You're not wrong, when people sing lower than they actually can they lose breath and almost cannot phonate a sound. But it's the same thing if they're singing higher than they should, they just couldn't breathe because the muscles of the vocal cords are straining preventing the air from traveling through the cords and make a sound.

Toni had the same issue that TLC had with the snakes in the music industry. This is the main reason why she had to file for bankruptcy the first time. The second time she had to cancel concerts that she planned to perform before she became ill again due to lupus disease.
