I know his may sound stupid but what do the vertical lines mean on the tabs say at 0:48 when the top guitar is playing there are some vertical lines of different lengths etc?

It's how often you're supposed to repeat the chord (or part of a chord) that comes before it. In your example at 0:48 you're supposed to play 11-12-11 twice, then only the top two strings three times, then switch to 14-12, strum that three times and so on.
