Josh Allen can't stop playing with fire, and his interception numbers back it up. While Allen has consistently put the Buffalo Bills offense on his back, his turnover problems have started to tick back up. After a questionable outing against the Dolphins with both brilliant play, and turnover-worthy throws, the main question heading into the rest of the Bills playoff run will be whether or not Allen can protect the football. This week’s episode uses the all-22 coaches film to analyze the Buffalo Bills Quarterback Josh Allen.

I really think Daboll must be some kind of QB therapist in helping these guys stay calm and take care of the football. I don't think it's a coincidence that Josh Allen is slipping back into turnovers while ole Danny Dimes is suddenly taking great care of the football.

All-22 never lies...from TV angles live I get nervous when I see him taking that hitch like you mentioned - sometimes it's a pump fake or scramble drill, other times it's an erratic throw like the ones you've shown. Regardless, I'm signed up for the JA experience and will have to take the negatives for the overwhelmingly large number of positives lol, and will hope he can get back to taking calculated risks with the right game situations like you said. Nice video!

Josh Allen is one of the strangest QBs I've ever watched. He often appears unstoppable.... Until he stops himself, unforced, in very bizarre ways. It highlights just how unusual Mahomes is. People like to compare their games in terms of the off platform, off script throws only they can make. Josh Allen is a better and more willing runner. But he also much more mistake prone. Mahomes breaks all the rules and rarely pays for it. Allen breaks rules high school QBs wouldn't and does pay for it.

Of course his fundamentals have come a long way since 2018 but he's still got issues turning the ball over. I think part of it is that he's still a gunslinger at heart and those players throw more INTs than you'd like.

Josh Allen is uncomfortable because he became too high on his arm strength and became a gunslinger. Gunslingers get shot more often than not. There's a reason why they don't win very much. Mahomes adjusted his game from his 2018-20 gunslinger days and it earned him a second ring.

The Josh Allen hype for this year never made a bit of sense to me. I’ll concede he can be a great QB at times but it’s definitely not consistent. Last season the Bills had a great offense, great coach and the #1 defense and they couldn’t make it past the divisional round. Allen got more credit last year for losing to Mahomes and the Chiefs bad defense than Mahomes did for beating Josh and the Bills #1 defense. I can’t think of one all time QB that couldn’t at least make the SB if they had a top offense, great coach and #1 defense backing them up! It screams being overrated to me. But maybe that’s just me 🤷🏾‍♂️

This is has quite a few similarities to the issues Patrick Mahomes had last season when he was struggling. While they are obviously different players, Mahomes and Allen are similar in a lot of ways. Both are aggressive and have the huge arms needed to make a lot of throws that most QB's should never even consider trying. This season Mahomes has done a better job of knowing when to be aggressive versus just taking what the defense is giving him. I think Allen will get this cleaned up. He's a smart and coachable player like Mahomes is, so he'll adjust... The question is will that happen during the playoffs this year or after?
@t4d0W
@t4d0W Жыл бұрын
Mahomes saw the highest amount of 2 high safety looks last season and it was an adjustment all year long. It caught up with him the playoffs vs the Bengals because they were down and he only saw Hill as his way out. This season was an easier adjustment because he had no Hill to have that easy bail option and he had to leverage from his easier answer to the 2 high with Kelce to attack that defense. But also had a group of receivers that can be effective if Mahomes can get them in the right match up. Allen has had flashes this season where he has shown a 'complete' game but towards the middle of the season, he started showcasing more boneheaded plays specifically in those red zone/goal line scoring situations. And it is those mistakes that still set him and Mahomes apart.
@craigcampbell8560
@craigcampbell8560 Жыл бұрын
@@t4d0W Agreed. Mahomes trying to force the ball downfield (especially to Hill) against that deep shell wasn't what I would call good decision making either, given it usually wasn't as egregious as some of the decisions I've seen Allen make. We've seen Allen clean that up before and Mahomes has obviously cleaned that up himself. The biggest difference is Allen has regressed this year by making those bad decisions again. Mahomes has managed to find the fine line between aggression and foolishness while Allen is still trying to find that line. You're right though, those mistakes ARE what sets Mahomes and Allen apart.

Even with the interceptions, the Bills' offense was still better than their season average in terms of points and yardage. The last three QB videos you have done have been on quarterbacks I think have amazing talent. Thanks for that. Do you think that Allen is trying to be agressive because he feels he needs to carry the team and prove his worth? He seems to be looking to see how he can make the play rather than let the play develope and utilize the talent of those around him. I mean it would be nice for the Bills to utilize the run game a bit more so that Josh does not feel he has to do everything, but I get the feeling that he sees the other QBs in the AFC and thinks he has to match them throw for throw.

