This and McCabe & Mrs. Miller are films that are best enjoyed on dvd because you can understand the dialogue and subtleties of the film better

Yesterday (Tuesday March 7th 2023) marked the 50th anniversary of the release of this underrated Robert Altman Neo Noir of the early 70’s which was got unfavourable reviews from critics and film goers. Subsequently it faired better where both the star and the film got better acknowledgment.

I love this movie so much. Elliott Gould at his best. Robert Altman at the top of his game. Once it starts rolling you can't take your eyes off the screen.

Chandler purists seem to have issues with this film. Well, I'm one Chandler purist who DOESN'T. I'll go so far as to say that it's the BEST Chandler adaptation of them all. I don't know how or why, BUT IT WORKS. It just works.

First time I saw this movie, I hated it. I just found the ending implausible & something of a betrayal (if you've seen the movie, you know exactly what I'm talking about. If you haven't, I won't give it away). But I've seen it several times since & it's begrudgingly grown on me. Now I love it. The plot is almost beside the point. It has such a great atmosphere to it & Elliott Gould as Marlowe gives Bogart a real run for his money as one of the coolest P.I.'s in movie history.

The Rumpled Essence of Shabby Cool ... Other than the operatically tragic Mickey Rourke, has there ever been a Tinseltown talent, who seemingly had it all, who has so frivolously pissed-away his A-List status in "Dreamland" as effectively n' efficiently as Gould? This totally fabulous but short-lived re-emergence on the calloused heels of his legendarily ill-fated, "highly" existential odyssey on "A Glimpse of Tiger" is very much his signature performance to be sure. I still have mildly obsessive, deep-seated euphoric fantasies about what might have been with that notoriously-stalled Warner Bros. production. Seemingly, Elliot was in over his head and apparently out of his "Knicks"- lovin' mind when he was red-lighted n' railroaded out of town. I think the primary reason "...'Tiger" was so viciously caged and subsequently put to sleep was the catastrophic failure of Brodsky n' Gould to hire a Director who was suited to the project; a gritty, sardonically dark New York love story to be helmed by stuffy Brit' Anthony Harvey ... really? Still, it all continues to leave you wonderin' about what could have been? The possibilities potentially posed are mind-boggling. Elliot n' Kim would have been so sweet together, at least they would have been on '70's Cinema Celluloid anyway... Altman n' Gould's Rich n' Rewarding Gumshoe Reinvention Should Be Savored Annually.

+firechiefrisley Elliott DID make one crackerjack movie after his fall from grace. 1978's THE SILENT PARTNER. Possibly the best movie to ever come out of Canada. YOU HAVEN'T LIVED until you see Christopher Plummer in drag. Screenplay by Curtis Hanson (L.A. CONFIDENTIAL).

Jack Grattan The Silent Partner is a great movie! Plummer's villain is one of the most sick, twisted fucks in cinema history! Also features a pre-stardom John Candy!

Tough to say, Gould and Altman had a very rocky relationship (Gould & Sutherland tried to get him fired from MASH) but made great films. Altman was hated by the studios and I guess Gould was sorta tarnished by his association with Altman. But you could also make a case for George Segal having the same career progression as Gould

I like this movie. For my Money, Bogart'S Philip Marlowe in the Big Sleep is the best Marlowe. however, Elliot Gould as Marlowe is quite good.

A truly great 70s movie. My one complaint is that the theme song was overbearing.

Naw - just watched it recently amid a number of noir films and I just didn't buy it, or like it. Sterling Hayden was the best part of it, and I could barely sit through the whole film. Goukd is just to dull through the whole escapade and doesn't come together until the very end.
