FSU was left out of the College Football Playoff with the CFP Committee selecting Michigan, Washington, Texas, and Alabama instead. On Thursday night Josh Pate took time on Late Kick Live Ep 462 to react further and respond to a viewer question about whether the Noles and Mike Norvell should consider opting out of the Orange Bowl game. Could unprecedented steps on the front end of this equation lead to equally unprecedented responses on the back end? Should the Seminoles have been punished for losing their star QB? Will we see something like this ever happen in the future? FSU is UNCONQUERED, it's their trademark born of the Seminole Indians' historic reputation (they were beaten, but it was done with subterfuge and blatant racism). If FSU does not play UGa, it denies the reputation it's earned through years of effort and performances by the players, coaches, fans, administrators, and others. DO NOT OPT OUT, FSU!!! If you get beat, you faced the opponent, unflinchingly. WaywardFolk says loads in that brief post.

I think a lot of the people who say that bowl games never mattered didn't experience what college football was like back in the 70s, 80's, and most of the 90s. And one of the reasons bowl games mattered is, quite simply, there were not very many of them. For example, in the mid to late 80s, there were approx. 15-18 bowl games. Back then, you would have several teams with a 7-4 or a 6-5 record (this is also when there were 11 games in the regular season) who didn't get a bowl berth. And January 1st was a day of glory when it came to the big, and most prestigious bowls. The Fiesta, Rose, Orange, and Sugar were all New Year's Day bowls. Playing on New Year's Day actually meant your favorite team had one hell of a season. Hell, before the Conference Championship games existed, it was even possible to win a share of a conference championship, and still not be invited to play in one of the major bowls. Today, there are 43 bowl games. 43!! And if there are not enough 6-6 teams to fill all the slots, a team can be 5-7 (like Minnesota this year) and still get invited to play a bowl. So, if your only exposure to the bowl games has been in the last 10-15 years, I can see why some might think bowl games do not matter.

FSU rejecting an Orange Bowl invitation would be understandable based on the perspective you provided. However, they would also be giving up their shot at beating Georgia and showing everyone the Committee got it wrong. I keep reading these comments. Fsu winning or losing against GA has nothing to do with if they deserved to be in !!!...they could've had it 1. Michigan. 2.washington 3. Fsu..4. Texas... fsu is 14 point dogs against ga..what would they be against washington?? +7.. we know Georgia's is better than Washington..so you're telling me the game wouldn't be close against washington??!?.. losing or winning against GA doesn't change anything..because GA is better than all of those teams. Fsu is only 14 point dogs.. you and I k own fsu wouldn't be 14 point dogs against washington..so why are they not in. If vegas thinks that fsu is as bad the committee thinks...Georgia should be 3 + touchdowns favs...which they are not..which means fsu..could go toe to toe with washington. Which makes this an injustice!!!! I honestly think texas shouldn't be in..and let alabama and georgia fight foe the 4th seed..but you know..if you put fsu as the 3rd deed where they rightfully belong..they.may actually beat washington and then get blown out in the championship and that's what the committee doesnt want. The mstchups were already rigged from the start..if not having your star qb was that big of a deal..the committee should've bumped them down when he got hurt. They created this mess and now they gotta live with it. All of their decisions were hypocritical and stupid if you ask me.

I used to take vacations to watch bowl games. Now, with players opting out it's no fun any more. As for FSU ... they won the swimsuit competition but lost the beauty contest and make no mistake. CFB is a beauty contest and what happens on the field is secondary. This is the fault of the AD's who instead of having a real playoff, decided they liked the polls, computers and/or committee picking teams instead of playing it out on the field. FSU didn't make it because the AD's and conference commissioners created rules they no longer think they have to live by since it worked against them. Now, FSU is outraged because the rules didn't work for them and are crying about a system they helped create. Cry me a river FSU. You created the system, you supported the system and now that it worked against you, you want to quit and take your ball and go home? Go for it but put the blame where it belongs. It's not the committees fault. It's the AD's and commissioners fault for supporting this system. Don't let them put the blame somewhere else.

I didn't blame them, as it was a financially smart and personal decision; however, it was a disappointing. Like you, I also took vacation days just to watch bowl games. I looked at the teams as LSU-lite and Stanford-lite that year. Now the practice of opting out is so common bowl season has become boring.

The bowl season used to be MAGICAL. No more. The playoffs ended all that. One of my favorite sports memories was New Years Day, 1966, when the top 3 teams in the country all lost. First, LSU ended no. 2 Arkansas's 22 game winning streak in the Cotton Bowl, 14-7. Then UCLA stunned no.1 Michigan State in the Rose Bowl, 14-12. And then Alabama capped off a very exciting day/night by finishing off no. 3 Nebraska 39-28 in the Orange Bowl. Those bowl games were all meaningful in the days before the playoffs. No longer the case sadly. Seriously, do bowl games even have a future unless they're turned into playoff games? As an LSU fan I just can't see why Jayden Daniels, Malik Nabers, or Brian Thomas should risk their futures by playing in this year's bowl.

