I was at Scott Speed's last F1 race, the absolutely bonkers 2007 European Grand Prix at the Nürburgring. I'm quite certain I remember seeing one of the Toro Rosso's aquaplaning sideways across the tarmac in front of us, just after the (then newly christened) Schumacher S corner. I'm not sure if it was Speed or Liuzzi, because I've never been able to see it back on any TV registrations or trackside recordings. Either way Franz Tost was not impressed with his performance and that was the end of Scott Speed's F1 career.
@30623306234 жыл бұрын
As far as I can recall, both of Toro Rosso's went out. Speed was one of the first guys, then Liuzzi and I remember, Tonio almost hit the Safety Car while sliding. This is not a 100% sure, but I think that was the scenario
@Astfgl4 жыл бұрын
@@3062330623 Liuzzi almost split the safety car in half and ended in the first corner gravel trap like so many others. I'm not sure exactly what happened to Speed; I suppose we'll see that in this video soon enough. But whatever I saw happen in front of me on track, that wasn't the end of the race for that particular driver. I'm pretty sure they recovered from the slide and drove on, which is probably why we've never seen a replay of it on video.
@30623306234 жыл бұрын
@@Astfgl I'm pretty sure Speed spun off too. There were like 7-8 drivers, I think Hamilton, Rosberg, Button and Sutil also went out in that corner, and maybe even a Super Aguri. I was watching a lot of F1 when Scott Speed was in it. I was a bit surprised to start up rFactor's ARCA '08 mod last year and find Scott on the roster there; I was even more surprised to look up the results of the real series and realise he nearly won it. That made me reconsider his ability, so finding out he has four rallycross titles doesn't really surprise me. From from I understand, it wasn't his ability behind the wheel that was the problem at Toro Rosso, it was all the other stuff that differentiates an F1 driver from a pro racing driver. Gerhard Berger's on the record as saying: "Scott Speed should never have been in Formula 1. It was a completely wrong decision to put this guy in F1. To be fair, he can be quick - but he doesn’t have the commitment, he doesn’t have the skills. Franz [Tost] and myself saw it quite soon, but internally we had to fight quite a while to make people understand."

@@caleblee7897 Can't really fault Red Bull there; the best Toyota team there in 2007 was either the 83, 22, or 00, none of which were particularly high bars. That was pretty mild. On this side of the pond we remember Scott Speed via his caustic personality, wild outbursts, getting fired from STR for lashing out at his team before being fired by NASCAR's Team Red Bull a few years later for doing the same thing to his crew there, before finally finding peace and success in Global Rallycross. Oh and for successfully racing in Formula Renault while wearing a diaper.

@@crazydrummer181 not exactly. There was a massive pileup which took out all the front runners, Lake Speed was just lucky to have avoided it.

I actually really liked Scott Speed for some reason. He had something special and I'm sad he never got to race in F1 after that faithful race in 2007

I always wondered what happened to him... I didn't really follow F1 as closely as I have since 2012 so... this video has provided some good information and some good entertainment. Keep an eye out for Logan Sargeant though. I must admit... I have been very impressed with him in F3 this year. I didn't think much of him last year when he raced for Carlin but he's really stepped it up. America might just have an F1 driver again in the future. Just subscribed btw. Really been enjoying watching your videos and loving what I hear from you. :) Thanks!

Scott Speed did pretty well in F1 given the circumstances: he was fast and gritty in style. Should much potential, if only he could have stayed longer.

"Speed" is just a tragically ironic name for a bad f1 driver. Soon we'll have "Max Power" on the grid at this rate.
