Nice image to go with the music! I've seen that picture in person and have read that the reason Labille-Guiard painted the princess with her face shadowed is because it was a posthumous portrait.

Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges (December 25, 1745 - June 10, 1799), a virtuoso violinist born in the French colony of Guadeloupe son of Georges de Bologne Saint-Georges, a wealthy married planter and an African slave woman. He became a classical composer and conductor of the leading symphony orchestra in Paris, and also could wield a mean sword.

What a major force he was in the late eighteenth century! One only wishes that more knew of this unique voice and fencer.

Sadly most mainstream audiences will not hear of this neglected composer. His music just shimmers with that eighteenth French effervescence.

One of the best late 18th century violin concertos I’ve heard! Definitely something that could rival any Mozart violin concerto

The Chevalier de Saint Georges, whom later music historians called "The Black Mozart". His compositions are indeed charming. A valuable gem yet to be more widely recognised.

There is little equivalence between Mozart and Chevalier. And that is not to discredit Chevalier at all
