Carl Rogers was a great believer in the wisdom of the body, an idea approximately equivalent although more concrete than Carl Jung's idea of the Self. He was an advocate of the therapeutic utility of genuine, honest communication, and a pioneer of the idea of self-actualization.

And the lectures are so versatile, and relevantly informative, that you can watch each one as many times as you like and still find something new. I often find myself having “shower thoughts” while listening to JBP (those highly open, sometimes revolutionary ideas one typically gets while in a warm shower)

I have gone through your 2015 "Maps of Meaning" and am slowly working through these lectures as well. I have found immense insight into my life after watching these. I also had a deep conversation with a desperate friend last week, and did nothing other than truly try to listen, and then repeat in the proper form what I had heard here. It was a moving experience, and I think made both of us better people, while helping him with issues that were deep seated. There have been other discussions I have had with other people, at least one of which had me send someone who was interested to this channel. What I am trying to say is thank you, but I just wanted to put a little context behind what those two words mean. For every person willing to put in the time to listen to these lectures, there are so many more people that can benefit.

A very interesting side note to the study on the importance of smell (mentioned at 1:00:05) - The women who couldn't accurately detect a symmetrical mate by smelling the T-shirts happened to be the women who were on birth-control. FASCINATING.

39:00 Rogers thought the therapeutic relationship was therapeutic to the therapist as well. Also explains why some people don't want to listen: they are or must be changed by the listening.

Great video! Reasons I "liked" it.... "Honest integration matters".... "Why would anyone think they can bend the structure of reality and get away with it?".... "The pathway to correction is dialogue/communication".... "If you're not capable of murderous fantasies, I would actually say there's something wrong with you...There's something missing." ...the example of partners negotiating who should make dinner... also loved the bent ruler analogy. I hope (and almost believe) this is true.

Having had a very serious encounter with a psychopathic narcissist, I am so glad that someone is defining and validating that these people are among us. Jordan Peterson's clarity is amazing, congrats to those who took his classes. So fixing the problem and not the blame on the other, requires me/us to help the fumbling critic articulate the real character flaw they trying to bring forward. Wow! We would have be able to discern whether or not that this critic is a narcissist or someone with conscience. If the person is a narcissist the context of an intimate vs casual vs stranger in this situation complicates it for sure, but at some level the core is the same, deception and emotional vampirism. Argument versus an ethical negotiation with a narcissist seems still to be trying to create a mutually beneficial outcome with someone who is a spider in human disguise.

Ctpsd manifestations are just primitive humans and their main goal is usually power and control. They instinctively distrust everyone and are proper mentally ill. This world doesn't make sense to them.. Mafia families would make sense to them. Most mental illnesses are inter compatible with each other as in people with mental illnesses understand the insane but the sane is seen as insane. Basically boils down to neo cortex dominant humans and limbic system dominant humans.. we're two different human types each very mentally damaging to the other and we don't even know about it. But in a 100 years hopefully this will be common knowledge and there will be some sort of a solution to it. Good luck to the ones that aren't aware tho.

@@007lutherking Yep, great reply! "Neo cortex dominant vs mid brain limbic dominant.... two different human types... " Thank You Clarence. I don't know if we will make it 100 years with these ones without conscience at every controlling bottle neck of temporal power. One thing is for sure, these limbic types recognize power and they are not likely to invite a mutually beneficial 'live and let live' resolution between our types. The attitude adjustment alone, for the survival of the species, would require a massive reasoning, where the narcissist type would have to let go of the, "Are you Dinner or am I?", outlook on every human exchange. Fuel, Appliances and no nagging conscience about anything, that is hard thing to give up and grow from.

I'm a very big procrastinator and I ususaly leave my responsibilities to the last minute because I strugle to get motivation to do stuff I don't want to and only by nearing the deadline of my responsibilities I start to work on them. However thanks to youtube recomending me random Jordan Peterson's videos about topics that I find interresting I have gain interest in studying and reading articles for my exams because in a way Jordan ends up motivating me to learn about a variety of topics that can then be used to motivate me to study my own articles since I study Psychology and in some way it is all related. So whenever I have to study and read articles I just browse youtube untill eventualy I find a Jordan's video about something that I might find interesting and then I just pause the video when I feel "satisfied" enough and go on to study my own articles for the exams in the hopes of finding there pieces of information as interesting as the information Jordan shares, through his speech in these videos. So in a way he is helping me to find different alternatives to making me study

Having read Rogers I can't help but think that parts of the description of his person centered therapy are misrepresented. Rather than adopting someone else's perspective it seems as if Rogers wanted to create a space without expectations in which someone could take off the masks they put on to appease other people to find who they are. Whether this makes sense or is reasonable or even possible, it seems as if that is what he thought of his work. And that is where the trope of "and how does that make you feel" comes from. The clinician doesn't or cannot access the mental state, but rather allows the patient to build it (or for him uncover it perhaps), perhaps in the same way you might give a child the room to become themselves. I'm not a psychologist or a clinician, but that's what I remember from reading him years ago.

