Max: Well I saw someone driving younger then me and I thought I want to do this also. Wilfried: Yeah Max: At first my father didn't want me to.. Wilfried: Jos, what do I hear now?? Your son also called you once while you where driving a F1 race? 1:29 Jos: Well I was driving a race and then my wife called me that Max was on the track, in tears, because he wanted to drive. I always wanted to wait until 6 years old or so, because I thought that was a good age to start but there was no other way around it, so I bought him one of those things. Wilfried: Ok ok, so the crying helped? Jos: Apperently yes. Wilfried: You where melting.. Jos: Well... I thought 6 years then they are somewhat further and they are better in understanding. But if you are 4,5 years old then you have to get the really small karts and that I didn't really fancy. Wilfried: Ah Ok Jos: But yeah I did it anyway. Wilfried: Max, the kart, how fast does it go? Max: That kart can reach 110 km/h (68 m/h) Wilfried: It is somewhat of a dangerous sport then when I hear these speeds. 2:16 Max: Yeah......(not really) Wilfried: But what are the dangers then? Max you first. Max: That you can flip over. Wilfried: Ok, that's possible. Jos: Yeah it can happen. Look if you are hitting someone at that speed from behind yeah then you can go belly up, but... you can also see it for yourself, those bumpers on the front and the sides, its pretty well protected. I always say, riding a bike to school is more dangerous then what he does. Wilfried: Yeah I can imagine that. Jos I see you are working fanatically at that kart. How many hours does it take? Jos: Well I've been around the track for 5 days the past week. Wilfried: This was in Genk huh? Jos: Yeah it was. 15 minutes from our home. But it's not only 5 days on the track. Second, I do it all by myself, except building the kart. The kart we buy in Italy but preparing, tuning the engine, trying to get more power etc, that I do all by myself. I got a beautiful workshop together with a friend of mine, Pecks Racing, we got a dyno, we do it all ourselfs. That makes it nice. Wilfried: Racing was always your hobby, but it used to be your profession to! Jos: Ofcourse, but I've always seen it as a hobby which I turned into my job. At some point that's what you do. Wilfried: How old are you now? Jos: 37 Wilfried: F1 racing now is all young guys, that's no more a thing for you? Jos: Yeah that's finished. Wilfried: Do you have any other ambitions in racing? Jos: Le Mans which I did last year, I still have contacts with people so that's coming again. Wilfried: Ok that's once a year. Are you at peace when you have to spend the rest of your life with Max and that kart? 4:15 Jos: Yes I'm at peace with that. I'm telling you honestly, when I had a race like last year and Max had a race also so I couldn't be with him, I was really fed up with it. But I had to drive myself. Wilfried: Can you explain how that works in your mind? Because one would think you always used to be a fanatic racer, wanting to expierence that speed. 4:37 Jos: Yeah but look at one point,.. I have been driving from 8 years old, so that's 29 years. But when your own child is racing, then you are more proud of what he is achieving then of what I have ever achieved myself. Anybody not deeply moved by that little boy, in his composure, his words, his gestures, the deeply troubling relation with that person sitting next to him who is his father, made of admiration, fear and validation, does not understand how this boy became the man he is now, but probably also why he won't last a lot of years in F1 by his own admission. Just watched this video again after so many years. When I first saw this report, I was disappointed that it became clear to me that Jos would never race again and that his focus was on managing his son. But now so many years later, with what Max has achieved, I'm glad he made that choice. This report is a very nice document that many people will probably enjoy to see again in the coming years. Max has made the heart beat faster among many racing fans in recent years. And hopefully will continue to do so for many years to come. But let's never forget that his father put a lot of energy, time and love into this. 💖🏎🆒🎦👌🙏👍

Gaaf én goed om te zien dat Max nog steeds het goedlachse brutale mannetje is gebleven als de kleine Max die we hier zien. En ook die charme zal hem helpen in zijn loopbaan. Waar vader Jos vroeger nog wel eens wat moeite had met de pers, zie ik Max zich soepeltjes redden met de pers. Gaaf om te zien ook dat Max zich zo ontzettend goed heeft ontwikkeld, dat hij wellicht zijn vader qua talent kan evenaren, en zoniet zelfs talentvoller is. Max lijkt alles te hebben om Neerlands eerste écht succesvolle F1 rijder te worden.
