Phlogiston is just the largest portion of the Material Plane, not a plane unto itself. ;) One of the main reasons TSR forbade planar mechanics in the phlogiston was because they specifically wanted to avoid Spelljammer being an interplanar campaign setting at the time, they wanted it clear it all happens on the Material Plane. There are also quite a few space-native races beyond Lizardfolk: the dracon, the giff, the xixchil, the hadozee, etc. Races from Dark Sun are also banned by default from Spelljammer due to the inaccessibility of the sphere (and because TSR did not want standard races with 20 point ability score caps running about), although DMs are free to ignore that restriction. A lot of solid lore can be found in The Complete Spacefarer's Handbook.
@Jorphdan4 жыл бұрын
Right! I kinda just interpreted it like that. I guess a better description is Crystal Spheres are the islands in the prime material plane that is known as Phlogiston.
@AuntieHauntieGames4 жыл бұрын
@@Jorphdan That's a pretty perfect description, actually, one I've not really ever heard used before! :O
@PaulGuy4 жыл бұрын
I've always imagined it as every sphere is its own prime plane, connected through the phlogiston, as a sort of trans-dimensional medium. The spheres themselves consist of the universe the characters experience, with their own unique (but roughly similar) laws of nature. Oerth has its own universe, Krynn's is a bit smaller, Abeir-Toril another, and our own which is incomprehensibly massive. Not really a different interpretation, more just a way to flavor it, and incorporate our own universe into the game.
@AuntieHauntieGames4 жыл бұрын
@@PaulGuy You're idea is not at all incompatible with the setting as written. The original setting (and later clarifications from TSR) is pretty clear on the phlogiston being part of the Material Plane - but each crystal sphere can have its own inner and outer planes, some of which are totally different from those of other worlds, and can even have their own physics and divine/magic laws, all of that. WHat is even more interesting is that the unique planes of different crystal spheres must somehow connect, somewhere, in some way, according to Planescape. Taken together, the Spelljammer and Planescape settings paint a very gonzo and diverse picture of the multiverse. So each sphere is a self-contained reality, bobbing in the sea of the ultimate reality that is the phlogiston.
@DavidShepheard4 жыл бұрын
@@Jorphdan I think a better description would be emptying a bag of Table Tennis balls into a bathtub of water, with the Ping Pong balls being the crystal spheres, the water being the Phlogistion and Wildspace being what is inside each individual ball. :-)

My friend and I are currently running a Spelljammer homebrew within the 5e system. He does the plot while I work tirelessly attempting to convert whatever Spelljammer rules we can find online. For ships, I've been using the vehicle system that WotC has been putting out. It has been working out pretty good so far, but we've been trying to avoid ship combat because the players have no how navel combat works no matter how much I explain. Honestly wish there is a video that visually demonstrates it cause these players are visual learners and not audible. We are working off scraps of information so having somebody with a better understanding of the mechanics of spelljammers would really help! Especially when it comes to converting ships into 5e.

In my home game we have a sentient Nautiloid called Cthylla. In our setting the Nautiloids are created using Ceremorphosis on these space whale squid things capable of breaching crystal spheres. The reason their are no new Nautiloids are because the species is (as far as the Mindflayers know) extinct. We found her in a derelict Mindflayer shipyard where she was being housed for being defective (alive) and set her free and got a ride back to our planet. Fun times

Air Quality The air envelope around a body or ship can be fresh, foul, or deadly. Air can change from one quality to another over time. Fresh air is completely breathable. Under normal circumstances, the air envelope of a ship remains fresh for 120 days. If a ship carries more creatures than its normal crew complement, they exhaust the supply of fresh air more quickly. Foul air is stale and partially depleted. It is humid and smells bad. Any creature that breathes foul air becomes poisoned until it breathes fresh air again. The air aboard a ship with a normal crew complement degrades from fresh to foul on day 121, and the foul air turns deadly 120 days later. Deadly air is unbreathable. Any creature that tries to breathe deadly air begins to suffocate.

