Fascinating, thank you. I must re-read. Regarding Marlowe’s world view he might be characterised as a realist-nihilist. He doesn’t believe in progress/ civilisation. He admires Kurtz because he is authentically savage and he sees Europeans as being as ‘primitive’ as Africans, but they. cannot see it. So the Heart of Darkness is a journey inwards, to nothingness/ meaninglessness

Thank you, Dr. Masson. My professor did his best to get us to understand Heart of Darkness, many years ago, but we failed miserably to understand. With each successive re-reading, I've gotten a bit more, but your lecture really pulled together a lot of pieces. My wicked sense of humor compels me to note that your example of the Ubermensch climbing ahead to place pitons caused me to chuckle. The Ubermensch should not forget those pitons are there to protect him, not the underman. What a pity if the underman should "forget" that he is supposed to belay the bold leader as he sails past him in a rapid descent. Edit: Typo. Can't stand typos.

"a morbid fairy tale." ❤ Really enjoying your lesson. Thank you for posting. btw when I read about the 2 ladies knitting I immediately thought of Kafka who a few times staged a couple of gate keepers, warning the narrator that they were about to give up control to tyrannical Fate. thanks again

Umm. Not sure Darwin posits later generations as ‘better’. That is a moral judgement. Were Dinosaurs less ‘able’ as creatures than a modern dragon-fly? No. It’s a matter of adaptability.

Is better adapted not better? You see what I just did?

Great Novel, good author. Too much to comment on. One question, Is Nietzche a product of Enlightenment or Counter Enlightenment? I think the later. Romanticism is a fraught term but old Friedrich is more romanticism than science. I could be wrong.

The latter, but they aren’t as opposed as they appear.
