One of the best male voices of all time! He was capable to sing every type of voice in one role.Only Greindl remember that.Greindl first than Sieppi,Ghiaurov,Moll etc..

His speaking voice isn't burdened by the desire to sound "bass-like", yet he was one of the premier Schwarz Bass's of his generation... impressive!

MrGratefulheart Or just maybe his age affected his voice a little bit.

"Real" basses speak normaly "over" the voice, not deep. I interviewed all important basses beginning with Tancredi Pasero in 1976.

kzbin.info/www/bejne/oGbFnHt-qbF-m68 Actually, di Stefano's speaking voice on that video is even a bit darker and deeper than Greindl's. Of course, it maybe an effect of aging.

MrGratefulheart I think most basses feel burdened by a desire to raise the pitch of the speaking voice to sound “normal”

@@aldgislradbod1851 Kurt Rydl, Franz Crass, Kurt Moll are some important exceptions to your statement.

Wonderful bass! He could sing amazingly low and high at the same time. Something not every bass is capable of.

In spite of how many evil characters he played, he seems rather nice.

+Isaiah Burkel HE also played good-guys: Sarastro, Pogner, Sachs, Gurnemanz, Heinrich der Vogler, Landgrave, etc.

did Greindl sing "Kaspar" ?

I think his role in DER FREISCHUTZ was the Hermit.

"nice"? that's not the word that comes to mind : Greindl was a nazi-party member.

It'd be great that young singers get the chance / capacity / curiosity of listening to many of these interviews. So much knowledge from great artists that left an extraordinary legacy.

He was an important part of Wieland' "Bayreuther Ensemble". Great actor (I think you had to watch him). This interview is less important ("boeser wolf" is right).