It looks like he doesn't trust his receivers outside of Diggs, and he's pressing and feeling like he has to be superman every game. In his defense the Bills receiver play has been really bad this year, but he's clearly not "trusting the process" as McDermott would say. I also don't think Dorsey has shown an ability to really calm Josh down and get him to settle his game. I think in general as an OC he's been very good, but a huge part of Daboll's effect on Allen was how he managed to get Josh calm and in rhythm, and only unleash the chaotic playmaking version in high leverage scenarios. Dorsey seems to just let Josh do his thing and ride that line between magic and chaos a little too much.

This season, JA17 is still the leader of the team and all that, but it's been the defense more than the offense that's stepping up and winning these games. And defense does win championships. So here's hoping if Josh doesn't rein in his turnovers, that at least our D holds steady. Even though they're built to pin their ears back and attack and our offense sputtering doesn't help them do that

I mean, I’d hope our defense took some of the burden and load when our HC is a defensive minded coach, our DC has decades of experience and was an awesome player himself on a historically good defense (85 bears) and literally every 1st round pick from 2017 to last draft (besides Josh Allen) have been defensive players. Allen is literally the only player on our offense that is a former 1st round pick.

I mean you are right about defense winning in the playoffs. Bengals understand it as it was their DC and their persistence on defense that got them past the Raiders, Titans and ultimately the Chiefs to get to the SB against a strong defense with the Rams. This year the Bengals DC carry the same consistency on defense so far and being great with 2nd half adjustments. Bills fans may claim they got pro bowlers on their defense but there aren't bonafide game breakers and Leslie Frazier isn't amazing at adjustments. That D-line is great to survive the regular season because they play well enough off rotation. But none of those guys stepped up against the backups that the Bengals O-line put out (except Ted Karras). BIlls defense suffer the same fate as the Ravens on offense: great enough in the regular season but not enough juice in the playoffs.

@@t4d0W As a Bills fan, I’m fed up. This team needs a complete change in the coaching staff. I love McDermott, but he’s taken them as far as he can. We get out coached every time we play a legit team in the playoffs. We need an offensive minded HC, who is proven. Beane needs to let McDermott go, and hire Sean Payton. We don’t have time for an OC to learn on the job. Allen needs a true mentor who has done it before on the highest level. Payton can get the most out of Allen and truly teach him the game. The defense needs a DC that coaches an aggressive, hard hitting relentless style of defense.

Its not like ALlen is running anything super new from the playbook. At worse he just plays backyard bombs with Stefon Diggs if he finds him open. At this point this is all Allen just cleaning up the small things and being consistent with it. Because that small thing is a difference executing 4-5 more plays within that red zone distance to get a score to Allen threatening to a window that doesn't exist and turning the ball over. And against some opponents and playoff defense (see Bengals), you don't want to do that AT ALL.

I think the video is good conceptually, and overall, but there is so much more nuance than just saying "this is a flood/levels/sail/ concept..." or "this is a RZ Cov 4 beater..." & "he's just being too aggressive," that I wouldn't blame anyone for assuming that doesn't follow the Bills on a micro level. For instance, he has a new OC for the first time in his career, and though there is familiarity and much of the offense in terms of nomenclature remained the same, about 2/3 through the year they did mention that they scrapped a lot of newer concepts and went back to things they've had more success with in the past - so there has been adjusting that some of the other top QBs haven't dealt with, namely Burrow & Mahomes. Moreover, the loss off Cole Beasley & Emmanuel Sanders, in terms of nuanced route runners, especially vs zone in underneath routes, has resulted in Allen having to rely heavily on gadget guy turned full time slot WR in Isaiah McKenzie, who just fundamentally lacks reliable hands & the ability read zone Def on the fly and is far more of a man beater on speed routes; as well as Kahlil Shakir, a rookie with loads of potential, but struggled so far to pick up the choice/read/option routes that are a heavy part of the Bills offense. This was especially an issue after week 4 when Beasley's replacement, veteran Jamison Crowder, was lost for the season. Elevating Gabriel Davis into the full time WR2, and going from 35-45% of snaps his first 2 years, to 85% for the first time in his career, also created a lot of dependability on inexperience. Overall, and Josh would never say it publicly, he's lost a lot of trust in some of the receiving talent throughout the course of the year. They have led the NFL in drops and drop % pretty much from start to finish of the season, and are at the bottom of the league (maybe even dead last now, haven't checked in a few weeks) in avg yds of separation created vs both zone and man. They wanted to get the backs more involved offensively this year in the passing game, especially with the addition of James Cook & Nyheim Hines, but they've often let him down in terms of drops and not being in the correct spot (see near pick vs Detroit on checkdown to James Cook as an example). You mentioned the OL, but this cannot be mentioned enough. They've faced the Pats x2, Jets x2, and blitz happy ultra aggressive Mia x3, along with a fully healthy LAR, Tenn, Bal, Pit, KC, GB, Cle, and even Minn, who's DLine is great. Great DLs, along with Rodger Saffold and Spencer Brown being weekly sieves, and injuries at varying times to all of them, and Allen has been pressured at a ridiculous 36% on the season. Which leads to the last point, the UCL injury that he's quietly battled since week 8, when this "turnover prone" narrative began. Having to relearn how to throw effectively on the fly shouldn't be undersold. All of this, and still threw just 2 more picks than Burrow, Mahomes, and Rodgers, and 1 fewer than last season. In fact, Allen has a reputation for throwing a bunch of INTs, especially early in his career - he threw 31 in his 1st 3 seasons over 44 games, while Joe Burrow has thrown 31 in his 1st 3 seasons over 43 games. The last 2 years he's thrown 29, Burrow 26, and Mahomes 25. If 3-4 more ints means you're a more reckless passer over the course of 34 games, then ok, I guess. But hes also thrown far more TDs on deep to intermediate passes (10-19 yds & 20+) than anyone else - 29 for Allen, compared to 17 for Burrow, and 13 for Mahomes. They are the 2nd overall offense in DVOA, pts/gm, yds/game, EPA, and EPA/play, and over this stretch of 4 games when this narrative has exploded, they've scored 34, 35, 35, & 32 pts. And have scored 28+ pts in 7 of the last 9 games. So I get that it's for some reason seemingly all the national media is talking about this week...but man, if that's "bad" I can't even imagine what good looks like.

