My philosophy, if you're gonna use someone else's camp, at least use it as the person has set it up. Leave it how you found it. I can understand if someone is in a survival situation, but that's no excuse for rudeness.

Agree if I stumble across a camp that I use I was taught leave it in better condition than you find it. Don’t disturb what they have already set up. I would probably just leave a small cache of fire wood tinder and kindling in a safe place so it remains dry

While out on your trips with Scout, have you ever encountered other wildlife, especially threatening wildlife? How does he react and what do you do to control that situation? I have a siberian husky, and am very interested in spending time outdoors and camping with her, but am concerned that all of her training will go out the window when she sees a deer, rabbit, or even a predator. I know the easy answer is to have a really well trained dog, but I am more interested in your personal experiences regarding your trips with Scout. Thanks man, great videos, love the ones with Scout, especially "Winter Camping in a Canvas Tent with a Dog and a Woodstove."

Hey! I'm from North Carolina. Love the vids. Here is my question: What is the best way to learn how to identify plants and trees when you are starting out bushcrafting? (as I am new to bushcraft)
@zachburke89067 жыл бұрын
tree identification books, carry one with you. If you don't want to do that grab a leaf from a tree you don't know, when you get home(or internet) look up that tree. North American tree identification book: www.amazon.com/Trees-North-America-Identification-Revised/dp/1582380929 US tree identification website: www.arborday.org/trees/whattree/ I have used neither of these. I have no idea about the quality of the information or the ease of finding the information. The book has decent reviews, the website seems very easy to use.

Hey Joe, a friend of mine brought me to your channel. We already did some great hiking trips through the Alps but never went for the bushcraft, low equip, great equip, nature-like, steak bacon fire and a lovely dog thing you do. Not that we miss out on bacon, steak, the willpower to bushcraft the hack out of the forests or a lovely dog (even mine, a german shepard and whatsoever, not to far from Scout, is no more, we have a lot of animal shelter dogs which i work with) it´s not so easy to find a suitable place in our area. We decided to go for a little longer drive ( not too far but also not too sure if we will find a good place) and see how it works. We both have DD Tarps, used them a couple of times in our area, learned how to use a firesteel, split down wood and stuff like that, the knots you showed and in general we like nature and know how to use our hands. If everything goes well im looking forward to sending you a picture with a Scout Sticker decorated water bottle and a nice fire in the background. As you asked for a question (in no way was the giveaway my reason to write this comment) here it is. As someone who is going to try stuff like you do for the first time, what advice, apart from what we could learn from your videos, and what is basic camping knowledge, could you give to two relatively young (25) Germans who are looking forward to hear from you? If that is to general here are some things i would like to know: how many meters of paracord do you usually carry with you and at which length (for a normal tarp setup + other use)? Do you have a favorite amount of gear to work with ( there is a different perfect amount of gear for different kind of trips but which is your favorite)? Do you have any kind of music or musician that gets you into the bushcraft mood or you prefer to listen to while driving to your adventures? Greetings from Germany :)

Ronnie Flynn Mora is one of the best bushcraft knives out there and they are 15$-20$ USD. You can get military surplus ALICE packs that are amazing for bushcraft. I have been using mine for years and it still looks new. Boots and clothes are the real essentials, buy wool or manmade materials avoid cotton, everything else will last you a long time until you can get better by just taking care of it. IMO, learn skills before worrying about toys, the better your skill set is the less stuff you need to buy.

from my personal experience, get a mora knife, dirt cheap and seriously well regarded, also a decent brand new tarp if you wish to do so the dd 3x3 is awesome and isnt too expensive, i have been out in heavy rain and cheap rain protection is a killer depending on where you live. You can get just about everything you will need from military surplus at a fraction of the cost of the same quality of other gear at high prices. An example of this would be a british army goretex bivvi, it costs roughly $30- 40 and is made of exactly the same material and build quality as bivvis around the $150-200 mark

Lol it would be so funny if it is one of Joe's friends and yes your right. That could have been tape put there to mark the spot in camera view if there is one. If there is one. It would have to be in the very far distance not to be noticed. Therefore you would need Joe to be on higher ground. The tape might have been put on higher ground to get him in view. Just in case they thought Joe didn't put it on camera all of what he found. They would have it to add to their channel later. Now that would be funny as all hell. If not then just a person that tried to be respectful as he could. But it didn't pan out that way with not putting it back as he found it.

