If they can't afford fuel then their maintenance and repair regime will be suspect, which is one reason Conviasa is banned from the EU. I'll take a guess at their flight crews not being the best trained either.

i used to live in Venezuela and i’m a Venezuelan national (my moms side is Venezuelan) i’ve flown on Conviasa several times both on the A340s and the Embraers. those flights to Moscow, Damascus, Guangzhou and Tehran fly mostly empty. You frequently see russian tourists in caracas and the national parks but they mostly fly in on Aeroflot or Nordwind. the Conviasa flights are just for show. they are also frequently filled with gold and other minerals.

On the fuel payment issue... I think the issue is not about paying for fuel, it's that Venezuela and its airlines are not extended any credit as their currency/economy is not internationally credit worthy. As a result, they must use actual cash on the spot to pay for services/fuel. Majority of airlines have contracts and credit with vendors and fuel suppliers, so they take on fuel/catering and the company gets billed and the plane leaves the gate. Venezuela airlines are not extended that credit and must have cash on hand. Given that he said it happens often and they weren't worried, my guess is they somehow didn't have enough cash for the amount of fuel they needed for the trip, so they may have had to get money wired from another account, etc. which probably took a bit of coordination and effort from the companies involved.

@ralfbaechle

@@paulsz6194Customers almost certainly with credit cards - if that is possible at all under the current sanctions against Venezuela. Whateber, the fuel vendor will have to make sure they are paid in a way that doesn't.put them into ciolatuon of the sanctuons and in which the received payment can't be revoked by a bank or other intermediary party. That's tedious. Filling up half a tank (my very rough estimate for this route) of an A340-600 (155.5t) is over $50,000. So counting will take a while, security with such cash ttansactions is a PITA, not every agent of the fuel company may be permitted to accept the payment, the amount is large enough that money laundring laws need to be considered. I'm not surprised it took a while.
@goytabr
@goytabr 14 күн бұрын
That also probably explains the manual processing of everything. There are international IT companies that run and manage airport computer systems, and airlines pay for their use. Shell (for example) may accept cash in hard currency as payment for fuel on the spot, but that would be harder to do with SITA (for example). It's a much more virtualized and intangible service, especially when the client is from a sanctioned country.

Another similarly political flight is Istanbul-Havana-Caracas-Istanbul on Turkish Airlines. I doubt that it operates even close to half full. And the last I saw, TK operated it daIly with a 787-9. And I doubt that in this case it takes any suspicious cargo. TK is a large international airline with an important presence in major Western markets, and I don't think it would put this position at risk of sanctions doing that.

I was born in Venezuela and traveled our national airline "back in the day," Viasa. It had excellent service. My sister and I were upgraded by the flight crew to first class, for no apparent reason other than to be kind. We were kids traveling by ourselves, so maybe that is why. I think it was on a Caracas-Miami flight, but I don't truly remember. It was on one of their numerous DC-10s. Needless to say, us venezolanos were terribly disappointed when Iberia bought Viasa, which led to it's demise. So in a way, it's heartening to see this version of our old airline resurrected, even if it is a shadow of it's former self. Given the challenges this airline faces to stay afloat, it's truly miraculous that it is flying at all, let alone providing decent service. For that reason, I'd be hesitant to fly it, knowing that the airline is forbidden to purchase Airbus and Boeings airplanes as well, which means that the parts to repair and maintain it flying must be obtained through contraband. Still, as I said before, I'm sure just seeing planes with the orange and white livery similar to the old Viasa is a source of national pride for venezolanos. I look forward to the day when the socialist government is ousted and the economic situation improves in my beautiful native country, so that our flag carrier can once again fly freely and more safely. Thank you for taking the opportunity to fly Conviasa and sharing your experience with us. What did you think of Caracas? I hope you felt safe and welcomed.....

It’s so sad to see what was once a powerhouse of Latin America become a dump. This is what communism and socialism does to a country. And it’s equally tragic to see so many young Americans and Europeans fantasize and have some ideation that socialism will make their countries better. I live in Britain and nearly 50% of the young people between 18-30 want a communist or socialist government. Their lives have been too easy and insular and they have not undergone the suffering that those Venezuelans have. Maybe they will have to learn that lesson the hard way, and oh, Britain is a country surrounded by sea, at least those Venezuelans can flee to neighbouring countries by land, but good luck trying to swim to Ireland or France if you’re stuck in a communist uk

@@damcoentertainment3956 Can confirm. I flew business back when Lufthansa still had Caracas - Frankfurt flights a decade ago, unfortunately they and several airlines left the country after the Venezuelan State refused to pay the debt to them. You see, until 2019 there was a stupid "exchange control" which essentially was a subsidy to foreign currency, so airlines were supposed to collect the rapidly worthless local currency for plane tickets and the State would provide the airlines the equivalent in USD or some other foreign currency (that individuals were forbidden to have or use), and they started delaying payments until they flat out stopped. So yes, the "Socialist" regime of Maduro stole a lot of money from the airlines, way before "sanctions" were imposed to the individuals running the country.

