I use the teenager system with a hose pipe and spray gun, keeps them out of doors and away from flat screens. Did try a spray system but high winds and differing direction made it a no go on most days. We use a misting set under a canopy for the orchids and to cool the front yard. That works great as we position the heads behind pillars and walls. You have reminded me of my school days in London, on the holidays I would be put on a steam train to Wrexham in N Wales, where my uncle ran the family market garden farm. It was run by him and my father but one had to go to war, dad picked the short straw but thankfully lived through it. He and mum celebrated VE day and I was born 9 months later!!!! So summers were spent picking strawberries, veg, driving horses and the MF grey tractor, not a bad life for a London kid.

This is my first year using drip tape. Its a love hate relationship. When its working I love it. Running for 6 hours to get a deep soak it has to be baby sat every so often. Randomly one of the lines will possibly blow off. Sometimes it dosent happen, sometimes it happens twice a week on different zones. Never the same line, just random lines. it is pressure regulated at 15 psi so you would think if it was a pressure issue it would happen all the time.

Could not agree more. Very good summary of both methods, Josh! Drip: way better for conserving water. If at all possible go for it. Overhead: easy and good for leafy greens! Room for both in a large garden, depending on context.

Josh.... hitting on an extensive subject here. I can see the value of a training on a teaching farm as the range of contexts and potential in “dialing in” considering the numerous different factors could really benefit from some exploration. I’m speaking from a context, for instance, where we routinely adapt to 50 degree differences in the course of a single day. Additionally, due to the influences from such temperature ranges, the wind can be an influencing factor for part of the given day as well. Inside, outside, humidity, pests, types of soil, water pressure or gravity fed, season and crop cycle... this list can go on! My point here is that irrigation, being that is such an obvious factor in success that it would also warrant ... and benefit from some indepth exploration and consideration. Also the notion ,quickly mentioned here, of quick connect, use of multiple systems, and the value of context to inform best practice cannot be overly attended to. As always your videos and scope of knowledge and passion area treasure....... thank you.

I run budget drip. 1/2 inch distribution tubing with 1/16th holes drilled straight thru at about 5 and 7 oclock. It works well for square foot gardening grids.

I do this too with rainwater / low pressure. I used a pin heated with a candle. I made a video on some gotchas.

Short answer: It depends. I've got my plots setup with both. Depending on what's in the current rotation, we'll decide which to use. Sometimes it's BOTH for the same crop.

The one thing about watering is if you should use mulch over your compost or not. In my garden i use a mulch of leaves from our trees over the compost and i must say the ground is rarely dry. To me compost should not been used as a mulch. It is a very precious element of the garden.

I'm thinking of making a quick flood to feed the soil evenly. Drip just doesn't spread out, and the soil life dries out. Also, I use rain water with no pumps so volume is low unless I can cause a quick flood by dosing a set amount. ( I put a few tours of my garden up.)

Another factor is using a fertilizer tank that injects fertilizer. With Overhead you would be wasting the fertilizer as it will go in other places other than the plant itself. Where as drip allows you to put the fertilizer right at the root zone.

Charles Dowding says it is a myth. I have watered over head during the day and not had any problems either. Think about this - here in the South we get a lot of afternoon showers and then the sun comes back out and it does not damage the plants. You should check out Charles Dowdings no-dig gardening. Very good. I want to finish by saying that josh is very informative also. I have learned lots from him and appreciate him.

Josh, another great video. I do have a question, if my water hose lays in the sun the water gets very, very hot. I have to let it run before I water any plants. Are you concerned about injuring plants with the hot water in your irrigation systems? Thanks.

Why don't most market gardeners not mulch beds? I watch all of these channels on YT and I rarely see mulch on beds. Is this for making it easier to switch crops out and rotate beds and not having to move mulch around or is it because you can limit your expenses and not having to constantly replenish the mulch? I was thinking about what we hear about the soil borne bacteria and diseases and splash up.

The compost doubles as the mulch. After using it for a few years and your soil improves the soil and compost holds the water pretty good. I am sure that flipping beds plays a part also.

High density planting will help supress the weeds. I dont mulch.

I wasn't taking into account that by using a drip or irrigation system with controlled water distribution you can eliminate splash back from the soil onto the plants. The more I thought about it the more I realize that with a high tunnel deep mulch system there isn't much of a need for top dressing and if I did it would just create more work at crop rotation. thanks for the reply.

Josh, what is your PSI that you are running to the wobblers? We have been battling with trying to get them to throw far enough with our well.

I don't have a regulator on the wobblers now so it's whatever my pump is creating. I don't have a gauge on it either so I don't know. If you aren't getting enough throw with your well pump then it's probably more of an issue of flow rate (gpm) than the highest pressure. You can only use a few wobblers at a time if you have a smaller well.

Josh (or anybody) - Have you ever tried used billboard vinyl in place of ag tarp to snuff out grass & weeds? Seems like it should work if UV stable & thick eonugh. Does it leach anything toxic?

I checked into them. They are cheap and very durable. $40 and good in wind. But, they were pvc/vinyl which isn't healthy in sun. Not sure if all are like that.