@chipmunklukeskywalker69147 жыл бұрын
Hey why are you so mad a Mark he kinda helped you kept the wood dry, you got cordage, and free fire wood. He might of tied the wood to the trees so they would stay and you could use them for fire wood, but maybe the tape was to MARK some thing under the snow XD. ALSO I thought it was very nice of him to leave his phone number, he might of thought you would call to see if it was okay. Also if I was camping ON PUBLIC PROPERTY I would use some ones else camp (I think it would be like when you find an awesome place to stay for the night but better). But I love your vids keep up the good work. PS mark sounds like a cool dude. ALSO I'm going to say you used all of the wood from to box just to make him mad and make it harder for him. I pretty sure you used all the wood.
@wulf676 жыл бұрын
Don't be so naive. The guy might have left his "phone number" (which could have been a burner number which you can get on many apps) in the hope that Joe actually called it from his cell phone, in which case the creeper would then have HIS number and could use it to pinpoint his exact location at any time, which a technologically savvy person could do through various means. Don't discount people's instincts. They could be much more tuned-in to what's really going on than you think.

Annnnnddd I'd never go back there again. Are people so naive to think that the visitor had only good and perhaps not ill intentions? Joe is out there on his own talking to no-one but his camera... Which by the way has noone in it. We're watching him not live, but a lot later. He is on his own. Joe may be a public figure but that doesn't mean he has to make friends with every and anyone. Normal people have boundaries and wouldn't do what the fan did. It's freaky. Joe, don't be telling us your location. Nor where you live, which btw you have and it would not be hard to find your home. There are strange people out there.

I’m sorry u are afraid of everything u must live life take risks I camp alone in dangerous places n I’m ok too and us Americans out in the bush usually carry rather large guns to make up for cock size so I know most of us are safe thanks mom . @passthebreadsauce7 жыл бұрын
People practice LNT all over Canada--Joe included. But these are woods he has permission to be on, and he has built a camp he can come back to whenever he pleases (I have a very similar land on a local farmers land, whose permission I have). It's just easier. You don't have to build a shelter every time you go out, and sometimes going out is only for a few hours at a time. Sometimes it is over night.

You're obviously an inspiration to that guy or gal, maybe consider being a leader/mentor and not so petty. Just my two cents

I think it's alarming how many people in the comments say they would be upset if they experienced another person using their shelters while they was away, even though it's on public ground... I know this is an old video and you are probably over the heat from this, but if you happen to read this I'd just like to say that I hope you've become and stayed a little more humble. I saw some of your very first videos and I could imagine if you were this Mark person, this would be totally unnecessary. You made it seemed like shit on your lawn. He was a fellow adventurer and didn't deserve the sass I know you're better than that. Little disheartening to see you act this way but again this is the only video I've seen you act this way. Why are you so pissed about someone else using your campsite? I mean.. if I'm just out hiking and I find one, why not use it? I mean.. those woods are not your property, are they? So it's pretty much open to anyone. He even left you a note so you don't rage about stuff being changed there, and you still did xD (The tape on the tree was bs though, I'm with you on that one)

He barely reacted. I feel like his reaction to the tape was what I’d expect if he found a soda can on a trail. It’s just poor etiquette in the wilderness. I’d say the nay sayers are more sensitive to his reactions than he was to the visitors changes. Plus his LotR reference redeems him of any possible wrong doing. Past, present, and future.

Yes Joe you seem pretty pissed. No its your land. Yes make the camper should have made his own camp. But I don't think he was mischief I truly though he was helping you by making the table and rearranging the camp fire to suet his needs. Let face it he did leave you notes. By leaving you his phone I think he wants to be friends with you. Again its my opinion. You didn't want anyone to camp there maybe put up a sign saying stay away. Me I wouldn't mine if someone camps we're I set up. I been in Boy Scouts for years and we always tough the boys to leave the woods just the way you found it.
