This is so interesting. My party actually encountered Dagon as I took inspiration from AL module DDAL07-17 from the Tomb of Annihilation season. I just ran a two-session one-shot using Dagon as the main antagonist! It started with my two players arriving mid evening on an island town called Harloch, which is just off the Sword Coast. Upon arriving, they're met with guards establishing the rules of this fair village and that they need to register with the registrar's office. The players do that, and then meet up with the captain as well as the rest of the crew in the nearby tavern. After many an hour drinking, everyone retires to the inn above the tavern and get some much needed rest in much comfier beds than what the ship offered. That night, the players awaken, not because of a noise or disturbance, but because the beds were just that much comfier than the hammocks they slept on. They peek out the window to gauge the time of the night based on the moon's position, but notice something peculiar. Their ship they sailed in on is mysteriously gone, and at a finer glance, they notice multiple figures swimming in a zig-zag formation towards the island. They leave their room and go to investigate. None of the citizens are outside, it is night after all; however, there are guards doing their night shifts. The players go to inquire about their missing ship; however, the guards establish that there's been a murder tonight and that the players are the ones they're looking for. An obvious lie, and quite deceptive, they're rounded up. As they're being lead to some building in the center of town, two unknown assailants attack the guards and reveal themselves as halflings in service of the great Zenafier Spellbinder who runs "Zenifier's Observatory". He says that he saw the player's come in on the ship and that later that night, his crew and captain were carried off. He then establishes that he's trying to uncover a secret of this town and that them working together could be mutually beneficial. He establishes that he'll do some research on their crew's whereabouts, but to come back after some time. He then states that the party will need better gear before continuing, it could become nasty based on what he finds... So the party departs, does some minor side quests for gold around the town, buy some gear, and then returns the following night. They return to find that Zenifier's Observatory has been turned upside down. There were signs of magical scorch marks on the wall, bookcases knocked over, and papers all about. One paper stood out although, some one of the players investigates it. It's simply a crudely drawn picture of a church with monsters inside... so the players, with no other leads, use their map to navigate to the "Temple of Umberlee" within town. The players arrive at the temple and decide to peak through the window, they witness some form of "primordial" chanting. After a few minutes, all the figures inside depart, walking in a mindless movement in unison. They walk behind the church and the players follow, but after arriving in the back, they notice those figures aren't there anymore. There are three graves close by to a tall mossy rock that overlooks the sea. After a quick investigation check, they notice a rusty iron gated door behind some of the moss and foliage on the rock. They unlock it, and the iron gate swings open slowly revealing a dark dank staircase leading down into the unknown. The players, of course, descend down the stairs. As they're making their way down, they hear voices and footsteps behind them. More of those figures are coming, so they press on. They finally reach the bottom revealing what looks to be a sunken crypt of some sort. There is a layer of water on the ground, four wet stone columns, and moss as well as various other foliage growing in patches throughout. The figures are now revealed to not be citizens, but to be fish-like humanoids, Kua-toa. The kua-toa are sitting on benches facing a ceremony altar. On the alter is the crew's captain, captain Vanessa Vanik. She appears to be laughing manically, just laughing to tears. She's got all her clothes on, but her stomach is revealed and has gaping open. Her rib cage is broken apart and exposed. As she's laughing, her head which was facing upwards looking at the ceiling, diverts over to the players and she makes out a low howl and points at them. A robed figure appears from the shadow and walks into the light of the alter, it's face is still hidden in shadow. It announces that they've made it just in time. After some dialog, the male character in the party is like, "oh hell no", and attacks the kua-toa. It's two of them vs six kua-toa, and they're quickly outmatched. As the players are about to white out from their wounds, the kua-toa stop attacking. They turn and just face the wall and the players hear them say something in primordial, which translates to "he's here". A low "thoom" sound is heard in the far distance, then amount later again. The kua-toa again chant their primordial dialog. Finally, the low sound becomes louder, as if something is approaching. Everything falls silent, aside from the sound of faint waves crashing against the rocks from outside the underground crypt. Suddenly, the roof of the crypt is ripped away revealing a huge 80 foot tall silhouetted figure juxtaposed to the moonlit nightsky. All that's seen are a pair of yellow eyes that appear to be gazing towards the players who're bleeding out on the ground of the crypt. The players are forced to make a DC20 wisdom save, at level 2, and fail. This is what I wrote as they failed their wisdom save. Their minds begins to white out. As you’re about to succumb to your injuries, you notice a physical change happening to your arms. Your skin begins to tighten, as if the very blood running through your veins is begin to evaporate from your pores. It’s excruciating. You let out a scream of pain and anguish, yet can’t hear your own voice. You have no ears. The normal color spectrum your mortal eyes begins to change, everything is yellow in monotone. You see a vibrant silhouette in front of you, it’s red with an orange glow. It’s another koa-toa, it’s heat signature. You look at your arms, and they’re covered in scales. Your mind whites out, you’ve succumbed to Dagon, and are one of his thralls.

Is there already a video that cover's the 12 Obiryths that meet every don't ask me years under the command of the Queen of Chaos? I'd like to know who these Obiryth's are and if they're still inclined to get the shard of pure evil (and thus infecting the astral... sea, causing a multiversal cataclysmic event). Are they even able to, since the blood sea became a blood rift? And what does Oxob-Ob want to do? You also mentioned that the shard has it's own intentions, I am looking forward to use this as a plot device in my outer planes campaign. Anyways, great video, keep up the great work 👍🏼

Obox-Ob wants to overthrow Demogorgon and reclaim his position as Prince of Demons, and if possible get the shard of pure evil and use it to reshape the universe to his liking. His goals haven't really changed, he's just in a much weaker position than he was when he started out. The Queen of Chaos is no longer a big deal. She's just another Obyrith Lord now as her evil plans were foiled. She hasn't really been seen in millenia. The surviving Obyrith Lords are Obox-Ob, Dagon, Queen of Chaos, Pale Night and Pazuzu, with the rest either being really minor or dead (or both).

I sometimes struggle to really know what the difference is between the Obyrith Demon Lords, whom I guess are still Fiends, and actual nightmare monsters of the Far Realm, which are Aberrations. Considering how alien, weird, and Lovecraftian the Obyriths are, I sometimes wonder why they weren't just Aberrations with a foothold in the Abyss, abs their separate universe wad just the Far Realm, considering how maddening they are simply to behold?

The whole idea of layers being infinite but also reaching other layers if you go up or down enough doesn't make any sense. It's not just in this case, e.g. shard of pure evil digging down into the ground. I guess they can be infinite in all other directions but one. But it looks like a layer is simply a region, not a pocket dimension, since you can pass in and out of a layer normally on foot, without a portal or spell. Just by walking (or swimming) far enough.
