Azgorath is a physical manifestation of the much greater being who is IO or AO. He is not dead, only a physical form split into before a new one recreated as the old had taken on life of its own. This is how he can not only be the one who started the tear fall but also be "dead" at the same time. He wasn't.

The lore conflict between Io's death and the tearfall is because it's general D&D lore conflicting with Forgotten realms lore. Whenever there's an inconsistency it's because the Forgotten realms lore doesn't line up with general D&D lore.
@MagmaLair135 жыл бұрын
Gabriel Russell Io didn’t die, Asgorath did. People use the two terms as though they mean the same thing, when they actually don’t. Io is depicted more as a metaphysical being whereas Asgorath is who is referenced as being the physical god figure. I do believe they reference the battle with Erek-Hus as being fought by Asgorath, and not Io. There is still conflict with that clarification of course but I thought it was interesting to point out. Also not to mention the conflicts in beliefs as to Bahamuts origin and the existence of Nul.

*On the Death of Asgorath and Subsequent Events:* I think the issue here is that people are trying to apply the mortal perspective of death to the divine. Gods in D&D don't die. They can be dismantled, subsumed, or even destroyed to some degree, but they don't *die* in the same sense as mortals. Even when defeated wholly and outright, if a deity's essence is not immediately contained (and in some cases even if it is) then there will be dormant shards of its being floating around in the Astral Sea which can reasonably coalesce back into the deity with sufficient time and support. With that in mind, it is entirely possible for Asgorath to be cleaved in half- effectively killed- yet remain involved in future events. In my opinion however, it is far more likely that Asgorath never _actually_ died in the first place. It has been speculated (both within universe and without) that Zehir somehow weakened Asgorath before his conflict with Erek-Hus as part of a bid to steal the Draconic portfolio. If this is true, then it is wholly possible that what is commonly considered a sundering was actually a sloughing- with the draconic god relinquishing portions of his own portfolio in order to generate beings capable of combating Erek-Hus without fear of Zehir's treachery. If the theory arguing that Asgorath was not simply synonymous with Io, but rather an aspect of the vaster deity is correct, then it is also possible that it was the portions of Io's portfolio represented by Asgorath that were used for this process, which would explain how the misconception that it was the death of the dragon god might arise. In any case, the big takeaway here is that it is perfectly reasonable for Io to remain an entity even into modern day Faerun. *Platinum Dragons* Technically speaking, both Lendys, Dragon God of Justice, and Tamara, Dragon Goddess of Mercy, are Platinum Dragons as well- though Lendys lacks wings if I recall correctly. Their exact relationship with Bahamut is unclear- with some considering, them aspects of the Platinum Dragon, others viewing them as his children, and yet others still claiming that Bahamut is their offspring. In any case, they are both certainly Platinum Dragons. Bahamut simply gets greater recognition due to his more balanced nature and unusual (for a draconic deity) investment in the affairs of the various non-draconic sentient races.

@@paperbullet1945 Yes, but I find it difficult to make a dynamic story without other good characters. Wizards of the Coast slacks on good guys in their other series, Magic: the Gathering, too. It starts off good but I'm on chapter 5 now and I think I might have to rewrite some of it... I think I'll steal this one dudes idea and have the party fight the bad guys (was thinking of throwing in some Githyanki since they have a deal with Tiamat) while on the backs of a couple dragons. Also, in the dragon hatchery, I put a silver dragon egg in with the black ones as if the black dragon hatchlings would have eaten it. My party saved it, and it just hatched last night on the road to Elturel!

