The NCAA basically gave college athletes more power than their coaches and pro athletes. They can sit whenever they want, transfer whenever they want, take as much money as they want, and cripple a teams ability to build up depth and experience.

Expect for very few teams... not many leaving texas.. ok.. mich..osu.. Washington..alabama... Georgia.. ok Georgia toom a hit this year... so those teams will retain people for 2 to 3 year to build a great program... especially alabama.. plenty want to go there before.. now... they will go to get paid and win national championships.. most guys will crumble or destroy their teams leaving

@@danielrn133 the problem is the school offering kids money. That I know of, nobody was advocating for schools to have groups pay players millions upon millions of dollars to attract them to their program. But everyone agreed they should be able to be compensated by other means like signing autographs, advertising deals, social media, etc. Nobody was against giving the players a bit more power and freedom but instead the NCAA gave them all the power and all the freedom with no strings attached.

Chip Kelly’s/Josh’s idea isn’t too far fetched. Schools already pay students as part-time employees all over campus. Grad students work as TAs/RAs, undergrads work in hospitality and other departments. A lot of PhD students get scholarships money and work part-time as grad assistants, so the model is there (And schools do compete against each other for grad students). Just apply it to athletes.

1. Pay the athletes (proportionately to the sport). 2. Allow one transfer per athlete, no restrictions, no waiting period. This keeps a balance of power. Coaches shouldn’t have all the power. No 2nd, 3rd transfers. 3. College administrators are intentionally delaying the inevitable. No wonder, as paying players will come straight out of University coffers.

Would the pay be based on the player's position, amount of time played, star ranking, evenly distributed across the team with no respect to position or playing time? There are a lot of ways to approach it but I have never seen a proposal at that level of detail.

Sadly, I've never actually played except with the boys in my neighborhood, but I did attend every single home game in my home town from 1969 through 2009 (we had to give up our seats in 2009 because my mother - who attended every home game from 1951 through 2009 including through four pregnancies) could no longer navigate the stairs at the stadium. Unfortunately, I'd probably be disqualified because the home town is Ann Arbor and the team is Michigan. But it's fun to think about. (I and 92yr old mom are still super fans. Would be an amazing change. Making the players "employees" with a set salary and NIL is something that themselves or their "agents" could seek would be better than a collective fund being used to persuade players to come to a school. I think if we can get the governance and forcing players to play in their bowl is something that would bring value and tradition back to bowl games that makes them feel a lot better to watch.

I think the transfer portal should be the player has to sit out a year - unless the university gives the player a release. For example, if the player is a starter- the university should not release the player unless there are circumventing instances. So if a play leaves for more NIL (i.e poached) - let them sit out a year.

@@rah5931 This is quite literally the answer. It’s a good middle ground. Kids should be able to transfer. 1 time is enough, it’s the repeated transfers that are the real problem. DJ Uiagalelei, felt like he needed to leave Clemson and that’s fine, use a transfer to Oregon St and now kicking rocks again. He now needs to sit out a year if he needs to leave. It makes these kids think about where they going the first time while still getting the ability to leave out one time if they feel the need. As far as paying all players a fixed salary, there's major problems with that, too: 1) Some players are worth much more than 50k. You must factor that in. The top QBs in the portal are asking several million right now and will likely get it. 2) Only a handful of schools are profitable as far as revenue generated. Most are in the red. How would those schools pay? 3) You forget Title IX. If you pay football players 50k, you must also pay women's lacrosse. If they now are forced to pay athletes in sports no one watches, what will happen is schools will simply begin just shutting down those non-revenue sports. (Hey, people asked for it to be pro, well this is what will happen in the real world).
@andrewzimmerman6059
@andrewzimmerman6059 5 ай бұрын
The legalese for point 3 is easy; you have to make it based on revenue share. If a university signs a TV rights deal with Fox for football, that money goes to pay the football players. The TV rights deal for soccer or basketball are separate deals, and it becomes all about which sport brings in money. The players are then compensated in accordance with the revenue they bring the school. Sure, you have scholarships that must follow Title 9, but the differences in payments to athletes in different sports is the same reason why an adjunct professor’s salary is less than a tenure track professors salary. One provides more value to the school than the other and they are compensated accordingly.

The money Josh Pate is talking about comes from companies buying ad space on the networks, so they are the people who get want they want. They are the customer who is always right, not us.

