When Josh was asking for recommendations, I suggested Batman Arkham Asylum. At the time, Batman had a mediocre track record of games. The last game before AA was LEGO Batman the year prior, and before that it was Batman Begins in 2005. Also, it was being developed by Rocksteady Studios, who at the time only had one game under their belt; Urban Chaos for the PS2 and Xbox. Going in, the only things people were excited for was the fact that Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill were reprising their roles from the animated series. However, then the game came out and it surprised everyone with its classic Batman story and gameplay that truly made you feel like the caped crusader.

The Silent Hill 2 Remake definitely qualifies. Nobody thought that Bloober Team had what it takes to make a good version of one of the best survival horror games of all time. But they really surprised us despite poor marketing and a long development time.

Expecting the Mario + Rabbids games on this list. - Was a bit off for a Mario game, being XCOM lite. - Included Rabbids - Didn't include Rayman, which more people loved - Included Rabbids - Had a goofy arse premise that didn't make a lick of sense - Oh...and did I also mention it included Rabbids? And yet...IT WORKED!

The Caligula Effect 2. First game was marketed in a way that wasn't technically lying, but nowadays saying you're being worked on by people who had worked on Persona before raises the bar impossibly high. This makes the second game's sheer glow-up graphically and gameplay wise impressive, especially when the company's next game MONARK might actually be their worst.

Sonic Frontiers, I remember people thinking that it was gonna be bad, and I don’t blame them considering Sega’s track record.

Yeah. I had that Toy Story 2 game on the Dreamcast. My brother and I were shocked at how solid it was. Probably one of the few good movie tie-in games.

While the fact that I always loved it takes away the surprise factor, I’d give a “Surprisingly Good Game” award to Kirby’s Epic Yarn. A mainline Kirby game where Kirby can’t use Inhale? Blasphemy, I say! But Good-Feel and HAL Labs made one of the most adorable and aesthetically pleasing games in the series, complimented by a simple, yet fun moveset! Not to mention the wonderful soundtrack (Nintendo Music when?) and amazing transformations! It’s a real gem!

Phoenotopia Awakening. It ranks as one of my all-time favorite games, yet because of poor marketing the game did not sell well. It's basically Zelda II ONLY GOOD!

You did make a list of disappointing games…sometimes I ask if the 2020s tempted you to make a top 15 or 20? Now time for opposite the games were in development hell,Franchise going downhill,or even companies and Genres having bad track record yet surprisingly was great some even border on Franchise saving.
