Setting a trap and then not checking it every day would be ridiculous and irresponsible. Invasive pests like rats also love to travel through those pipes. So that's actually a second benefit of setting the traps. Checking the traps twice a day would just become a part of my regular animal care routine. Also, it is an irrigation ditch, not a drainage ditch. So the water runs on a very specific schedule. The water has to be turned on and off, it doesn't just run on its own. The traps would obviously be removed when the water is on.

On your fences you want a baffle what we call/term a return at top so you have fence then at top you have another piece that comes back at say 45degrees made of something they can't get a purchase on similar to prison/secure places they can't get up onto it as it's coming back towards them unlike if was on other side where they'd if got on top get over it. But this way if they climb up fence they'd have to jump backwards/outwards to get to top edge more or less impossible to do so only way they could is could jump from the ground

@Germy Yeah, I've got several videos where I do that with a colony trap. The reason I don't do that all the time is you never know where the muskrat is going to pop out of. They are just as likely to come out of a hole you are expecting, as they are some exit that you didn't even know existed. Muskrats often use an emergency exit, not just the main obvious one. It's annoying to carry around all that extra stuff, only to have it not even work....

Honey badgers fur looks like what we call a fever coat in cats. Basically the mother becomes ill or stressed when pregnant resulting in a spiked temperature and the babies ending up with a silver shading. They always grow out of the silver color. It might explain why you only got 1 from the litter as well.

Boon is so cool, Mr. Carter I really respect what you do, I live in the Adirondacks and there's tons of minks, red sable and pine martins which are huge and nasty, my dad used to let people trap on our land at school lake but I asked my dad not let them trap on our property, I've run into the minks up here only one point as friendly I guess because I always left him food, he was curious with me but I kept my distance, there beautiful animals, cheers to you and what you do, I think the minks love you fo it, alo I love your dogs there just amazing doggies, thanks for the look see Mr. Carter, once again your scene there is amazing !!!

Pay no mind to the people playing the "hindsight is 20/20" game. It's highly probable if not a guarantee that they have zero experience keeping a wild predator healthy, happy and content as you say it's a balance not many understand. Minks are part of the weasel and badger family so they are excellent escape artists and can flatten and contort their bodies in ways many mammals cannot, not to mention their digging and climbing skills. Keep up the good work! I just subscribed to your Vimeo channel and am really enjoying it :)

Man I’ve been thinking about Boon a lot lately and I’m bummed this video isn’t good news 💔 I’m so sorry. But I’m glad you discovered the problem and you can use this to inform your enclosures in the future. ANYTIME you own an animal, accidents can and do happen. Anyone who thinks this was an act of neglect or ignorance is being irrational. Great idea on having a contingency plan. You handled the loss of Boon with grace and as a learning moment.

If there are going to be set traps inside those pipes, won’t it be catching any small animals such as cats, rats, possum, etc that use those pipes as a throughway. If so, those animals will die in the traps unless they’re checked frequently.

Glad to hear you've been able to figure out what happened and can take steps to prevent another escape. It seems mink are a lot like corn snakes; agile, intelligent, and far too curious for their own good. My 17 yr old snake still checks her enclosure from time to time to see if she can find another weak spot 16 years after the last escape. It's sad that Boon still hasn't been located, but it's good to see a litter sired by Crockett. He's a strong mink in his own right and I look forward to seeing what Sherlock brings to the table. Joseph in regards to the tubs freezing, what we do with the water for the horses is to have a big tub, raised above the ground on a pallet. Inside the big tub, we've put an old fence post sawed in two and put another smaller tub in, resting on the fence posts, so there's space between the two. Then we've stuffed the space between the big and the small tub with hay. Hasn't frozen over yet with temperatures as low as -12ºC (10ºF). Not sure if it's useful to you or financially viable to buy another set of tubs, but thought I'd share. Thanks for the update!

I’m so sorry to hear that Boon escaped. It’s a hard thing to go through when a little member of the family gets out of the yard and takes off. Just watched the previous video talking about this happening. You’ve done so much to look for him, did so much searching. Ignore all those naysayers out there, I doubt they have an escape artists pet that smart living in their backyards. We could all say What-Ifs but that’s all in the past. Looking back on it like that won’t help the situation. You have to look forward. You found his possible escape and fixed it, set up some traps along the outside for any future escapees. I hope he’s doing ok out there, he’s a fighter! I have an idea that might help. Have you thought about home cameras? Having them outside in the back can help you with seeing what happens before and after an escape, see how they escape and you can fix that problem.

Fingers crossed you check one of the traps someday soon and find Boon 🤞 they're such intelligent animals and never fail to surprise, especially with their escaping capabilities. When we kept mink years ago we also had some escape due to them being able to find any weakness in an enclosure, but luckily got them back due to neighbors being familiar with our pets, hopefully due to the locals knowing you keep mink, you'll find him even sooner.🙏

Mink are so cute! Their little faces are like that of a Teddy Bear and I love it that they're so hyper! Heartbreaking about Boon. I once was sure one of my cats escaped and the feeling of grief and desperation to bring him home and keep him out of harm's way (cars, cars, cars!) was so overwhelming, I was in a daze after not sleeping for 24 hours searching and searching. I kept having visions of coming across my Boyo as roadkill and just collapsing in sorrow. After so many hours lost, the silly kitty was found inside a laundry room closet tucked away buried up to his neck with comfy linen. He never left the house but I had never been so relieved to see a kitty noggin sticking out randomly inside a closet. The feeling of relief was amazing, I just hugged him and cried so hard. The good thing about mink is they seem to be really tough and could handle outdoor survival so that's a plus. I don't know how mink are with cars and roads so I'm just hoping he stays far away from those. I have faith he will someday just turn up at your front door ready to resume life with you after all his outdoor adventures.

A note on Honey Badger's baby coat: I foster kittens, and we call those "werewolves" as a joke, but "fever coat" more seriously. If the mother was sick during the pregnancy, almost always the kittens come out with that silver tipping on their fur. It usually grows out a month or 2 after birth in kittens. That is probably also why she was the only survivor of the litter. My best guess is that Rio was subclinically ill during her pregnancy, reabsorbed the other kits and HB was born with a fever coat.