pretty sure minor and major helms don't round up for ship's rating, they just have a minimum SR of 1. a 5th level wizard in a minor helm should have an SR of 1. also, spelljamming helms don't strictly speaking consume your spell slots (unless you try to cast them, in which case the helm will draw it away no matter how far away you are if you sat on a spelljamming helm in the last 24 hours). they render them inactive. a minor distinction that usually doesn't matter too much these days, but in 2nd edition memorizing spells could take an entire day at higher levels if you spent a lot of them... so it made a pretty big difference back then :)

if it has been cut off, it can be re-attached :) of course, nobody knows where the sphere is, so it could be a millenia-long journey to find it for all we know... there may not even be a flow river that runs to it. and given it has a weird relationship to the planes, it may have a weird relationship with portals that people try to form in the sphere. or it could be like the astromundi sphere, where special rules govern how you can pass through the sphere. or something else entirely. that said, there is definitely fan work describing what the crystal sphere of Athas (they called it the Crimson Sphere I think) might be like, and yeah... it is not very friendly :)

Here's a question about level to Sr conversion. If you're using full caster okay fine, but what happens if you're using a half caster or someone who is multi-classed in a marshall class? Do you just take the half casters level in half. So just treet a level 4 Paladin as a level 2 Cleric? or maybe "level ÷ 4" for major hellms, or "level ÷ 6" for minor hellms? I will admit this does seem rather unfair in some ways. As for multiclass I would just count whatever levels of the caster classes they have only. Same rules as whatever the ruling is if they're multi-classed into half casters.
@rafibausk70712 жыл бұрын
One very simple idea I had but I might have seen it somewhere else. Is to use your highest level spell slot as your Sr rating. So a 9th level cleric would have an Sr of 5. While a 9th level Paladin would have an Sr of 3. I think the system has some positives and negatives. On the positive side no math. On the negative side, changes the Sr progression curve, makes that curve top out a 9 instead of 10, and eliminates the difference between major and minor Hellms. Because the system doesn't work with the distinction.

The nautiloid in the Baldur's Gate 3 video, has a type of spelljamming helm called a Pool Helm, instead of Series Helms. That's why it can continue to fly when all the illithids, except one, are dead and that illithid is not on a helm. Spelljamming helms use mystical energy, which doesn't just have to be spellcasting potential. Death Helms and Lifejammer convert life into motive power. Series Helms convert spell-like abilities into motive power. The Pool Helm takes it's energy from the illithid tadpoles in the pool. The exact thing that a Pool Helm is doing isn't stated, but it probably does something similar to the Series Helm and probably takes a little bit of energy from each tadpole. Taking a few tadpoles out of the pool, does not seem to affect the ability of the ship to fly.
@sharkforce81474 жыл бұрын
@@DavidShepheard more realistically, the nautiloid in the BG3 video has very little to do with 2nd edition spelljammer at all, and largely consists of people coming up with something that is loosely based on spelljammer rather than being an exact conversion from edition to edition. nautiloids don't use brain pools, don't plane shift, and don't have living tentacles in 2nd edition. to all appearances, 5th edition nautiloids are going to do all of those things, and while that isn't necessarily a bad thing, I do think it means answering questions about that nautiloid in terms of how spelljammer used to work is likely to wind up being wrong, because if they're changing that much, we don't really have a solid answer to give on anything else either. do gnomish whelks have cloaking devices? do elven ships flap their butterfly wings to stay aloft? does a goblin porcupine have glyphs of warding loaded with fireball on the tip of every spine? all of these are questions we could answer if asked about *2nd edition* spelljammer, but when it comes to 5th edition spelljammer we don't really have solid answers because it is pretty obvious that the 5th edition team do not consider themselves to be remotely bound by 2nd edition canon on the subject of spelljammer.

Fireball don't disappear in Wildspace, not exactly. Fire spells work normally but do not catch things on fire. From the Adventures In Space box set: "Magical fire (such as fireballs) will work in the vacuum of space, as it is the sudden creation of fire that requires no air.