Chargers with UCLA, Seahawks with Wash, Falcons with UGA, Cowboys with Okie State, Chiefs with Mizzou, Titans with UT, Browns with Ohio St, etc. One NFL franchise could partner with 2 or 3 schools if they want. Let the NFL buy a stake into the college brands and let them help organize a new college league with sane scheduling and a fair play-off. 2024 & 2024 have the 12 team playoff set, but after that who knows? My prediction is that the Big 10 and SEC gain more schools and consolidate the top tier of D1 football. They make an alliance with one another, and agree to leave the NCAA in football. They will add Florida State, Clemson, Miami, Notre Dame and likely some combination of North Carolina, Georgia Tech, Colorado, West Virginia, and potentially TCU, Virginia, Syracuse, Boston College, Utah, and basically at this point cherry pick who they want. So that each conference has 20-30 schools. Those two conferences then form divisions with some geographical sense, and have their own playoff (more than just a championship) for the conferences. And agree to play the two champions for what will be the new method of determining the national championship. The Big 12 with probably survive, and be the highest conference in the next tier. But those two conferences will then control the top tier of college football more directly. They will set their own rules for NIL and/or direct payment to players. As they won't be confined anymore by the NCAA anyway.

@@alphadragongamingFTW calling football it's own entity doesn't exempt it from Title IX. The reason colleges spend so much on women's sports that bring in no revenue to support themselves is because Title IX says if you make an opportunity / benefit available to a male student, the same type of opportunity / benefit needs to be available to female students. If male students are getting paid by the university, it's only a matter of time before a Title IX lawsuit says a more or less equal number of female athletes need to be getting that 50k as well.

I saw Kelly's presser and for a hot minute, assumed it was AI. Obviously it wasn't and this all makes far too much sense to ever be done by level heads. Which is unfortunate because the status quo in CFB cannot be maintained for very much longer. Will there be issues to iron out as far as players transferring, how that affects their scholarship, how NIL factors in, scheduling and any number of other pitfalls? Sure, but it's not insurmountable by any means.

The integrity of the game is gone now that we are allowing players to be played huge sums. Will a young player straight out of highschool be able to handle a half of million dollars? Will he bust his butt at practice? Will the other players not receiving as much money become discontent when they think they deserve more money? Everyone for the team will just be a thing of the past. College football is becoming the New Younger Version of The NFL!

Thinking this would remove NIL from recruiting is a tad naïve imo. The players that have the potential to be worth a lot more than 50k, will still be offered big bucks to choose the teams that want to win the most. Everyone getting paid 50k wouldn't change that in any way.

There is no direction, but the solution isn't to run head first into transforming universities into franchises. The solution is congressional action followed by university presidents stepping up to the plate and establishing an across the board compensation structure that removes bidding wars and unsustainable NIL deals. Playing college sports is a privilege and should be respected as such.

I do not see how giving a rev share to every player at all changes what NIL would do to entice recruiting and transfers. I like the idea of rev sharing. But it would not change anything! If everyone was getting the same $ to play, it is the same as everyone getting nothing to play. You would still have players out there saying "ok so I get $50K to play anywhere, so now who will offer me the most to go there".

Kinda random....but does anyone remember "the lorax"? All the animals sat peacefully in their paradise, plenty to eat, barely anything was bad. Then came someone, someone who said "I can make a lot of money off this place" and proceeded to chop down and destroy everything that made that place special, and instead put out product, product that the average people absolutely loved. Product that made a lot of people a lot of money, product that gained so many consumers, that most said it was worth the sacrifice for the greater good of their lives. Then came a SMACK!! An ear splitting CHOMP!! And when the people looked up they discovered that the last tree of that beautiful Forest had been cut down, all the animals, all the scenery that made everything special in the first place.....gone. But few people cared, because the money, the product, the consumers, all had gained too much to care about what they destroyed. I'm not some "anti capitalist, environmentalist, socialist c**t" just someone who watches college football. And from what I can see, we're on our last tree. Do we let them chop it down?? For the greater good of the "consumers" (Thanks for reading my really unnecessarily long comment , hopefully you got something out of it, but if you didn't here's a cookie 🍪🍪)

He's dead right! I been saying it for years. Everyone rips ND for not being in a conference, but in reality they got it figured out a hell of alot better than most universities. Conferences are a joke to prop up lesser schools who can't financially compete and it still doesn't help.

So if a team can't "financially compete" then they don't count? Your argument is it should be entirely determined on money? Really? Conferences aren't designed to prop up "lesser" schools. How TF does that make any sense? You think Alabama is in the SEC to "prop up" other teams? They added Texas because they feel sorry for them? Christ.