In fact he was rarely ever mentioned before, he grew with Mahomes and they complement eachother, neither Allen or Mahomes started in the nearly perfect team like Brady did after bledsoe got hurt, the team he started with was monsterous and got even better, always hated that the rest of Brady's team never got as much credit as they deserved, just all went to Brady like he was a one man team, so frustratiating to me, an average QB would shine in the position Brady was put in, but don't misunderstand, im not saying Brady is average, just that he get a bit more credit than he deserved in his early years especially and the rest of his team mostly got slept on. @@J42274 No, a QB is taught to protect the ball in that situation, or throw it away, he still had option other than a weak grip and fumbling, all kinds of QB's get sacked all the time but don't fumble like that. Watching this video I'm wondering about something that can't be seen on film. Aside from Stefon Diggs Buffalo has a rather ordinary group of skill guys. Obviously Diggs is great but I'd put him on the tier below guys like Hill, Kupp, Chase and Jefferson. Gave Davis was expected to rise to the level of a true second receiver or even a 1B. That hasn't happened in my opinion. Dawson Knox is a good TE but he's more of an exploit what the defense can't cover type player than someone defensive coordinators need to scheme for specifically. They drafted James Cook because Singletary is solid but lacks the kind of juice to be a consistent producer of explosive plays. Cook hasn't seen a ton of playing time because he's a liability in protection. Simply put there is nobody outside of Diggs who defenses need to be specifically aware of when game planning. Throw in a very mediocre offensive line and you have a recipe for hero ball stew. Like I said this isn't something that can be accounted for on film. I just wonder if Allen feels the need to take more risks because of the lack of top tier weapons. Also now that I'm thinking about it, the defense without Von Miller and with a sub- optimal Tre White is no great shakes either. I feel like if you take away Josh Allen this roster is barely playoff caliber.

Looking at INT's alone is very deceiving, punting the ball is a failed drive same as INT's and fumbles are and the Bills have the LEAST amount of failed drives in the NFL for the past 3 years 💪🦬💪 #BillsMafia

I'm not shocked at all why the Bills are never successful. Overlooking interceptions is cool, until it's against the wrong team and you lose. The Vikings pick on 2nd and 10 in OT lost you the game. His fumble at the goal line was a failed drive that led to the tying TD for Minnesota.

@@dankburrito8345 so a fan pointing out that a Bills team that has been the MOST successful at converting drives to points, despite whatever turnovers, for a 3 year span, has won 11-13 games 3 yrs straight, has the highest pt diff/gm for the 2nd straight year, and is one of only 2 teams to make it to the Div Rd in 3 straight yrs, and who has the highest rated post season QB in NFL history...is the reason the Bills are "never successful?" That's a weird flex bro. Mahomes threw a game ending int vs the freaking Colts this year. In fact, he threw a game ending pick vs the Bills after throwing a RZ pick on the 1st drive of the game. He's also melted down 2 straight years in the post season leading to losses. Burrow made it to the SB last year despite being mediocre in the playoffs, just as he was last week, but mediocre wasn't good enough in the SB either. You can point to a lot of things as to why Buf didn't win it all, especially last year, but turnovers, and especially Josh Allen, was not one of them.
