Aaaah, Papa, I'm home. Haydn's music stirs my soul like no other composers. I love Handel, Mozart, Chopin, Bach, Tchaikovsky and numerous pieces by other composers too, however, I always come back to Haydn above anyone, his music is so addictive, so exhilarating, powerful, elegant, original, creative and will always be my one true haven of bliss!. Papa, to me, is without doubt the greatest of the greats!.

You’re right in all you say about Haydn - he is a unique and in many ways seminal composer, but perhaps we need to be careful with the ‘Papa’ bit; the term was being used as one of ridicule and gentle contempt by Beethoven’s circle of friends, and I’m not sure it adds much to a proper understanding of the composer or his music, in fact it does the opposite as it conjures up images of a harmless, avuncular, and rather anodyne composer in comparison to his near contemporaries Mozart and Beethoven. Additionally of course Papa is a complete misnomer for a composer who retained a youthful fire in his music right up until his retirement in his early 70’s in the first years of the 19th century. I’m also not sure Haydn himself would have approved of the casual use of this term; particularly after the award of his honorary doctorate in music from the University of Oxford whilst in England in 1791, he was acutely aware of his international status, and many today find it quite patronising and demeaning.

@@elaineblackhurst1509 Tempest in a teapot, to coin a phrase. Great music is what it is, thanks.

@@bigcedock It is, but some may object if a performance of Beethoven’s 5th was disrespected by everyone endlessly and irrelevantly referring to the composer as ‘Boosey’ Beethoven because of his drink issue, or ‘Trampy’ Beethoven because of his pretty squalid and untidy living quarters and the state of his personal hygiene. We don’t need ‘Papa’ or any other mindlessly inane nicknames attached to any artists of this stature.

This is wonderful! I have NEVER found a piece from the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra that is lacking. That orchestra is perhaps the best in the world!

You should also hear their performance of this same symphony under Sir Colin Davis - their playing is equally as superb there, and the tempo for the first movement is just PERFECT. It's just the right fit for that atmosphere that brims with energy and vitality; it's without question one of the best performances of this piece out there.

This music of Hadyn is quite glorious and a masterpiece of symphonic art.
Like said John Field,« quite glorious and a masterpiece of symphonic art » foi escrita esta sinfonia em 1794 tendo sido estreada em Londres no ano seguinte.

Though not as famous as some other Haydn London symphonies because it doesn't have a nickname, as good or better than any of them.

Not bad, but does not have the depth, poignancy, greatness and beauty of Scherchen's. Nor the good-naturedness and humour of Jochum.
