Jose Gutierrez Solana (1886-1945) was a Spanish painter and writer known for his unique and often dark portrayals of Spanish society. Solana's work is characterized by its somber tone, bold use of color, and stark, sometimes grotesque, depictions of everyday life and traditional Spanish customs. Influenced by both Expressionism and the Spanish Baroque tradition, Solana's paintings often feature scenes of bullfights, religious processions, and the lives of poor people.
His style combines a raw emotional intensity with attention to detail which sets him apart as a distinct voice in early 20th-century Spanish art. Beyond painting, Solana was also an accomplished writer, contributing significantly to Spanish literature with his vivid descriptions of the cultural and social landscape of his time.
