Stanford won the Director's Cup 26 of the last 30 years. This denotes the #1 college athletic program in the country. So the PAC12 dominated in terms of all athletic programs. The SEC isn't even close. No SEC team finished #1...but with the addition of Texas, who's won 3 of the last 4, that will change. There's more to athletics than baseball, football and basketball. I’ve always heard the SEC is overrated because all of the schools are just riding Alabama’s coattails (and Georgia’s). And you might have an argument if it wasn’t for that 123-94 stat vs P5 teams. Alabama and Georgia are powerhouse teams, to be sure, but the other teams can be just as difficult to beat. SEC games mean your can’t just show up & cakewalk to a win. You have to bring your A game every week.

I read an obscure article in Sports Illustrated in 1995 that shocked me. It said the SEC has quietly been the best conference, when crunching the significant numbers, in college football since 1950. And the article crunched the numbers to prove it. This was a shocker because at that time, and going back to 1971 when I first began watching college football, it was the B1G every year that was touted as the best conference, not even close. My brother and I would watch the media all year make this claim, and then the SEC would almost always outperform the B1G in bowl games, overall and head-to-head, and the announcers would admit on the last day of the season that it turns out the SEC was the best conference for that year, to everyone's surprise. Then the next season would start, and it was the B1G again, with no mention of the previous year(s)... and this happened throughout the 70s, 80s and 90s. It wasn't until the big run that garnered the SEC seven championships in a row (2007-2012) that the media narrative changed. Admittedly the SEC became MORE dominant during that timeframe. But it has been at the top of the college football world, in results if not in perception, since I was born 60 years ago.

Asa West Coast guy, I can definitively say the SEC is the best football conference and has been for a while. College football has gone through several evolutions. The first powerhouse was the Ivy League -- specifically the Big three of Princeton, Harvard and Yale. Then it became Eastern independents such as Pitt and Fordham. The Big Nine was next up, with Minnesota, Ohio State and Michigan. There was an era of parity for a bit, as West Coast teams like Southern Cal and UCLA joined the fray. In the 1980's eastern independents like Penn State and Miami rose again. And then starting with the late 1990's, the South became the seat of power in college football, starting with the three Florida schools and then teams like Tennessee and Alabama (and a couple spectacular individual seasons by Auburn and LSU.)

One thing everyone is overlooking is that in this new playoff era teams that are not conference champs will be required to play at the higher seeds‘ stadium. This opens up the possibility that SEC teams will need to play in weather that the have never had to contend with before. That changes things quite a bit. While the SEC has been the dominant conference from 2000 onward, it can be said that they rarely played true road games outside of their footprint and certainly not in conditions that they were unfamiliar with. Big Ten teams did so on the regular, in OOC play and during bowl season when most games have been exclusively in warm weather environments or controlled conditions. That is an automatic advantage for SEC teams because they are built with those conditions in mind. Not so for Big Ten teams. We will just have to wait and see if this is an equalizer that was never considered because the possibility never existed before or if the SEC is just plain better. We might find out if the path to a championship goes at some point goes through Columbus, Ann Arbor, State College, or some other cold weather place in the dead of winter.

@@joshjohnson2736True. But Big 10 teams have experience playing in hot weather during bowl season and OOC away games at the beginning of the season. The SEC has never really experienced what it’s like to play during winter conditions because they don’t play late regular season OOC away games against cold weather opponents and the bowls are always in warm weather locations. That said, SEC teams are usually just better period, but when another element is introduced into the equation it could lead to some interesting outcomes that cause people to question whether weather (pardon the pun) should be a new criteria to consider when evaluating matchups.

An example for SEC being overrated: When Michigan was assigned Alabama in the Rose bowl, they gasped as they watched FSU getting shafted. But all the SEC slobbering media, with ESPN front and center, claimed Michigan did gasp because they were AFRAID of big bad Bama, because they couldn't hang with their physical lines and SEC speed. And 'of course' Saban would outcoach Harbaugh. Boy did those lines look stupid when Michigan sacked their mobile Qb 6 times. Boy, did Bamas SEC backfield look slow when Michigan's slot receiver outran 3 defenders to the pylon. And boy did Jim show why he got a team to a NFL superbowl, and Saban didn't. Recent history is more compelling, but the problem imo is that they always love to use the championship argument and the championship arguement has considerable flaws. Namely in that post season for college football has been historically very suspicious, inconsistent, and downright corrupt. They laud 13 titles and yet if you look at those years about 80% of them have controversy in selection. Now they still won the title, which should be recognized, but whats really annoying is that the conference and their fans make zero effort to acknowledge that the selection has been atrocious garbage. As an example, the first title the SEC won in the 21st century, the literal #1 ranked team in the country magically didnt even make the national championship game. LSU played a team that got BLOWN THE FREAK OUT in the conference title championship by 28. You know so, its not like im pointing out minor technicalities here.

Alabama has single handedly put the SEC above any conference in the nation

Wrong. Take Alabama out of the equation and the rest of the SEC has more national championships in the BCS/CFP era than any other conference. Learn the facts.

@@scottturner1504 Now you're trying to change your tune. I never said that Alabama wasn't the most successful SEC program ever. They are and an argument can be made that they're the best college football program ever. In fact I'll argue that point for them. However that's a far cry from saying that Alabama has single handedly carried the SEC to the top. Nothing could be further from the truth.

@chuckwest7045 Alabama got more national championships then all other sec teams combined and we got more nfl players then all other sec teams and we wun the sec last year and would of wun the national championship if not fur Michigan cheating.

SEC has been the dominant conference since basically the invention of the BCS nearly 30 years ago. Since that time SEC has won more titles than all the other conferences combined and has had several teams win titles. Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Florida, Auburn, Tennessee. All these teams except Georgia have a BCS championship. Since BCS was created SEC has 6 teams win the title all the other conferences combined for 9 teams. And SEC is adding two of those (Texas and Oklahoma) so next year SEC will have 8 of the 15 programs (over half) that have won a title since creation of the BCS in their conference. You have to back to pre-BCS to find time when SEC wasn't dominating college football. Back to the 80s and early 90s when Big 8 Nebraska was at it's peak with Oklahoma and Colorado along with 4 legit title contending Independents because FSU, Miami and Penn State were all Independent as well Notre Dame. SEC was still good but not dominating CFB. It's a ridiculous 30 year period now where SEC has been far and away the best and deepest conference.

How do you talk about the BCS and yet fail to recognize how incredibly controversial that era was....... - You cannot say you dominated the BCS era, when teams that outrank you magically dont play in the title game. - You cannot say you dominated the BCS era when there are seasons with 2-3 times as many undefeated teams as there are spots for selection. - You cannot say you dominated the BCS era when there are multiple teams with the same record as your champion but dont make the chance playing for a title because the selection process is garbage. I mean youre talking about a post season selection system that had to change how it did its rankings 6 times because of controversy, and a system that literally got sued TWICE by the federal government for corruption. It is ridiculous to act like this era is above board without controversy.

@@MattBuild4 it was controversial, and I agree with that. I HATED the BCS. However the final season rankings are what they are. SEC has dominated for a long time.
