I resonated deeply with the part about making paintings that communicate Feeling to the viewers. I’ve been wanting to do that and am supposing that I need to feel something about my subject first.

Josh is truly an inspiration. I can relate to many of the insights he shares, and interestingly, they’re often thoughts I’ve had myself. These insights feel universal-especially for those who work from life observation. For instance, experiencing a fleeting light effect while driving or walking through a landscape and having that visceral reaction of "oh!"-that yearning to somehow capture the moment in paint. The real challenge isn’t so much having these insights, as they seem to arise naturally for most painters after sustained effort. It’s about cultivating the skills to translate those moments into paint. Josh demonstrates just how far that skill can be developed, and it’s truly remarkable. It’s also fascinating to note how low-resolution the reference is-a simple screenshot from a video. I can’t count the number of times I’ve taken RAW photos with a fairly decent camera, only to find there’s far too much unnecessary detail, and the values and colours are completely off! Working from photo references is challenging enough without being overwhelmed by an overload of information that’s misleading or just plain wrong.

Agree with the lots of work references repeated here. Also just relax enough to discover your brush strokes knowing you can fix anything. Only a mistake if you leave it. Enjoy your application and discover! It's amazing what you pick up after a large volume of work so get busy and stay that way every day. He says what if I put water here, a perfect example of how to discover through exploratory attitude. These are let God guide you moments in art and career.

Something that occurred to me listening to this podcast (and quite a few others you’ve done) is the idea of artists being “good” or getting “better.” These notions are only something an artist can talk about in representational art. It can’t be spoken of in modern or conceptual art. In fact it’s not even a consideration that is spoken about in those circles. The idea of getting better only means something if there is some objective standard to which one can refer. Interesting interview.

The magic of glazes is partly due to the differences between how light interacts with opaque and transparent surfaces. When light hits a transparent layer, it is hitting the layer below it and then shooting back through the glazed layers while opaque layers simply reflect light. The addition of a transparent glaze colors the light as it’s shooting back into the eye. It’s like putting a color filter up to a light rather than looking at a paper with that same color on it. Additionally, transparent/translucent surfaces have a more uniform structure which allows more light to pass through it and reflect back out in the same direction rather than being scattered and diffused. The more light reflected, the greater the vibrancy. I might be wrong in some parts of my explanation as I’m still learning about all this stuff. I too have a background in painting directly and I only recently discovered that it has its limitations.

I dont think thats the "magic" per se, thats just the optical effect... its how a glaze is utilized by an artist who has perfected the technique that brings about the magic. The process behind how they glaze. The ground and subsequent glazing. Glazing over textures that allow the glaze to sit in the cracks so to speak etc. Unfortunately a lot of students i've taught think if they just glaze it elevates and they overdo it and its just awful looking.