They definitely can't get parts. In aviation you need maintenance logbooks and can only use certified parts. No second hand, no salvage stuff, no local mechanics. Once an airplane doesn't follow protocol you'll never fly these again in the global air worthiness framework. So you get stuck with countries outside the system. Iran. Russia (which is currently going through the same issue with an unmaintained, deteriorating fleet) and some failed African nations. Im surprised Mexico let's them land. Must be a political decision.

@@mysterioanonymous3206 They get parts from the "3rd" market, that means, very overpriced via middle countries. As you can imagine, this plane probably cost a fortune way above market price, and is of course a 4 engine fuel hog.

Interesting review. I'm obviously becoming out of touch as I didn't really know about this particular airport in Mexico City, and certainly didn't know there was a new Mexicana. I have only flown to CCS once, but at least it was on an Iran Air B747-SP from Damascus - certainly the most exotic ultra long haul flight I have taken! The next flight was supposed to be a Cubana IL-62M, but it was subbed for an IL-96. Thankfully I got the IL-62 the next day from Havana to Santo Domingo.

I saw online that this airlines recently started its flight to Guangzhou via somewhere else, and it's a biweekly flight. There are some Chinese people who moved to Venezuela for business when oil price was high and the country wasn't under much sanctions.

The chinese population in Venezuela is substancial since decades ago (30 - 40+ years or more), and not only due to the oil & gas business.

That check-in sounds like when I used to go on holiday in the 80s. Behind the desk was a cut out of the seat map. When you checked in they took stickers with the seat numbers off the seat map and put them on your boarding card.

Not only is Caracas - Moscow their longest flight, they also have to take a huge detour around northern Norway and Finland, similar routing to Russian airlines. Most likely due to the airline being sanctioned from overflying European territory.

I would imagine Conviasa is bleeding money? Business class looks empty, and this 340-600 burns a lot of fuel. And I would imagine their flights to Moscow and Tehran have far, far, far less demand than Mexico City. Edit: I guess Josh answered that question...suspicious cargo?

nice review Josh as I never heard of that airline. Food and plane looked good overall, and the FA seem very nice. Your comment about safety and the lights on at take-off is really not a safety issue is just a norm in the industry. But thanks for a great review and safe travels.

Hey Josh! Very cool review, thanks for sharing. To briefly answer your question, the reason for Damascus and Moscow as destinations is the close ties the current government has with these two countries, thus adding to your point about the “special” cargo. As the airline is sanctioned worldwide, it’s got only few options as international destination. I’m Venezuelan currently living in Caracas, and was actually impressed you chose to fly with Conviasa. I’m a big fan of yours and have watched your reviews for a few years now. It feels cool to know you visited my home country and did a review in such an abstruse airline for others to get to know. I’ve only flown with them once on their outdated A340-300 from CUN-CCS back in 2020 returning from college in the US for a vacation, yet the experience was awful. I really appreciate you being over in Caracas and hope you had a good stay. Hopefully, the current political situation will change soon and we can have you back for more flight reviews in this amazing country.

You stayed at the same hotel as your friend Noel Philips, but he did the reverse flight (CCS-NLU), in addition to flying that 737-200 domestically to Margarita Island, the Venezuelan resort on the Caribbean, mostly visited by Russian tourists. The hotel is close to the airport, meaning that it's NOT in Caracas, but in a nearby seaside city called Maiquetía. Caracas itself is in an inland valley at relatively high altitude, with a tall coastal mountain range separating it from Maiquetía, the airport, and the sea.

This aircraft used to be G-VOGE (named 'Cover Girl') back in her Virgin Atlantic days. I flew on a sister ship but not this one. Glad that the old Cover Girl is still flying, better than the alternative I suppose, but Conviasa seems a bit sketchy for my tastes. What language does Josh speak besides English and German?

Not so much old but a fuel hog. Airlines with some sense of sustainability just got rid of them, and what better deal to sell it overpriced to a fellow sanctioned country? I bet in the open market it would have costed at least half if not a third of whatever the regime of Venezuela paid for it, probably enough for Iran to recover and get something more efficient with 2 engines.
