Honestly, I have never seen Joseph Schooling as the type to take drugs, cause I feel like he KNOWS drugs (considering how long he’s been an athlete) are bad and I think he is quite careful in his decision (I THINK). So when I found out about this I was like, “what made him do it?” And then he posted his story saying he succumbed to a moment of weakness. And like an athlete like him knows very well that drugs are bad so the fact he succumbed showed that he must have been in a dark and low place and mental state. I mean he was going through such a tough time after Tokyo Olympics; all the fat-shaming, not performing ‘well’ in the Olympics, losing his dad, etc. he had to bear the weight of not performing up to SG’S expectations of him, and also losing his dad, who was a very important figure in his life. Not condoning drug use, but Joseph Schooling deserves better. I’ve already heard people calling him a disgrace just cause he took the drug, which is not true. Joseph Schooling has brought glory to SG and has done so much for us. He made a mistake, and that’s okay. He’s a human. but what’s important is that he doesn’t do it again, and can find the right resources to get help for himself cause I’m genuinely worried for him.

do athletes not go through drug testing before every event? it's not permitted to use cannabis, although not a performance enhancing drug, it is not allowed to be tested for any drugs. So, it is kind of inevitable, but I do agree what happens overseas should stay overseas. Singaporeans do not need to be spoon-fed or monitored even in their own private spaces out of Singapore. I'm also quite disturbed how much the media outlets have milked this, knowing many people have been incarcerated for drug trafficking and the death sentence imposed on poor, disadvantaged people.
@jen51382 жыл бұрын
Death sentence imposed on the poor n disadvantaged?? R u insinuating that our laws only allow the poor to be executed? @@jen5138 I only said many people at such situations have been incarcerated, but I never insinuate they are THE ONLY ONES who get stuck in such situations. I’m not sure if empathy is in your dictionary. And ofc I know there’s a difference between consuming & trafficking, as overall drug laws are very strict regardless. Singapore basically had very little to nothing to do with his initial success, and yet everyone was in a frenzy to claim it after he got the Olympic gold medal. Smoking does not affect external parties as much as drugs consumption. With drug consumption, there are social consequences, such as a shady black market, violence to attain money to purchase drugs and lastly, being high and stripped off your self-control after consuming drugs resulting in potential violent crimes like murder/ rape. It's not always about ourselves.
@bakedtarts2 жыл бұрын
I get where the SG govt is coming from. They said Singaporeans are also barred from consuming cannabis overseas. The obvious reason is because they don't want Singaporeans to get addicted and bring the cannabis addiction back to Singapore, and try to source for cannabis via illegal methods. They have to make a firm stand. I feel that naysayers need to take a step back and analyze it critically rather than using our emotions.

Joseph Schooling shouldn't have to apologies for letting people down. He has his reason personal for taking cannabis. Cannabis is not just a ugly drug that has been portrayed. It has its therapeutic uses. Nobody is going to look after your mental health except yourself. If he thinks that he can relax but taking cannabis, then go ahead and be responsible for it. Don't make yourself out to be a hero for anybody as it will take a toll on you. People can place you on a pedestal/altar as a hero all they want and impose high hopes on you, but if that doesn't resonant with you, then don't take their hopes onto you. Just try to be sane among all the chaos create by people.
