What a pleasure to hear this after the butcheries of Berezovsky and Buniatishvili! This is fast, but not too fast - and always musical. Bolet's much maligned late recording is slower and even better. It conjures a unique atmosphere of mystery wholly missed by pretty much everybody else. I really don't know why so many pianists still take Liszt for some sort of technical exercise that should be played as fast as possible. Poor souls. Forgive them for they don't know what they are doing.

Grew up with this recording of the Mephisto - on Everest records - recorded in Bayside, NY, 1960. Bravo - thanks for posting. Saw Bolet several times in Carnegie Hall in the late '60s / early '70s - a great master.

Brilliant, but Horowitz's extraordinary performance is slower, and far more devilish.
