Josh Newton Film Breakdown | Joe Goodberry Bengals On The Brain Episode 84

We turn our attention to the Cincinnati Bengals newest cornerback, Josh Newton, who was selected in Round Five of the 2024 NFL Draft out of TCU on Episode 84 of Bengals On The Brain with Joe Goodberry, presented by First Star Logistics.
Newton continues the trend that started when Zac Taylor became a head coach, as Taylor and his staff love to draft former team captains. Newton began his college career at Louisiana-Monroe before heading to TCU, where he started every game (27 games) over two seasons.
Newton, a Monroe, Louisiana native, showcased his versatility and determination in his transition from high school wide receiver to college cornerback. This shift in position came after his freshman season, during intense spring practices.
During his two seasons in the Big 12 Conference, Newton earned first-team all-conference honors in 2022 and second-team all-conference honors in 2023.

You got me hyped on Matt Lee last week man. Idk how that dude was still there In the 7th. Makes me wonder if he can play guard or if he can take over the center spot soon and slide ted to LG. I'm not one that is ready to crucify and write Volson off, he improved in the 2nd half of last year but I see Lee already doing a lot of the things Volson struggles with pretty well and looks stronger quicker and more athletic than Volson already so there's a potential option to possibly improve our weakest spot on the oline.

I don't see a boundary CB with Newton but what I do see is a guy with the majority of traits to be a potentially good future nickel CB. Mike Hilton replacement. They may let him play a little boundary for obvious immediate needs but I see an eventual slot cb.

We are t looking for a nickel CB. Newton primarily played on the outside. Newton is stricktly backup this year. CB4 or CB5. And the reason we aren’t looking for a backup nickel is because we have one already. We took him in the 1st round in 2022. Daxton Hill was a nickel CB at Michigan and he was an elite nickel CB. Probably because he has he exult has the athleticism to play outside. But Mike Hilton and Josh Newtons athleticism compared to Dax Hill’s it’s not even close. Hill wins that. I think we should release or waive Jalen Davis and sign him to the practice squad. We have our starting Nickel moving forward.

We still need a outside cb #3 that can fight for a starting job if Turner doesnt improve. I see teo weaknesses on this team that could possibly hold us back from a Superbowl. One is Corner and the other is interior offensive line. Does Volson get better or worse? What happens is center or rg get hurt?
