Excellent comparison Josh, thank you! I've had the Sigma for my A7SIII since it came out - it's definitely a warmer and greener-looking lens which I prefer most of the time. This comparison has convinced me I don't need the GM II. Thanks again for your efforts.

@Josh_Sattin Josh can you do me a favour. Test the active steady shot stabilisation? I have the sigma but also have the stabilisation set to on, thus having a slight crop. Does active steady shot work on the sigma and how much of a difference is it on Sony. Thanks.

A bonus for the Sigma ,is the zoom goes the right way ,for anyone used to cine zooms or ENG zooms , a shame Sony does the "wrong way" the PZ lenses you can change in the camera menu ,fx cameras anyway , but not these stills lenses , just being able to not think about the zoom direction is worth it for me .Also love their newer model DGDN Art primes , but wish they would come out with a new 24-70 with an aperture ring.

Thank you, Josh! I had the Sony 24-70 in my cart but decided to do more research since I am a new Sony user. Your review was very helpful. I will go with the Sigma and upgrade in the future if I think it is necessary.
@POVwithRC Жыл бұрын
This was actually very useful for me. My only 24-70 is the old F4 Zeiss and its always had a sharpness problem. It was an open box product so someone clearly returned it for a reason. I aim to replace it with something better. Sigma might be it.

I feel like the 24-70 is my most important lens and I too am nervous about going anything less than the 24-70 gm ii
@hsolen769 ай бұрын
Another point that wasn't mentioned. The speed of the Sigma lense has limited speed of approx 20 fps, where as the GM support the speed of Sony A9 III = 120 fps. Not relevant for most people, but if you need the top fps that Sony A9 or A1 can deliver, then the GM is the only choice. I have an older model of Sigma 24-70 (the one with dust issues), and I ended up with buying the GM, simply because I trust (personally) the build quality more from the GM, than I do with the Sigma.

Props to Sigma for keeping things competitive. The first Sigma 24-70mm was solid. NGL I kind of liked the warm cast, but I did upgrade to the GM II for autofocus and weight saving

When I had my Sony A74 this was the first lens I bought and it was always glued to the body. I was ok with its size and weight. I thought it was well balanced. Loved it - amazing quality photos for $1299 Canadian when on Sale. I shot my daughters prom with the Sigma. Wish they had this lens for Canon or Nikon.

Spinoff question.. If you have or have experienced these two lenses, what would you choose btw Sony 24-105 OSS G and the Sigma 24-70 dg dn ? thx... still on the fence about the gmii and I own the 24-105 and shoot mostly video.
@Josh_Sattin9 ай бұрын
Those are both great lenses and more of a personal choice. I haven't used the 24-105 F4 that much, but I general choose a 24-70 2.8 over a 24-105 4, but that's just what I like.

2 questions 1. How to you deal with a zoom lenses on a gimbal if they pop out when you zoom them? 2. How did the Sigma aged? I've had the 16mm from Sigma and at first it was amazing but after a two years probably my autofocus wasn't as precise as in the beggining so I have trust issues on that regard with Sigma while my Sony 35mm hasn't had a flaw in maybe 3 years or more. Thanks for the info Josh, very helpfull.

Hi there Josh, a question... Is the Dust a really issue in the Sigma? I work on the Car Scene, and I'm moving into the track side of it, so there is a lot of dust, in the air, gas from the oils and gasoline etc.. I need some thing between that range of 20-70 non Prime to work on Pits and others areas beside the track but I keep reading that sigma gets dust in the inner glass easily
@Josh_Sattin10 ай бұрын
As I mentioned, it was an issue with the early production of the Sigma, but supposedly it has been less of an issue with later copies.

If you have the older lense like mine. They take it in for free to fix it. Note. The newer and post fix lense have a stiffer zoom ring. Bit of a hindrance for me hence why I haven't decided to send mine in. Smooth Zoom is key for me.

Hey Josh, you forgot to mention one of the most important differences: linear manual focus, which is enough IMO to justify the GM. I owned and shot with Sigma DG DN lenses and non repeatable manual focus became a nightmare eventually.

@@mirrorlessmemory you don’t need an option in camera. Certain Sony lenses have a linear manual focus response (meaning repeatable manual focus pulls) despite being fly by wire.

The one thing you didn’t cover is how well the stabilization performs in video. The Sony is much much better so if you do a lot of handheld video shooting with active stabe on, the Sony will be much better. But for everything else, the Sigma is a way better value.
