I am so happy that people can let me dream by their experience in the music and that I can eat the song that they play. Josh, you understand jazz in tone and timings in a dynamic improvisation.

It is one of the marks of musical genius to make exceedingly difficult stuff look like it's being done with ease. Of course it is Genius, but only made to blossom when mixed with thousands of hours of hard and dedicated work. That plus the touching quality of personal modesty. I like to think that hundreds of years from now, on a starship millions of miles from Earth, performances like this will still by played, and loved and marveled at.

Oh wow awesome. Hey thankyou ,you do sound beautiful. So soulful. I really enjoyed it i have been looking at that horn..... Can you answer something. Please when you blow do you buzz while blowing ?or just even air flow top lip over bottom. Lip? Thankyou
@bigeyezzzzzzz9 жыл бұрын
Diana Scott There is a buzz created when air passes through the lips. If you hold your mouthpiece by itself with your left hand and buzz on your mouthpiece alone, and, as you're buzzing, you slowly slide the trumpet onto the mouthpiece, it will help you understand what happens. Hope that helps!
@dianascott16979 жыл бұрын

Diana Scott Thanks, Diane, I'm glad I was of some help. As far as comparing the 8310Z to the 8335, I have not tried it, so I don't know. Also, every horn is different for every player, so it's really best if you can try them out yourself, as you are the only one who can really know for sure. Thanks again for all of your kind words!

Sounds great man! What kinda setup horn/mouthpiece wise you playing for flugel and trumpet?
@bigeyezzzzzzz11 жыл бұрын
Hi, and thanks for your nice feedback! My flugel is a CarolBrass model number: CFL-6200-GSS (SLB). The USA distributor for CarolBrass is Doug Teeter at (559) 436-5247. I use a very old Jet Tone flugel mpc hand-made by Bill Ratzenberger. For trumpet, I'm currently playing a Harrelson Summit, and using a copy of Clark Terry's Giardinelli mpc. But horns and mouthpieces all work differenetly for every player, so I hope you find what works best for you.
@DanGeorges10 жыл бұрын
bigeyezzzzzzz Josh - this is excellent advice. Horns and mouthpieces will sound different for each individual. What works great for one person may spell ruin for another. Too many trumpeters get hung up on MPCs, and fiddle their embouchures to the ground. On the whole, though, equipment matters, but not as much as who's behind the horn - in my opinion. However, I'd love to test-play a Summit. I've heard great things about its ease of playing, tone production, and overall versatility.
@bigeyezzzzzzz10 жыл бұрын
Dan Georges Thanks! And, you've heard correctly about the Summit! It's an absolute joy to play!!

Beautiful rendition, Josh. It surprised me somewhat to learn you use a Jet Tone mp with your flugel because the sound is still so mellow and flugellike. I know the piece you have is hard to come by but is there any Jet Tone available out there right now that would come close to what your using? I'd be interested in trying one out myself. Again, magnificent playing!
@bigeyezzzzzzz8 жыл бұрын
Jon Nick Hi there, and thanks for your very kind message! Regarding the Jet Tone flugel mouthpiece, the one I use was apparently handmade by Bill Ratzenberger back in the day, and I've only ever been able to find one other one (which I keep safely stored away in case the one I'm using ever disappears). I've tried several other Jet Tone flugelhorn mouthpieces, but none of them come anywhere close to this particular one. I've also had some of the best mouthpiece makers make copies of this one, but the copies don't play anywhere close to it. I think a lot of it has to do with the mysterious lightweight material that was used to make the mouthpiece. So, unfortunately, I'm afraid I'm not sure what to suggest to you..... except, if you ever find one of these mouthpieces, hold onto it!
@golf4funjn5328 жыл бұрын
Appreciate the info, Josh, it was very interesting to get your take on that. Continued success in your music career!
@bigeyezzzzzzz8 жыл бұрын
Jon Nick Thank you, kind sir! And, by the way, I just found out that the lightweight material that was used to make my flugelhorn mouthpiece is a magnesium. alloy.

@bigeyezzzzzzz5 жыл бұрын
Hi there, again - yes, this is still my favorite flugelhorn and the finish has never worn at all. It’s really a beautifully-made and beautifully-sounding instrument. As a bit of a disclaimer, keep in mind that I am an endorsed artist with Carolbrass, but I wouldn’t play this flugelhorn if I didn’t absolutely love it. If you are not already buying the horn directly from the US distributor, Doug Teeter, you might want to give him a call and see if he can give you a better price than where you are ordering it from. His number in California is (559) 301-0858, and you are welcome to tell him that I referred you. If you get the flugelhorn, I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Hey man, I'm a senior in high school and I recently placed 1st trumpet in the band of the Alabama All-State Jazz Honor Band. Even though this is great, I am trying to step my game up to the next level, both in concert and jazz. If you don't mind, I would like to know if you could share a few things that you've studied or are currently studying. Also, I was wondering who you studied with. If this is not too much for you, please answer because like I said before I'm trying to supersede to the next level of my playing ability. I also have a two videos on my channel of my recent Christmas performance if you're interested in hearing me and if you want to hear my audition tape for all-state just let me know and I can email that to you. Thanks!
@bigeyezzzzzzz8 жыл бұрын
Hi, and thanks for writing. Glad to hear about your desire and drive to get better and better. That's something we're all trying to do all the time. You sounded terrific on your two Christmas videos! It'd be hard to answer your questions with much detail here, but to help with tone, accuracy, endurance and range, I do a lot of Carmine Caruso and Jimmy Stamp routines. And if you're trying to improve improvisation, it's important to transcribe tons of solos. I don't mean to just play written-out transcriptions. I mean to transcribe the solos yourself. Write down each note, including the chord changes, so you can see why the soloist chose the notes. If you'd like me to hear your all-state audition, here is where you can upload it: www.dropbox.com/request/vyPTe8IGr8uK6E2jKkGs All the best to you, and thanks again for writing!
@kananayah8 жыл бұрын
bigeyezzzzzzz thanks so much for the response! I will send my audition tape soon. And yea basically all my mentors tell me that jazz is 90% listening and 10% playing. It's a process but everyday I listen to Pandora on the way to school and I'm starting to notice my improv to improve so now I will start to trying to step it up a notch and transcribe some solos. I mainly listen to Dizzy, Lee Morgan, and Donald Byrd
@bigeyezzzzzzz8 жыл бұрын
Hi again...I just heard your audition recordings....you sound like you're clearly headed in the right direction! Definitely dig into transcribing, and also any sort of long tone exercises that will help bring more richness and vibrancy to your sound. Congratulations on making all-state, and here's to continued successes ahead!