Then FSU only had 219yds of offense vs Louisville, with Brock Glenn Without Toafili’s first play of second half going for 73yds, score would have been 9-6 FSU. And another point, in Tallahassee with Jordan Travis, FSU barely beat a very mediocre (7-5) Miami team that was starting a True Freshman QB. AND** that true freshman QB was driving for the game tying score, got a first down and suffered a compound fracture of his arm. FSU escaped a possible loss But after that game, FSU fans didn’t want to hear any excuses from Miami fans about them, having to start a True freshman quarterback, and him breaking his arm. How about FSU barely beating (6-6) Boston College 31-29? (Jordan Travis) Or FSU going to OT with a (8-4) Clemson team? (Jordan Travis) Or FSU leading 10-7 at halftime vs a (3-9) Pitt team, only finishing with 24pts. (Jordan Travis) FSU fans never can see both sides of the picture they only ever see their side .

@@scooby2181 The non-playoff bowl games are pretty much of a joke. Usually if a team is in the CFP playoffs, then the players don't opt out even if they are turning pro. However, if a player enters the transfer portal, then they probably won't play in the playoff games. Texas backup QB Maalik Murphy entered the transfer portal and is playing for Duke next year, so he opted out of the playoff games. This is not a big deal if the starting Texas QB doesn't get injured, but it could be a big problem if the starting QB cannot play. During the regular season Murphy started 2 games because the starting QB was injured. They really need to move the transfer portal dates so that does not happen. At least football is a little better than the "one and done" rule for basketball, where players are allowed to turn pro after one year if they enter college (or go straight to the pros from high school).

I won't lie, am an FSU fan. The truth of the matter is that I am crushed by this decision. Mike Norvell did such a great job coaching up these guys and building a loving, team atmosphere and these guys battled for him. Many of these players remember the shortened Covid season when the team was horrible. It went up from there and they have earned their right to celebrate college football by their hard work and results. Now, ESPN steps in and says "Hey Boo, money". Then they run off a litany of contradictions like FSU isn't pretty to watch, doesn't run up the score like ... Michigan does? Jordan Travis, a player, is the reason FSU is being sent down to the Consolation Bowl. Let's ignore the rest of the players who kept winning games without him. Let's ignore the dominant defensive team that stuffed a ranked Louisville team when they got a turnover in the red zone by holding them without points when the game was still hanging in the balance. I mean, if Michigan, Washington, Alabama or Texas were to have their guys go down to practice injuries or whatever, would the Committee remove them from the playoff and reinstate FSU? What if John Harbaugh were to have more violations thrown his way, forcing him to be off the sidelines, does Michigan get dumped out of the rankings and banned from the playoff so that FSU can move up? I can go on and on but that would be pointless. The question is whether FSU should be playing in the Orange Bowl. If you asked me this any year I have been rooting for this team prior to now, I would be proud to see them play in that game. Considering the time and effort put into this, the Orange Bowl game has always been a reward for achievements on the field, until this year and now it seems to have become a punishment. But the question here is about doing what is right, about ethics, about hurting the people who hurt FSU where it counts, in the wallets. Were I FSU's players, coaches, athletic directors, and boosters, I'd appreciate them to wait until the very last moment possible and tell everyone it is not going to attend this year. 1, This meaningless game has lost the value with players waiting for NFL paychecks avoiding risking injuries, like the one Jordan Travis had. 2, What is the value of being ranked 5th all of a sudden but still having Georgia ranked lower and both Alabama and Georgia are SEC schools with similar resumes, and the fact that Georgia was a two time defending champion. Lose to Georgia, people will use the narrative of "See, even with Georgia missing guys, you still didn't win and deserved this". Beat Georgia, what did FSU beat exactly? A ranking number? What honor is there in playing a glorified preseason scrimmage game, for next year's players, and winning it? FSU gets to beat a team with a name and a number but not the best players. Sincerely saying, FSU should hit ESPN and anyone who intends to earn from the Orange Bowl where it hurts most, the wallets. Revenge is dish of oranges best served cold.

You are welcome to stop watching games. Nobody is twisting your arm to support FSU or anyone. If, by your rant, you choose this path, I respect your decision. I believe in doing what is right, by hitting these decision makers where it hurts. They have wasted the efforts of the athletes on the field, as well as the trust of the fans who trusted in the system. They have given contradictory explanations that don't make sense. The ESPN media has let their pundits push the agenda using language meant to bully and force people to accept it without question. I can throw out a litany of rebuttals at anyone who sides with the playoff committee and ESPN's agendas and I know that the best anyone can do is toss their toys out of the crib like a toddler throwing a temper tantrum. Why did my opponent get a week off and we didn't, why did I get matched up with Liberty, why should I play when the refs are responsible for keeping me out of the playoffs, why should I play when my schedule is too hard. If FSU opts out they will be cementing their future in mediocrity because they will attract coaches and players that are ok with quitting.

If I were FSU, I would do the following. First, let the players have a meeting in private. If they as a group decide not to play, FSU pulls out. This must happen by Tuesday evening December 12. Second, even if the players decide NOT to pull out, any player who does not wish to participate in the game will not be penalized in any way -- even those that return. Third, FSU should not do this at the last minute, or refuse to play the game if they show up -- this will damage their reputation for all time, and they need to understand it.

That's a ton of "ifs". Protests are inconvenient to the powers to be, to the participants, and everyone watching. That's how they're effective. FSU decides to ruin the Orange Bowl and the networks lose money, the bowls reputation is eroded, and its effective at calling out the system's bias. Pulling out early, allowing another team in for the ratings, negates the whole point. So, the one if is this: If they protests, this will hurt the pockets of the people who influence the committee.
