75 years ago, in November 1942, one of the greatest singers of the 20th Century died as a homeless emigrant in a Swiss Internation Camp. Joseph Schmidt, the "little man with the great voice" was literally hunted to death by the Nazi regime.
Between 1929 and 1933 he participated in more than 30 productions of the then still young Berlin Radio. After 1933 most of the recordings with Jewish artists were eliminated from the archives. That's why only a handful of these recordings are known to exist today.
In 2015 one of these "lost recordings" was found in a private collection. And here is the story of this truly sensational and spectacular find. Joseph Schmidt sings Chapelou's Aria from Adam's "Le Postillon du Lonjumeau". Recorded in the Broadcasting Studio at Berlin Radio, "Haus des Rundfunks", Masurenallee on 7th January 1932 during a life performance of the complete opera.
Berlin Radio Chorus and Berlin Radio Orchestra, Conductor: Paul Breisach

Amazing recording! How lucky are we that this recording still exists, of one of the greatest tenors of all time. Absolutely beautiful singing! The Nazis destroyed some of the greatest treasure troves of this man's contribution to singing and music.

Schmidt died of acute heart failure due to his dwarfism and he didn't die in any Nazi camp but in the bed of a private home. Never let the facts interfere with your prejudices.

@@carl5011 Your statement is NOT accurate. Even if a person is 4' 10'' in height, he is not considered a dwarf based on height alone. Schmidt did not have short limbs and a short torso, or a dwarf shaped head, or other characteristics of Dwarfism. But nice try. Schmidt died in a Swiss Camp, because as a Jew, he could not get a legal passport out of Germany in 1942,so he was caught and interned in France as an illegal. Since France already lost to Germany, they sent Schmidt to the Swiss Camp, where he contacted TB which led to his fatal heart attack. N o the Nazis did not kill Schmidt directly, but they poor living conditions that contributed to his death.

@@carl5011 Absolutely not true! Schmidt was short but was not a dwarf. He was hunted by the Nazis and whilst they didn't directly kill him, they certainly contributed to his downfall and sad death.

I'm not sure of that, his mom lived yes there but in Eastern Europe, he went back to Germany on advice from his uncle manager Leo Engel, who told him all is well here, sad because it wasn't.
