Sir Ben Kingsley has always been perfect in any role he's done in film, and his performance as Potiphar here was just as glorious as how the character was portrayed in Dreamworks' Joseph, King of Dreams. He liked and trusted Joseph as the chief slave of the house, knew him to be both intelligent and wise in his dealing with the lesser slaves. But when his wife accuses Joseph of raping her, after all those years, he was furious at first, but gave Joseph the chance to speak for himself and quickly realised that Joseph was telling the truth. Sadly, as captain of the guard, he had to save face by punishing a slave instead of his own wife, despite her guilt. His credibility as a good judge of character would've been sorely questioned by everyone in Egypt if word got out of the truth. I'd like to believe that once Joseph was eventually released, he and Potiphar were fully reconciled, Joseph being a forgiving man towards his master for all the previous kindness shown to him, before the incident with his wife. It shows that Joseph always was a man of great integrity and a good heart who trusted in his God's goodness and mercy, and the plan that not only set him up to be the second-most powerful man in the Egyptian empire, but also the reconciliation with his brothers and family in Canaan, saving everybody altogether.

In the scene where Joseph is named vizier, there is a brief but heartfelt exchange between the two, which clearly indicates they are in more than good terms with each other.
@KeiFox Жыл бұрын
@@davidesguario9729 I did see the film in full more recently, and yes, I saw that moment of reconciliation between Joseph and Potiphar, which I do believe is what really happened between them in the Old Testament. Joseph and Potiphar did become friends again, and this Hollywood production gives an excellent semblance of that portrayal. :)

The movie changed the story. I have it on DVD. Potiphar in no way did believe Jospeh in the bible. He didn't sit and listen as he told his life story as the movie has it. (Not in this clip) lot of it is great but they twisted it.
@Tzvantzik7 жыл бұрын
Telling his life story as justification is an artistic framing they used to be able to tell earlier stories from the Bible (and incidentally one I think worked really well!) But even with that aside, just reading the Biblical text, it is unusual that if Potiphar believed his wife that Potiphar would throw Joseph in prison instead of executing him. There is certainly at least a reasonable interpretation of the Biblical text (indeed, one made by many Biblical commentators) that Potiphar had at least some doubt as to Joseph's guilt (anywhere from reasonable doubt to the certainty portrayed by the movie) that explain leaving Joseph alive after the severity of the accusation leveled at Joseph!

Potiphar was the chief jailer and executioner too. his jailing Yoseph was about saving face (his own). His only other recourse would have been to punish his wife (vs a slave). Of course he couldn't do that. he saved Yoseph's life. there's nothing in the chumash to suggest that Potiphar did not show mercy by sparing Yoseph's life. I like the creepy Ben Kingsly Potiphar's reaction. He knows. He doesn't thrill his wife the way Yoseph might. Yoseph was very charismatic, very handsome. Put Ben next to the Yoseph actor. What woman would choose Ben?
@fadlya.rahman41135 жыл бұрын
@@JoshuaFinancialPL In Quran, Pothipar saw that Joseph cloth was torn at the back side, which prove his innocence. But to save face, he sent Joseph to jail. To ease his concience, Pothipar bid the warden to give Joseph better treatment than other prisoners. The jail is a blessing in disguise for Joseph. Had he never go to jail, he will never met the Pharaoh cup bearer, which lead the path to his rise as a Egypt's grand vizier.

Surah 12. Joseph 22. When Joseph attained His full manhood, We gave him power and knowledge: thus do We reward those who do right. 23. But she in whose house he was, sought to seduce him from his (true) self: she fastened the doors, and said: "Now come, thou (dear one)!" He said: "(Allah) forbid! truly (thy husband) is my lord! he made my sojourn agreeable! truly to no good come those who do wrong!" 24. And (with passion) did she desire him, and he would have desired her, but that he saw the evidence of his Lord: thus (did We order) that We might turn away from him (all) evil and shameful deeds: for he was one of Our servants, sincere and purified. 25. So they both raced each other to the door, and she tore his shirt from the back: they both found her lord near the door. She said: "What is the (fitting) punishment for one who formed an evil design against thy wife, but prison or a grievous chastisement?" 26. He said: "It was she that sought to seduce me - from my (true) self." And one of her household saw (this) and bore witness, (thus):- "If it be that his shirt is rent from the front, then is her tale true, and he is a liar! 27. "But if it be that his shirt is torn from the back, then is she the liar, and he is telling the truth!" 28. So when he saw his shirt,- that it was torn at the back,- (her husband) said: "Behold! It is a snare of you women! truly, mighty is your snare! 29. "O Joseph, pass this over! (O wife), ask forgiveness for thy sin, for truly thou hast been at fault!" 30. Ladies said in the City: "The wife of the (great) 'Aziz is seeking to seduce her slave from his (true) self: Truly hath he inspired her with violent love: we see she is evidently going astray." 31. When she heard of their malicious talk, she sent for them and prepared a banquet for them: she gave each of them a knife: and she said (to Joseph), "Come out before them." When they saw him, they did extol him, and (in their amazement) cut their hands: they said, "(Allah) preserve us! no mortal is this! this is none other than a noble angel!" 32. She said: "There before you is the man about whom ye did blame me! I did seek to seduce him from his (true) self but he did firmly save himself guiltless!....and now, if he doth not my bidding, he shall certainly be cast into prison, and (what is more) be of the company of the vilest!" 33. He said: "O my Lord! the prison is more to my liking than that to which they invite me: Unless Thou turn away their snare from me, I should (in my youthful folly) feel inclined towards them and join the ranks of the ignorant."

@@KDawg92801 Indeed. Just like in Joseph, King of Dreams, he was given a chance to explain himself and Potiphar realised that he was telling the truth, but had to imprison him to save his reputation, albeit with a heavy heart, one which I believe that in both media portrayals, here and King of Dreams, Joseph and Potiphar fully reconcile later when Joseph is released and then becomes governor, treating Potiphar with the same kindness he was given when as a slave. :)
