Vehicle breakdown, telephone antenna breakdown, and jacket zipper jam all in the same evening. Checking the fit of the new track lighting tracks I got to make sure they will work with the vintage track lights I got.

Sometimes the universe doesn't give you the best luck in terms of the freakshows occurring. I'm not having the best day today either. I have a 18" SP-18 pedestal fan by SMC and the oscillation gearbox broke. And then I bumped into that same fan later today and it tipped over, breaking the front guard badge and now it is in halves. At least I had a spare gearbox lying around, but still...

The reason the expansion tank is still full is because, during normal operation, the coolant expands as it heats, and the pressure is regulated by the radiator cap (usually 16psi). Excess coolant is let off into the expansion tank. Then, when the engine cools down, and the coolant contracts, a vacuum is drawn which pulls coolant back into the “sealed” part of the system. As this system lost pressure, this operation could not happen. When you refill the system, there will be air trapped inside. The normal procedure for this is to fill the system, leave the radiator cap off, and then start the engine. The water pump will suck the level down and you can top it off at that point. There will still be some air trapped behind the thermostat, however most thermostats have a small “bypass” valve to allow the air to bleed. Otherwise, it is common practice to leave the radiator cap off until the engine comes up to temp, and the thermostat opens. At that point the coolant level will decrease somewhat dramatically. This can be somewhat dangerous (just scalding risk, there is no pressure if the cap is not installed, never take the cap back off if you put it on hot) and will create a coolant mess as it will expand and overflow before the thermostat actually opens. Usually, you can skip this step, and just expect to have to refill the expansion tank a bit as the air is slowly displaced from the system. Over the course of a few days/weeks. The radiator cap is the highest point of the system, so eventually all of the air will find its way there. Two ways to tell if there is still air in the system, first if you can hear a “fluid” noise from the heater core as you rev the engine. That is air traveling through. Additionally, with the engine up to temp, the radiator hose should be very firm. If it is squishy, the system is not pressurized, which indicates either air or leaks. I have seen many 3.6 Chrysler products with failed thermostats, and they usually do fail to open enough to provide adequate cooling. Most other thermostats fail as you described, stuck open. Not sure why they’re like this but that is my experience with these. From your symptoms it sounds like yours is fine, but that could be expected sometime down the road.

Thanks for the information. It's been a while since I've done this type of work so unfortunately much of the knowledge is starting to go stale.

We all have them days where things just don't go as expected. Hopefully that hose is all the car needs.

That is insane! And today/this week has been a true and absolute freakshow for me as well! I can’t imagine walking home unprepared when it’s windy and cold like you said. How did that antenna initially break? Good that the jacket was easily fixed, but yes, you’re right. Everything is breaking today. That car failure really is odd, but at least it was easily fixed (our neighbors are really turning out helpful for one of our issues this week, as well). At least something went right for you today. How long has that track lighting project even been going for? Now for my tale of woe. Our water pipe for the sprinklers broke again after it was repaired from a break on Tuesday, so the house’s water is out again. I had to have a surprise blood draw due to a mess-up at a pharmacy. And I have the second worst seasonal allergies that I’ve ever had. Not to mention a lot of other stuff, between Monday and today, but those are the “highlights” of today (Thursday). I am very, very much looking forward to being done with this week, and especially today.

I think your engine overheated at that first traffic light and boiled some of the coolant and at the next light the engine overheated again and boiled all the coolant which is probably why the gauge began to climb above normal.

The hose clamp looks like it is up higher on the hose. Maybe someone worked on it and never put the hose clamp back on in the correct place? Looks like you should be able to put the hose back on, slide the hose clamp down in to it's correct position and all will be good.
@JordanU4 күн бұрын
That ended up being exactly what happened.

@@JordanU Crazy stuff. At least you knew how to handle it by not driving it longer then necessary. Some people do not. You probably saved the engine by not letting it overheat.

It looks like the hose clip is still there, just half way up the hose and not where it is supposed to be... You know anyone who would want to sabotage your car?
@JordanU4 күн бұрын
That did end up being the issue.

biggest scam IMO is calling it "stainless" when it should really be called "stain-less" because they can still stain if neglected, which a car would.
@jacobiceps94525 күн бұрын
Stainless typically doesn’t mean it can’t be stained. Stainless is one of the purest alloys. It cannot rust.

Correct; the terminology is not meant to be a cosmetic description.
