Mate, I owe you! This video saved me a trip to the shop. bike wouild not start, fuel pump dead. It ended up being the rear 30 amp fuse! Pulled it out, checked continuity and put it back in. Brmmm, and away she went. Thanks so much👍

Love the video! My Brother in Law and I have been trying to figure out what is causing my V Star 1100 to not get enough fuel. We think we found the issue at the Fuel Pump. We noticed that over time the pump got much louder when priming and it seemed to always lag behind when getting on the throttle. We might have to go back and undo the gas lines to see how much it’s actually pumping, but huge props on the video! You have made my life much easier as a first time motorcycle buyer!

I live in Germany and recently had my XVS 1100 Dragstar classic (European version of the V.Star) in the shop because live the bike in the video I had let it sit for a few years and the gas turned to slop. I had the bike towed there in order not to gunk up the fuel system with the old gas. The shop supposedly overhauled the carbs, adjusted the valves and installed a new peacock. When I picked up the bike it seemed to run pretty good, not great but good. But gradually the bike started having issues and it got to the point ( after only 600 kilometers) that I needed to drive with the choke on all the time. Long story short, i brought the bike back and explained what was happening and they told me that I was to blame because i only drove 600 kilometers in 3 months and that would cause the fuel system to gunk up again. They ended up cranking up the idle and SOLD me a can of fuel additive and told me to come back after i pushed a tank of fuel with the additive through the system. The bike still isn't running great. I would appreciate any thoughts , opinions or advice on what is going on. Thanks.

Thanks for getting back. I guess what I need to know is how to do the electrical check on the fuel pump relay. I did perform the continuity test on my current relay at least 3 separate times and got no reading at all. I’ve since ordered a replacement and need to know how to perform an electrical test with just the rudimentary tools I now have. Thanks

Your videos really helped to rebuild the carbs (there was some green gas rot in the enrichener circuit / section) but I'm having an issue where the bike doesn't have the power / quickness to rev as she once did. She's sluggish to rev is the best way to describe it. The bike was like this even before rebuilding the carbs. The bike is completely stock. I've changed the CV rubber boots and needles from another working well bike, thinking there might be a pinhole that I couldn't see, but no difference. Tried replacing the full pump, same thing no difference. There's a new fuel filter put on in the stock location. Spark plugs look ok as there is no wetness residue. I'm really stumped as to what to look for next.

Need some clarification on the fuel pump relay test. I think I can perform the continuity test with alligator clips & my HF multimeters. Not really sure how to test to get the “click click” that you showed. I don’t have that same piece of equipment you do. All fuses good. Horn, lights, starter all work. I also checked the corresponding power source on the harness withe ignition switch on and the kill switch in the ON position. With my test light, it showed power. Hopefully, I can get the fuel pump going.😃 I also enjoy your videos because you retake the time to explain everything in great detail. Whatever mechanical aptitude I have comes from KZbin.

The clicking is the priming when you turn on the ignition, provided the bowl aren't filled with gas.

I don’t recollect, but the pump is downstream of the filter. You will loose little fuel by disconnecting it.

Does anyone else experience a lot of kerchunking on the starter motor? This is caused by engine kickback and bad design by Yamaha. My starter bolts were very twisted and so I replaced my starter and starter clutch some years back, but this issue never went away. It makes me cringe every time I start my bike, and it's the only reason I will possibly sell my bike some day. I bought my 1100 Custom new in 2002 and have probably pulled my carbs 30 times over the years, as I'm on my 4th set of pipes, Cobra 2-1 HP, pods, SS420 Cams, Dynatek ignition. Replaced the rear fender and seat for a chopped stiletto look and made custom lights. I've poured a lot of love into my bike, and it still runs like a champ and pulls strong!

Thanks so much for your videos, they’ve been a great help when rebuilding the carbs. I’m having an issue where the fuel pump is not getting power when I turn the key on but the pump works fine if I apply power directly to it. I’ve already replaced the main relay with the 30 amp fuse as it went bad and I’ve also replaced the relay that you tested at the end of the video. My manual says to test continuity of the ignition switch and the stop switch but doesn’t explain how to do so. Can you please advise how I would do so or what you think the problem is that is causing me not to get power to the fuel pump when I turn the key on and try to start the bike. Thanks so much.

Two questions: - Should the pump have continuous power when the contact is turned on? Or is it correct that the relay turns it off after a few seconds? - How hot is the fuel pump supposed to get? Mine is getting pretty hot and seems to stop functioning when it does so..

After the bowls fill there is no more priming to do and it cuts off, generally after a few seconds of clicking.

Great video man, really handy. just want to ask what you think my issue is, so I been getting issues with losing power and even cutting out at high revs and I noticed my fuel system had a lot of rust in it and including the carbs, changed my fuel filter, de rusted my tank and drained both carbs and It's been a month with no issues but now I'm sometimes getting a loud singular click noise with huge loss in power for less than a second, this mostly happens when warming up the bike. also I'm getting the same issue as before with loss of revs entirely at high revs. Do you think this is the carbs?
