The "Family Portrait" you showed (14:01) is in the library at Swarthmore College near Philadelphia. It depicts three generations of the Clothier family.

At a time when 'art' was going through so many variations, often filled with artists whose quality suffered in line with the desire to be avante-garde, to survive and hopefully sell their work, DeCamp stuck with his principles to become one of America's best oil painters of contemporary realism. If you compare the subtle transitions of light and dark in his brushwork, his paintings still stand out as some of the best of the period and a real influence on the revival or representational work today. While the video shows a hint of his ability to render forms caught in chiaroscuro light, and difficult backlighting with soft, subtle edges, its only in the original paintings that you can really see the design nuances he set out to attain. As a young painter, I remember studying his work and thinking that his color and shading were some of the best in the US museums. And there is very little cracking of his oils even today, which suggests an approach of direct, solid painting and knowledge of handling the medium without fighting edges or color to achieve his often delicate transitions and clean strokes that suggest masterful work. Really a treat to watch the video and be reminded that the Boston school, and others, were once united in their approach to classic, high quality work that the public, even today, still enjoys.