I'm still trying to rationalize the whole timeline discrepancy with IO getting cut in half and Asgorath(IO) chucking the moon at Abeir-Toril later. Best I can come up with is maybe IO and Asgorath are actually not the same or perhaps were different aspects of one another. Or/Also, since it is speculated whether Bahamut and Tiamat were either two halves of IO, or they were simply the children of IO (or Asgorath), I wonder if the answer lies somewhere in a more complicated family tree that involves Null, Tamara, and Lendys. ... or... (sorry I know I'm rambling) maybe the sundering displaced time or something funky haha. In the end it's probably just one of those things that is left up to the DM to rationalize. This is awesome. In my own lore for my campaign (which is based off of the Sunless Citadel module), I had a slightly different interpretation of Bahamut. In my lore, he's almost like an Abrahamic god in his fury. He's still lawful good, but he has little tolerance for imperfection. Ashardalon (a kingdom dedicated to the worship of Bahamut, not a dragon) was an extremely advanced civilization that could be seen as we see the Roman Empire now. They were extremely powerful, but their hegemony was largely unchallenged and their civilization gradually turned to depravity on their lofty thrones. The dragonpriests gradually became less powerful in the Ashardalon government, and the rich and powerful Ashardalonian elites held an iron tight grip on the empire. After generations of this, Bahamut lost hope for Ashardalon and it's people. He slaughtered every single man, woman and child of that once great empire, including the dragonpriests. To him, it was all wicked, and the only way to right the wrongs of Ashardalon was to erase it, all of it, off the face of this world.

So, I found this D&D book "Races of the Dragon" that tells a different story about the Dragonborn. Like that Bahamut created them, or I guess forged them from individuals of the other races that sought his favor and power against Tiamat. But, what really interested me was they told a different tale about Bahamut and Tiamat's origin. Io was attempting to create the perfect dragon in all aspects (or something like that) which lead to the creation of simple-minded Vorel, Bahamut, and Tiamat. Though not being exactly what he wanted, he hoped Bahamut and Tiamat would learn from each other and create the perfect dragons he was striving for, but that didn't work out either. They just ended up rivals for his favor, which ended with Tiamat killing Vorel and trying to frame Bahamut. The deception failed, and Io banished her. Driven by spite of this she went off to create evil creatures and Dragonkind, and Bahamut went off to oppose her creating good Dragonkind to stand in her way. So is this story retconned? from a different multiverse, or what? To be honest, I kind of like this idea of Io trying to create a dragon kind that perfectly embodies all that is Dragon and Bahamut and Tiamat being by products of that, which inspired my own lore.

Two notes on this. The Cult of Dragons in Toril/Faerun/Sword Coast is a cult of dragon necromancers, not Tiamat worshippers. That is The Cult of the Dragon Queen. Second, in the events of Tyranny of Dragons, Tiamat is not summoned, but one of her avatars. She can not leave the Nine Hells. Of course, DMs can do what they will.

Io exists outside of time, they are all encompassing, things such as linear time is something for mortals. that is how they can cause something even though they died before that time.

I have an idea: Asgorath dislodged the cosmic body that would eventually create the Sea of Fallen Stars during the battle, but it took a while to reach Toril

I usually have Io/Asgorath having set events into motion for Tearfall to happen as their dying act to make myths consistent. Now that I'm thinking of it, they are a dragon God of Creation, why not have their final breath weapon fired into the sky to create the ice moon that created the Sea of Fallen Stars?

the conflict with the tearful could be do to how the gods fuck with space and time so freely and that is also one of the reasons why the aboleths hate the gods so much

Once again, the video-poster is mixing up his 4e Nentir Vale lore with the actual canon from the Forgotten Realms. I'm not that familiar with religion lore from the Forgotten Realms, but Io traditionally exists as the Greater God of Dragons in the Great Wheel cosmology, with Bahamut and Tiamat simply being the most prominent and famous of the myriad draconic deities that Io spawned. The basic idea of Bahamut as god of good dragons and Tiamat as god of evil dragons, as well as being siblings who absolutely hate each other, remains accurate, but the stuff about the Dawn War is not canon to the Forgotten Realms.