It’s both positively impressive and saddening this only has 170,000 views. The idea that the self doesn’t understand it’s reflection, and being logically dominant comes with emotional, pathological, impulsive sub currents. That in order to have peace and stability one must attempt to control impulse honestly while aiming at a collective good faith with your companions…. And perhaps against yourself pathologically because the self may not be consciously aware of the motivation behind the behavior…Blind… Not only has your lecture revealed to me my own blindness, but reveals just how easily blinded one can become if we don’t consider the smallest logical decision. I thank you, and all the referencing authors surviving good faith and efforts.

Amen to that, Bro, amen to that. Due to my beginnings in life, I was the type that tolerated narcissists and abusive behavior endlessly. I think one of the many vitally important things good parents can do for kids is to educate them about when to write off a narcissistic "friend". For lack of that instruction, a person can suffer tremendously, for decades and decades.

at 1:05:00 Jordan talks about an experiment to use during an argument. The exercise was to restate the ideas and feelings of the person who has just spoken and also to have 1 person speak at a time. 100% I use this during complaints processes when I'm speaking with Business Owners, CEO's, Directors, etc. It works. I don't use it as an experiment but mostly as a way to negotiate and de-escalate problems and issues. I get a large amount of positive reinforcement in my abilities of negotiation when I can finesse an angry client into not getting worse and also for finding a solution to their problems and issues. It's also rewarding. You would be amazed at how far you can get in corporate when you take these issues off line managers, general managers, or directors in your organization. They are the best kind of favors that everyone wants to get rid of. If you equip yourself with this skill, plus do any side projects that others hate, and then over deliver on it, you'll find yourself progressing very far in your career, or in business for that matter.

1 tip about who's going to cook dinner. Have a freezer if you can down your basement or wherever and keep a baked ziti or rigatoni or lasagna or two and a couple of uncooked meatloaves that you can pop in the oven. Homemade of course. Then you can put a few baked potatoes in the oven 6 minutes a piece don't go over 15 minutes at a time or you'll blow a fuse. If you cook chili cook two batches and freeze one. You might want to put them in smaller container so you don't have to throw a giant one. Same with spaghetti sauce. Works with homemade soup too, but if you use rice, make sure you use converted or parboiled rice it'll hold its shape and not get mushy. Then there's always the Crock-Pot what a great invention it Cooks while you're out.

Peterson emphasised that one needs a developed persona in order to function in the social world, however as far as I can see it, the persona looks to be inextricably linked with the implementation of white lies or other more innocent acts of deception. So how does one deal with that?

+Jordan B Peterson English is my second language, but I will write a few lines anyway, Hope you get the gist of my comments. In regards to a way of being honest, it surely refers to a dynamic and respectful ongoing stance towards others and your self, but also I would like to ad courage. Hiding, cheating or the like dishonest characteristics have much to do with fear, to me dishonesty can be represented with a mask, and the mask is not only supportive of criminal intent, but arises from an almost instinctive desire for survival... dishonest individuals in many instances are protecting their fragile core unable/unwilling to invest enough life on a common path with others or self for that matter... ? No, it's just a habit of mine to try to see if I can tell by syntax and stuff. Your English writing is actually better than many born speaking English. It's interesting to me though that I thought I detected Spanish. Becuase Arabic has a huge etymological influence on Spanish

Trying to understand the private world of a psychotic is like starting into the abyss.. look long enough and it'll stare back and you'll be lost in some deep dark frozen pit inside your own twisted brain and then your options progressively become very limited from that point on. Like solving a puzzle with blindfold on.. You're gonna have to use the eyes and will of your conscience... and if you're lucky enough you wouldn't have so thoroughly corrupted and violated your conscience that it's of little utility to you now. Then God save you and God save whoever you encounter..

Nothing like watching a man with a dignified, high-pitched voice have both sides of the "who is going to cook?" argument at the top of his lungs to reach the back of a shitty university classroom.

I got to cough in a university once. I'm so proud of myself. I sat in on one visiting my cousin.

Look at the comments to see funny commentary about the tangent into who cooks dinner, sees comments about the chewing, now I only hear chewing. Damnet.

Is it just me or is the speaker picking up on sounds from another person? It sounds like chewing gum or a stuffy nose; very distracting.

I have misphonia so such things would normally drive me apoplectic with rage but I was watching this on my phone as I was working. I think the combination of lower fidelity audio and mild distraction prevented me from being triggered. I'm saying all this because this lecture is too good to miss, please try again(with appropriate precautions)
