Documentary from 1994 about Josef von Sternberg. With lots of interviews with the man himself (archive footage, of course), Maria Riva, Nicholas von Sternberg, Peter Bogdanovich and others.

For movie stars like Marlene, it was based on a few key things: good bones, good lighting from a good cinematographer, and good make-up and hairdressing.

Tallaluah: Wonderful documentary of the great director and his great star-both of whom are ensnared in a shared tragedy, personally and artistically. If Sternberg never produced a great movie after Dietrich, neither did she (although I do think the Saga of Anatahan redeems the last part of his career). Thanks so much for posting parts 2 and 3. What a shame you cannot provide part 1.

Respectfully, I disagree. Marlene made several wonderful films after Blue Angel, though clearly they were not star vehicles for HER; she appeared as a member of an ensemble cast. But Judgment at Nuremberg, Touch of Evil and Witness for the Prosecution are three of the great films of the late 50s and early 60s.

True, true, I agree. All fine films with excellent performances. But I would suggest Destry Rides Again, Foreign Affair, and Stage Fright are equally first rate films in which Dietrich IS a principal player. My point was that the unique chemistry with regards to star, director, AND vehicle itself didn't approach the heights of say Shanghai Express, Blonde Venus, Morocco, etc. "Shared Tragedy" was probably too histrionic an expression. They both recovered from the breakup in their own ways, she no doubt more thoroughly than he.

Hardly “ jealous “ considering what type of a mother she was.The facts of the true lives of icons etc...Can be difficult for fans who put such icons on pedestals that they continue to build.MD was more than just an icon / actress / mother / singer .As a mother she left a LOT to be desired....
@correioanacabral
@correioanacabral 4 жыл бұрын
I dont agree. That is a woman with great clarity and who knows her own mind. Speaking of facts does not make you jealous. What is more, Maria was abused by a woman and her mother knew about it and chose to ignore it. I would certainly feel some kind of way about that crap.

every sentence she says about her mother is full off hate. Look at that degrading book she wrote about her. Very nice, in the first chapter writing about how the appartement she lived in during her final years smelled off alcohol and urine. Now, that's class for you. Why the hell did she circle around her the rest off her life, and after her death? Let me guess - money? She could have left at 18, told her she was awfull and never made an effort to see her again. She didn't. Well, that says enough.
@tallulahhula01
@tallulahhula01 5 жыл бұрын
I think their relationship was too complex as to say, she should have left at 18. Of course that seems "easy" to do, but then, we must remember that you couldn't escape Marlene Dietrich that easily. Especially not when you're her daughter. True, Maria Riva and her sons lived well off her mother all their life. Marlene was just human, with a very unique personality. but she definitely wasn't perfect. Are you allowed to write about this? I guess when you dealt with it for many years you feel entitled to do so. To show the real character, personality behind the image. I personally like her book, even if it tells some not so pleasant details about Marlene and her life. You must, whatever you read, always take with a grain of salt. We weren't there.... we don't know what happened. How can we say that she is lying? We can't.
@kittyviveen9448
@kittyviveen9448 5 жыл бұрын
Even Marlene Dietrich was a mother, like every mother. You have good and bad and verything in between. But don't try to make money out of one of your parants when they weren't perfect - as Dietrich for sure wasn't. You leave, get your own life and don't kick someone who is old and miserable as she was in her last year, just to make some money. And include all those detals in it - that is abussive. Just like her mother may have been at some point in her life. No, no respect for Maria Rive on my part.
