Any organization that simply gives you a raise for passing a background check is not a properly managed organization, nor an organization you want to be a part of. Take the money for sure, and start looking for a new employer.

@@ls6097 I dont really agree with this statement. I have been cleared now for 4 years regular secret and I also got a substantial pay raise when the time came. This will obviously vary employment to employment but, I was significantly more marketable when bidded on contracts and being able to fill those shoes. It does make my value as an employee worth more since the work I'm able to do is wider and more profitable.

Your recommendation of including “ability to obtain” on Indeed had hit me like such a speeding truck, and I’m baffled that doing so never occurred to me. I had just gotten an IAT 2 certification and was struggling to find jobs that didn’t require applicants to already have clearance, so thank you for this simple but amazing video!

Just in case people don't understand. First, whether you as an individual *want* a security clearance is irrelevant. The company you work for/government decides if you *need* a clearance for the job you are in. And *they* decide the level. Someone in the comments claimed that a secret clearance is no more than a regular background check. That is incorrect. A secret clearance investigation is much more thorough and takes much longer than a standard background check.

First of all, thanks for all the videos you make Josh, they're the most informative and interesting I've seen on this platform! I'm from Australia, and the funny situation here is that companies that require a security clearance and ask if you are eligible for one prefer to take people with a security clearance instead of hiring you and applying on your behalf. It's not official, but I got the information from one of my acquaintances that worked in such an organisation, and from my experience of applying for a job. It seems that the only way for now is joining the military and getting the security clearance and then moving into Cyber Security.

I held a TS/SCI clearance for about 12 years before walking away from cybersecurity/IT altogether 2+ years ago. People need to understand that all the things that you discuss in your other video (as to why you disliked/regretted the various jobs in your linkedin resume) get ratcheted up to the max when you work in a position that requires a TS security clearance. "Secret" clearances are basically nothing more than a standard criminal background check. Most companies worth working at are going to require a background check, they simply don't go around giving it a fancy name to make you feel special because it doesn't serve them in any way. Perhaps MOST important thing to consider is that if you think you want a TS (Top Secret) clearance....then you are handing over practically everything about you that there is to know in an electronic document file that is NOT at all secure. The OPM data breach proved this and I can say with total confidence that nothing has substantially changed since then. So understand that not only is everything about you going to be "out there", but also too much information about your loved ones, family members, neighbors, coworkers, friends, classmates......are you getting the picture?.....will be dragged into "your file" as well, and they do a TERRIBLE job in their stewardship of that information. I was one of the millions of TS clearance holders whose information was compromised in the OPM breach. So far, I have only had my bank accounts raided from people overseas and my banks thankfully caught it before it was too late. Let me repeat that...MY BANK caught it. Not the FBI, not the NSA, not any other government agency. MY BANK. God only knows who else has "my file" and what their purposes for it may be. So think very long and hard about chasing a $$ amount by taking on the massive risk associated with TS clearances. In my honest opinion, no cybersecurity professional who actually believes what they preach should be taking on that risk...not for a paycheck anyway. That paycheck can easily be had by simply delivering value to a valuable organization/company. You won't find those in the government sector.

My friend I could not agree more. Not to mention they say they need all of your information to make sure they can "trust" you. Ok so if someone is willing to give up everything about themselves for a career or a dollar wouldn't that question the ability of that person to withhold secret information about themselves? What makes the job any different? Yes investigations going as far as to track down your friends knock on your neighbors doors and ask questions about you etc. I have seen what working for the government has done to grown men who stay there for a long period of time and how it has broken them down mentally. It's good money career but like you said the security aspect and just as you are protecting valuable information the best in the world from different countries will be watching you too. So when it is all said and done you gotta ask yourself all of these things because this is the reality.

As a professional who has worked in the health sector briefly… HCISSP is only good for cyber professionals who focus on Health sector only while CISSP does not care about your sector. Secondly, for those who have been in health sector for long with little or no technical experience, HCISSP is an exam they can take that will allow them to easily transition into Cyber Security. For instance, if you have a nursing degree but want to transition to cyber security, try HCISSP

@JoshMadakor
@JoshMadakor 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Grease, this is a really good question. From what I've heard, it's "easier" to reinstate because you already exist in JPAS and you've already had a clearance adjudicated once. What I _IMAGINE_ is, OPM will try to bridge the gap, perhaps with a new SF-86 and (huge guess here) and perhaps be less stringent on the background investigation if there was no problems with your last adjudication. Big guess. I will pin your question so other people see this. I'm curious too, I've thought about this a lot.

So to give a bit more context to this answer, DoD clearances are moving to something called Continuous Vetting. It is currently being implemented now. Basically, you are regularly reviewed and update records as needed but shouldn't have to go through the entire process again. Depending on when your clearance expired you may fall under this. Either way, don't let it discourage you. Being sponsored is much easier if you already held a clearance before and for some reason it was downgraded or expired. Hope this helps.

Welcome! *USUALLY* you need to be a united states citizen to get a clearance, but there are ways around it. For ex. You have a particular skill set that the US govt MUST have, I'm sure they will make a way for you. Also, sometimes the US has programs (MAVNI, for ex) where you are allowed to enlist in the military, and they will then grant you citizenship afterwards, in which case you can get a clearance.

Depends on your end goal. Even if you want to do Government work, there are plenty of fun and awesome jobs where a clearance is not needed. Having a clearance does not always mean a ton more money. It could also be a crappy job. If you need to work in a SCIF, chances are you will be in an isolated location. Some are even located under ground with no widows, cell access, or general internet access. A clearance sounds cool but not always the Hollywood life. ;)

@@JoshMadakor I enlisted in 2013 and had a drawn-out security clearance investigation because of my dual citizenship with Russia. From what I recall, what matters with dual citizenship is how prominent it is in your life and how that could possibly affect your allegiance. They look at what your tangible ties are, under what conditions your foreign parent(s) immigrated here, what they did before, etc. It’s probably just a very case-by-case situation judging by how many factors go into it. It is possible, yes, but they are really going to dig into your life and anyone you know.

Yes, easiest way is to burn your fingerprints in acid and meet my friend, Hector, in Tijuana. He's on Calle 2 by the "hole" between 2-3pm. He can get you a new passport and background. Bring $5k and be prepared to show your tattoos and disclose and gold teeth. You can choose from three names: Bob, Steve or CoffeX. Once you have your papers and identity, find a spouse and start a family. Wait for you children to start college to form a very convincing identity. After this on your daughter's graduation eve, restart this video at 0:01.

Hey man. This is a great question, ultimately it's up to the adjudicator that gets their hands on your file. If it was a long time ago and you have show that you have taken steps to become a well-behaved contributor to society, they may grant you varying levels of a clearance. It really just depends :). There is a site somewhere that shows a bunch of adjudication decisions and why they were made, but I can't find it. You could read through some OPM documentation by doing a google search such as "OPM adjudication decision" and see what comes out. Best of luck :o)

_would that affect the adjudication process?_ Probably not. Especially for something that small, if you are truthful about it, it's more than likely not going to raise any red flags. If you had something small and blatantly lied about it, that wouldn't be good. I've heard of people doing all sorts of drugs in the past and being honest about it, then being granted clearances.