I generally prefer Tiamat's and Bahamut's non-Toril personas. Treating them as such significant deities in Toril move them out of how I prefer working with them. I also prefer to think Tiamat more or less gravitated to the first plane of Hell, and the other devils, although they don't particularly like her, do not choose to drive her out and in many ways enjoy how she heralds the entrance to the Hells, discouraging would be invaders. She doesn't strike me as a being that would make a contract with any devil - she does as she pleases but also has no ambitions to push deeper into Hell, since her real ambitions lie with any machinations she has for the Prime Material, and when it pleases her, ridding herself of Bahamut. Nor do I think she is trapped there, since first edition states she can travel astrally. As a denizen of Hell, she tolerates some of the rules of devilkind unless it in any way tries her patience, of which she has very little. She certainly wouldn't tolerate anyone thinking they can say where she belongs, or in which natural place she is meant to dwell. I also don't like to think that her heads bicker amongst themselves - such a concept already undermines Demogorgon a bit. I prefer to think of Tiamat as just an intense evil force of nature, while Bahamut understands the importance and role of humanity. He's the Optimus Prime of dragons. Discovering these two really got me engaged with the game.

There are actually two other platinum dragons. Lendys and Tamara, this is 2ed ed lore, but it is still probably canonical.
@kira68200Ай бұрын
the lore about the dragons and even more specificaly the dragon gods is such a messy labyrinth, Tiamat and Bahamut are supposed to be "bother and sister" born from the dead body od Io/Asgorath but at the same time it is said that Chronepsis/Null is born from the death of the dead body of Io at the same time Bahamut the platinum dragon has to parents, Tamara and Lendys who are also platinum dragon and in some obscur really old lore Tiamat is supposed to have a dead sister, the goddess of the other chromatic dragons the only time Tiamat and Bahamut have worked together was to kill Erek-Hus the primordial that killed Io, but at the same time it is also said that they work together only once while creating together the first dragon, Sardior, which is now the dead (I think) god of the gem dragons ... and also the son of Bahamut an Tiamat ... I guess ... so somewhat ex lovers I guess ? but also how can they have created the first dragon if Io created the dragons during the Nightfall ? and how can Io become a god if its follower were born after his death ? honestly I just think they can't find a lore about the genesis of dragons/dragon gods that they like

As a jordan myself I don't think I've ever faced such a substantial theoretical wall within the first 10 seconds of a lore introduction video. I immediately said my name out loud which I really don't do very often and was forced to admit that by all means that remain predetermined within modern western vernacular.. the ph is there.. Its not but it is.. Dahm this witchcraft..

Maybe Asgorath threw the moon from a great distance away and then teleported to Toril and had their fight with the King of Terror before the moon got there
@carloss34995 жыл бұрын
No there are other platinum dragons like Tamara
@galahadrokuviii95464 жыл бұрын
Well I hate to spoil this, Asgorath was the Primordial Dragon who fought against the Primordial Golem of Terror. After their Father was slain by the Primordial Golem of Terror. The twin dragons, King Bahamut and Queen Tiamat fought against the Primordial Golem of Terror. Thus the Primordial Golem's decent from the Heavens into the earthen ash. The [Kingdom of Azerath] was split into two worlds: [Solaris Sanduna Avelice] and [Lazule Lapiz Azure] which is today known as the [Western Frontier] and the [Eastern Backroads]. An the Allegiance was formed called the Kingdom Of Agni Ash. But soon the Kingdom was thwarted by the Frozen Kingdom of Irithyll. An the Dragonic Kingdom's Allegiance fell prey to the [King Leonic Lance] of Muno Kingdom and the Irithyll Kingdom. An it all begun the War of Warcraft. Not FUCKEN KIDDING.
@galahadrokuviii95464 жыл бұрын
Also Deathwing is the actual [Thunderbolt], the Dragon Mount of Primordial Zeus. Deathwing is a dragon breed of Pheonix and Dragons. They (like Deathwing) are known as the Creators of Land. They are born to die and create large masses of landmass for the primordial. An thus this is the real reasons Dragons fought against the Primordial Giants. Dragon's Expression: We where just born to eat and turn into Land for your war.....

I was just thinking 'The two dragon gods are awesome but how the hell would you use them in a game?' I think you could probably only have their followers in most cases. Actual gods aren't generally just walking around.

@@Jorphdan I suppose it's a conflict between the creators of the setting and wotc then with one wanting it to be its own separate thing and the other wanting one to just be one realm of many in their connected dnd multiverse.
