Dale était un merveilleux soliste ! L’orchestre de chambre Franz Liszt qui l’accompagne reste un de mes ensembles favoris en Europe ❤ Merci à son chef Janos Rolla !

I wrote a nasty comment which I have now deleted: "IT'S SO SLOW!" and now that I begin listening to it I see that it really is a beautiful recording, just as Clevenger was a beautiful horn player

i am in 8th grade and i play french horn this seems so hard but i want to try just because. The french horn is such a beautiful instrument when you can play because if you cant you sound like chewbacca.

You keep at it, you’ll get there if you believe in yourself and PRACTICE! My son was in your grade thinking the same. But he now is a graduate student at IU studying under Dale. And you can be too. Dedicate, practice, believe. Dreams don’t come true; goals and plans do!

Those trills. HOW DOES HE DO IT!?!?

you press down one or more of the valves extremely fast and it will create that sound effect. This is common for trumpets to do in many songs

@@bittersweetxxtears4832 Actually, what he is doing is called a lip trill, where you hold down a valve and move back and forth between the two partials using your air. If he was doing it with the valves, especially on the horn and that high in the register, he will most likely miss because the partials are not as far apart on a horn as they are on a trumpet.

Most of the trills in this performance are *lip* *trills* . As MaskedGamer suggests, the normal tessitura in horn writing occurs relatively high in the overtone series of the instrument, in which the frequencies of adjacent notes are close, and which become incredibly close in the higher ranges. This facilitates the player rapidly moving his/her embouchure back and forth between the two notes. Below a certain frequency, the tones are too far apart for a lip trill. While the relative "closeness" of adjacent tones in the middle and higher range of the horn makes it possible for the player to lip trill, it also makes it easy for the player to inadvertently "slip" into a wrong note, which makes lip trilling difficult for all but the best players. Further, I can aver from experience that the player must have a strong embouchure to enable this rapid "fluttering" between two notes. This can only come from years of consistent practice and from maintaining embouchure fitness, (practicing hours every day) just as an athlete must maintain fitness to perform well. Valve trills are possible only between certain notes - between an "open" note and one that requires only one valve key to be depressed. On an F horn, trills between, say, middle staff B Flat and A Flat would be virtually impossible because it would require the player to rapidly key between a fingering of 1 and 2+3. Maybe Dennis Brain could have made this sound OK, but even Clevenger would have found it challenging.

What a humbling performance! What was the make Mr. Clevenger used mostly during his tenure with the CSO?
