I have suspicion that my fuel pump is bad. There is a very loud ticking sound upon power up that isn't like the normal ticking before and I can even hear/feel the ticking as I ride and the bike which eventually loses energy, sputters and dies just about the way you'd expect an engine to die when it runs out of fuel. The bike will run on choke at cold start up, so I think the ticking sound is the fuel pump trying desperately to give the engine the fuel its asking for. Twice now the bike has died on me about a mile from home. The second time I tried to start it up right after it died and nothing. I started walking it home and thought to give starting it another try after turning it off and walking about a half a mile with it. Again the same loud ticking and It started right back up quickly but only ran well for a few seconds dying again as I pulled onto my street about a half a mile away which I'm pretty thankful for not having to walk. I know its not battery related because I bought a new one and start up is usually pretty quick. Anyone have other ideas or concur that something is wrong with the fuel pump? I'm going to test it by doing the method you've shown to empty out bad gas. I'm also going to check the filter as I've never changed it and I doubt the previous owner did due to the general lack of maintenance on other parts of the bike. Wish me luck all! And thank you retro tech, I'll come back with more once I know it.
@Thecelestial1Ай бұрын
I have finished the fuel pump replacement and it seems like everything is fine now! Removing the seats and tank was easy enough, but getting my fat hands into the harnesses was not. I ended up replacing the pump and the filter and the bike did not bog down or die to the closest gas station about a half a mile away, nor when I took the long way home about 2 miles. I'm convinced the repair was correct. If you're doing this repair make sure you don't trust the amazon sure fit! I bought one fuel pump only 'guaranteed' to fit only to realize it didn't have the same connector so that slowed me down significantly. The second fuel pump was an exact match which I wasn't expecting to find especially for only about 25 bucks! Reassembly was muuuuch faster than disassembly and replacement, like 30 minutes to an hour. I did have a problem getting the airbox back onto the carbs. I found another tip that suggested applying wd40 or other lubricants to help get it on. Doing that and rocking the airbox front and back finally did the trick! If you think your fuel pump is bad I'd say give it a go. This is the best and most thorough guide video I found for virtually all my vstar 650 needs so watch this guy a few times before trying anything else. Good luck and peace!

The fuel line coming from the filter goes into a brass fitting that is used I guess to reduce the size of the hose. The hose from the other side of this fitting is missing and gas is pouring out. My 2002 650 cut out on my way to work. I replaced the plugs, the gas filter, (which was filled with black corrosion). It still sputters and wants to quit if I give it more throttle. It only has 4500 miles on it and had the Carb rebuilt a few months ago. I felt something give as I was going 70 mph and I can`t help but think the gas tank is rusted inside and clogged my Carb. I put a temp glass filter to watch my gas flow and sure enough, more black flakes came into the filter. Now I think I need a new tank and Carb to get it right.

If the filters held up, the carbs should be fine. Clean out the tanks and determine that that stuff is, if it is part of the tanks, have the tanks lined or replaced.

@@retrotechandelectronics i was told there is a spec so you can assure its pumping the correct ammount or it may lean out at high speeds which is whst mine does. So if you check the flow for 5 secs and multiply it you get a certain fl/oz per min reading and can more accurately diagnose the pumps condition. My bike starts and runs fine but at about 45 its boggs out and almist dies...ive replaced coils, plugs, and main pick up as diagnosed in your other videos... still have what seems to be pump issue as carbs have brand new rebuild and perform well...

@@jordanestrin505 consider the amount of fuel consumption if this pump was doing little more that topping off the bowls at 45mph. If it’s not flowing it’s broke. If it’s flowing, you have other issues. If you are looking at cc’s per minute, no bike consumes that quantity

Super video and presented about the best that I've seen - made the process easy to replicate and get the bike running again. One question - is there some sort of filter just on the inside of the carb opposite of where the fuel line connects? The bike runs at idle with a funnel and hose direct to the carbs but bogs down when giving it gas. Then when I hooked the funnel up to the fuel pump it pumped gas through to the end of the hose at the carbs. But when hooked to the carbs, the fuel doesn't flow from the funnel - making me believe that the entry to the carbs is blocked or maybe---the float needles are stuck? Any ideas?
