about 8 years in the 70s. number 2, back then two teacher's salaries were enough to buy a house that is today worth almost 4 million dollars, whereas my generation can barely afford to rent a one bedroom apartment while studying and working full-time, and there have already been studies showing that we will be the first generation to not have a retirement plan nor be able to become homeowners - we'll have to rent our whole lives. See, this is the reality of millennial life in Australia. That's where I live, that's where Rubin's talking, and it's almost offensive to me that its SO obvious he did zero research on the issues facing the people he's talking to. He even paints these uni protests as deranged and unhinged, while the closest example I can think of is a student walkout scheduled for tomorrow at my uni, University of Sydney, aimed at pressuring action on climate change in preparation for this month's state election. That's the most reasonable student protest I can imagine, and it's our everyday reality. Rubin has somehow got his head stuck inside a fictional hellscape that Sargon pulled out of his ass back in 2014 or something.

Thing is... Jordan Peterson, as absurdly wrong as he is about everything, is a relatively well-read well-educated guy. I really hope when he looks at Dave Rubin, he thinks to himself "These are the idiots the world has clumped me up with? What has happened to my life?" And yes, Dave: I'm doing worse than my grandparents. My grandparents could pay for college in its entirety with the wages of a summer job. The economy of the post-WWII era was the largest and longest lasting economic boom in U.S. history (ya'know, when the top marginal tax-rate was like 90%). Worker productivity has surged over the past few decades while wages have remained stagnant (our generation is working longer and harder hours and seeing none of the fruits of that labor). Climate change is eviscerating the planet as we speak. Our economy is still reeling from the effects of the Great Recession, many families needing to juggle multiple low-wage jobs just to barely keep up with the cost of living. The poverty rate is 4 points higher than it was in 1973. God, I could go on and on. The big problem Rubin fails to see is that, yes, technology has advanced rapidly, revolutionizing the way we connect and communicate, but that technology has not translated into less work. It was once believed that by this time, we'd be working like 10 hours a week because of how advanced technology would become. Instead, it appears that we're working more for lower pay. It's one of the most absurd contradictions of late-stage capitalism. What is the point of technology if it's not to make our lives easier? Capitalism relies on labor and has turned to generating countless "bullshit jobs" to keep the system functioning the way it does.

She was on a bus and years before that they didn't have buses therefore Rosa Parks wasn't oppressed, she was just entitled. - That's logic! Facts don't care about your feelings. OWNED LIBTARDS!

I love when speakers pull out their smartphones to illustrate the point that everyone owns a smartphone. It’s always effective and dramatic.

Rubin said is 100% correct. This video is nonsense. He said he said that being free, the irruption of social media and constant contact with it creates an artificial sense of crisis and emotional response because you are showered with information designed to capture your attention via outraged. Both Left and Right have become polarize to an unbelievable degree because of it and living in an echo chamber dehumanizing their political opponent and that leads to extremism. His point is not only clear, but true. I find astonishing that this video makes sense to anyone, specially because it is a phenomenon to which science has a description and a known diagnosis.

Rubin: It’s annoying how people are always competing to see who is the most oppressed! Also Rubin: Who’s been more oppressed, you or your grandparents!?
@ElReyEnAmarillo5 жыл бұрын
The point is consistently ridiculous. To frame marginalized people in a way that makes it seem like they WANT to be oppressed/discriminated against is horrendous. People don’t revel in being treated badly. So to say that people are actually actively, gleefully competing to see who gets treated the worse is absurd. And then to say that even if it was a competition, other people have had it worse so your not allowed to complain, really shows Rubin’s inability to see people with problems as just that, people with problems. He only seems to be able to see them as competitors for attention.

@@wagner9527 you can have an iPhone and still be dirt poor. Maybe someone gave it to you or you bought it on credit, we need to stop associating true wealth with material possessions.

@@bumpyinspace_ Not so poor, speacially in Countries in develpoment with shit currencies a Iphone is equivalent to some minimum wages (I dont believe rich people deliver iphones neither), but the thing is, in the past generation people weren't able to afford an old Telephone, now their sons and grandchild carry computers in the pockets. It's the opposite, wealth is not about the zeros in your bank account but about your purchasing power. A mountain of cash in Venezuela worth nothing.
