We pick up this episode where we left off after the drama in the Gulf Stream. I turned back from my trip from Hilton Head to the Abacos, Bahamas. I arrive back in Jacksonville, Florida and assess some needed repairs on the boat. At the end of the episode, I talk about both the support and the negative comments from last episode. #Sailing #svGiraffe

I'm glad you posted your experience, people don't get an accurate picture of what happens when things go wrong, because the first thing to happen is to turn the camera off. Your channel is real, sincere, honest. Don't change that.

Hey Josh, it takes guts to turn the camera on yourself and expose your vulnerable side and raw emotions. Also even the most seasoned sailors have issues and things go awry, and make mistakes. In situations where you have seconds to make a decision which could be literally life changing or saving you wont get it right every time, however what is important is to have a contingency for when this happens. Your contingency was to head back to Florida, you executed it, it worked and you managed the situation as well as anyone could have. Hat off to you skipper, I'd sail with you anytime.

Today is veterans day....I thank you for your service in The Navy. Also thanks for true-life experiences on your videos. These are an inspiration to everyone who loves sailing. At 79 yrs. old I am primarily a day-sailor and coastal sailor, and have come to love this aspect of the sport. However, I look forward to taking some vicarious voyages with you on future videos. Best of Luck and fair winds.

"Never Does a Calm Sea Make For a Good Sailor" On some deliveries I've made, I've had the crap scared out of me more than once. Take my word for it, Your ordeal could have been much worse if it had involved crew with experience that had been false embellished. Be thankful for your "baptism" and the experience you gained. Although we do the best we know how to prepare ourselves and our vessel, No one knowingly puts themselves in these situations. Lastly, be thankful that you survived it and did not become just another statistic, Josh. Carry On, Sailor.

Kudos Josh, presenting it real is the only way, in my opinion, to share your sailing adventures to the community. When it happens at night, on the water, strong winds and beating into the Gulf Stream.... it doesn't get any more real than that! From one ex-military solo sailor to another, thanks for not leaving real life on the editing floor. Navigate safe Captain.

Josh, Thank you for sharing your experience and honest emotions. We all make mistakes and learn from them. I just wanted to mention to you that we had a handheld radio at the helm for the same reason as you mentioned but the signal wasn't as good as the cabin radio so we opted to have the cabin radio wired to the helm station and added a handset. We get much better reception. Just something to consider for your needs as well.

Recently started watching your sailing videos as I am following in similar footsteps as yours beginning with a week long live-aboard sailing course in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. I want to say thank you for sharing your experiences. I also want to say the 10% that were posting hate comments about your last video have only revealed that they are not risk takers. They're the same people that will grow old being tormented with regrets and always asking themselves "what if". Not regrets for things they have done but for things they wish they had done. You were balancing on the boundary of what you mentally and physically could handle and I envy you for that. Being in that situation and that state of mind caused you to come out the other end a stronger and wiser person. The growth that takes place in something like that can't be found anywhere else. I'm a Marine Corps veteran and I've been in situations where I found myself in tears. It's not a sign of weakness. Anyone with a shred of wisdom would know that.

The fact that you came back from this safe and for the most part sound, as well as the vessel, for you level of knowledge;! that in itself is a miracle. When you rested, you reflected and the inpection is vital, you also have met a fabulos sailmaker!!! So not to worry of the haters, all sailors, even the best run into the perfect combination of circumstances and this is what makes or breaks the average sailor! You did well, yet I would have never solo sailed without a weather vane!!! Also it is a benefit to reachout to the sailing community for all the knowledge you can get, many have underestimated The Gulf Stream (NAC). I do wish you had more info and first hand conversations with some of us that had the same nightmarish dealings. Glad to hear you have taken on a vessel with a hsitory, you will learn of the bones and spine of true boat builders.

Glad you are still making videos. You have balls of bronze for solo sailing in that small boat and for sharing it all, even the bad moments. The shakedown was a good stress test for the boat. Josh, I was blown away by these videos. I've been sort of binge-watching your channel. But how I binge is I tend to jump around a bit. Mostly because I watch KZbin on my tv using my AppleTV and the interface kind of blows. So all of the sudden, I was watching a video that said you were selling your boat. I was blown away, because I have not seen many KZbin sailors love their boat as much as you did. So I started zig-zagging through your channel looking for an explanation. When I saw both this video and the sleep-deprived video right after your scare in the Gulf Stream. Wow, I am blown away. You are the man! A coward would have cut all of your emotional recounts. I am so proud of you. You never pull punches. You show everything as it happens and that takes guts. Not only because idiots will attack, but because you have to edit the footage so you have to relive that moment over and over again. Solo sailing is insane. Sleep deprivation is a killer. I have enjoyed your victories and it was tough watching you suffer through that. Please, please, please, keep posting.

Hey Josh, i dream of a life on a sailboat, i love that on one side you are using nature to travel, and on the other side nature dictates when and where. This video and ep.8 were the first two video's that capture sailing like it is, without the cocktails and dolphins. My hearth is still racing, im so glad you had the stamina and willpower to not only see this through, but contact the right people to turn around this hopeless situation. Will sail with you!

Good channel. You do a nice job. There will always be builders of sand castles, and people who kick them down. It is much harder to create than it is to tear down. Ultimately, it's a form of jealousy and, sadly, the reality is it does sting, but the trick then it to carry on, which you do!

Just finding your videos. I'm glad you survived to tell the tale. It must have been very difficult to upload that footage, but I'm glad you did. No matter how prepared or experienced you are, things can go wrong and very quickly. A lot of the sailing channels show only the positive experiences. Much like the vlogs out there promoting solo female international travels it creates a false view of the world that can lead to very bad things for those inspired by them. Better for your viewers to see jut how dangerous and frightening it can be, I hope it encourages them to plan better for their own adventures. Thanks for sharing.

Rock On, Josh, was looking forward to seeing this part 2! What you accomplished is beyond multi tasking, single handing a sailboat with a camera. I cant do that even in the calm conditions on the ICW. Then the editing. Keep on producing.

Thanks for sharing your journey, especially the rough spots. I think it's important for people to see it's not all sunshine and margaritas. Even more importantly thank you for addressing the haters. Please know that for every basement dwelling keyboard warrior there are tons of silent viewers enjoying your content.

Don’t worry about those negative viewers. You are the true adventurer. Regarding the main sail repair, make sure to also check ALL the grommets of the sails since your mainsail will be halfway taken down. When it comes to your crossing to the Bahamas, get down to Port Everglades Inlet via the inter coastal waterway. And there are plenty anchorages to spend the night along the way. When crossing the Gulf Stream, don’t do it on a northern wind. And the 3 rules are... Reef Early, Reef Early and Reef Early. Bon voyage!

Great job Josh. I've been there on those sleep deprived times and wondered why it affected me so much. It takes balls to turn the camera on and share that part. Keep heading towards your goal. Because if you don't, who will?
