@EugeValovirta230V the past 10ish years for me. I've bought and sold sooooo many heads and found myself playing Splawn Competition EL34 loaded for almost 10 years now, about 95 percent of the time. I still do play my Engl Powerball type 1 v2 and Savage 60 but there's something about the modded Marshall sound for me that works. It was bands like Death and Morbid Angel that first got me into Death Metal and before that it was the US and German thrash ( All 2203 JCM 800s). Even now with the low tuned 7 and 8 string shit my DSL and Splawn work as well as my engl and Mesa's. I will say this though, only amp I really regret getting rid of was my Framus Cobra modded for 6l6... Hard amp to dial in because of how the bass affects the mids and the mids affect the highs and it's interactive. Took a while to get used to it but honestly sounds like no other amp. Alot of high gain amps kinda sound the same. The cobra did it's own thing.

Love it, I'm a plexi maniac. I've been using a plexi for years, with the Legendary Tones Hot Mod. Rarely need to use a pedal, aside from when I play single coils or the HS3. Then I need a bit of OD from a pedal. It does need to be pushed hard to get the most out of it. I've had to wear earplugs because I found it was pushing out about 120 Db through a 2x12 cab. You can't take too many minutes of that before your ears are screaming and ringing for the next few days. I tried playing it through the full 4x12, but it's overwhelming in a small room. Playing live, I'll use the full 4x12, but can't tolerate it just noodling at home. One time my nose started bleeding when I was cranking the 4x12.

2104? Isn't that the combo version? I bought one inside a custom zebrawood head shell, that year. Then I bought a red full-size JMP reproduction from Sour Mash. Looks awesome, sounds awesome. But now I'm looking for a reproduction metal front faceplate and can't find one. The old one is a bit damaged. I'm also retolexing a 4x12 in red, to match.

Thanks! Not really a back up ’cos they’re so different. The backup for The Bad Boy since 90s have been The Little Brother which is a JCM800 2203 from 1985. Pretty much like The Bad Boy but just with EL34s. Bad Boy has 6550s.

@@attetanskanen7001 Mä en looppiin laittais kyllä mitään, kun sehän silloin vaimentaa signaalin, mikä menee päätteeseen (fx loop on etuasteen ja päätteen välissä) ja silloinhan pääteputketkista ei saa irti juuri mitään, mikä varsinkin Marsuissa, ja erityisesti Plexissä mutta myös jonkin verran JCM800:ssa, on olennainen osa soundia. Eli attenuaattori nupin ja kaiuttimen väliin, niin silloin saa nupista kaiken irti. Tai sitten hommaat vaikka UAD OXBoxin, niin voi soittaa vaikka luureilla nupista hanat auki :-).

Hard to compare ’cos hot mod doesn’t come with a master volume etc. 😎. But with both you can add more preamp gain.

Depends on the Marshall. Once you get into master volume Marshalls you're probably not hearing pi distortion unless you're absolutely cranking them

EVH has a much cleaner sound than most imagine. Early VH was very clean with a huge mid hump and very pronounced high end. The bottom is just set and forget it's just Marshall bottom end. Eddie's amp was a one trick pony which is typical of Marshall amps that sound fabulous. I get the same character but I use 3x the gain he used.

My head is always filled with riffs, melodies & rhythms and I just choose what I use on any given moment. Or then I just noodle stuff without thinking about anything and sometimes good stuff comes and sometimes not 😎. That’s about it.

According to Neil Zlowzlowers book (he was van halen main's photograph and ed's friend). He interviewed José arredondo (eddie first amp tech) he said he met eddie in 1972. José said it took them many years but they were finally able to mod eddie's plexi to what he wanted. Now is it true or not who knows.

It was revealed eddies plexi was bone stock nothing modded. Mike soldano had it in for repair at one point. Eddi ran his 110v at 87v if i recall. But then had a 240v head he just plugged straight into usa power also. He did have modded heada but THE amp was stock. Look at the mike soldano interview about it :)

Yes. And since all old Marshalls are different / have different stock specs mine was originally modded to similar specs than Eddie’s one was; 6CA7 power tubes, fat cap, certain valued mid pot etc. But I wanted more so we did the Jose thing and now the amp sounds and playes like I want 😎👌.

Whomever the tech was who performed the mods should've been a bit more ingenious and use a couple of concentric pots in two of the existing pot locations so the original layout of the amp along with all four inputs remained unmolested. Nothing dumber than modding an amp to make it painfully obvious the amp was modified.
