Devil May Cry is a horror action puzzler game released in 2001 following the adventures of Dante as he hunts down Mundus, the dark lord.
So let's go back, replay this now 20 year old game and ask the question, was it actually, any good?
Thank you to the Patreons supporters and Twitch subs who keep the channel alive and fill my dark soul with light.

Well, THIS is why it's iconic in the first place. That scene was absolutely epic. I remember when I first played the game, back when it came out on PS2. I really thought I screwed up and that was a game over. The inscriptions suggest that no human can touch the sword and survive, therefore you are purposedly induced to think it is some sort of puzzle and you failed because you missed something. And then Dante does this utlimate badass stuff and it's hype as heck. Imagine passing from "oh, damn, I screwed up, it's back to the checkpoint" to "WTF? That's SO BADASS!". The no-sell on the sword stab is absolutely epic.

I think you absolutely nailed this review of the game. Like you, I played DMC when I was pretty young; I even remember when DMC 2 was announced and ads for it were showing up in Game Informer magazines haha. I played the heck out of DMC, but always felt like the camera angles were clunky and there were significant inconsistencies in some of the gameplay, all of which you highlighted in the video. The last boss fight ESPECIALLY stood out to me as it made no sense when compared to the rest of the gameplay and boss fights. I couldn't agree more on the awful voice acting as well. But overall DMC has a special place in my heart and I think the things they did right absolutely outweigh the things they did wrong. Also if you happen to read this comment, please consider doing a "Was It Good" for the Sly Cooper series. It's an excellent series of games that I hold very dear to my heart :)

Great video! This game has several retrospective videos about it and a lot of them say things like, “Not every thing has aged well.” Well … it’s 20 years old. It may be true that "it hasn't aged well", but...some games even older *have* aged well. Chrono Trigger, and F-Zero X (bugs and balance notwithstanding) are two such examples. Probably more. Super Mario World, perhaps? Street Fighter 2 turbo still has its echoes in SF6. Smash melee is still the best smash. Marvel vs. Capcom 2 lasted for over a decade (two?) before MVC3 came along. And Seiken Densetsu 3 got a remaster as Trials of Mana.

No mention of the enemy files? Enemies in this game all have certain weaknesses, and exploiting said weaknesses can destroy them instantly. I don't remember the Nobodies, but maybe that's because I suppressed the memory. I recalled most of the camera issues -- Nelo 2 forcing you to fight standing still and dodge fireballs by sound, the anxiety-inducing way you had to turn your back on Nightmare to get the dials lit, learning to run into a new camera angle for a fraction of a second so it didn't cut back the moment you changed direction... But those gibbering Resi things? Nope, nope, nope. They hit like a truck as well.

This, to me, is still the best DMC game. It's like this perfect mix of high-quality action and awesome ambience, which is something the newer titles are just lacking. It is also the reason why I prefer Bayonetta over modern DMC. Bayonetta has the complex and smooth action of modern DMC, but it also has a very well crafted world, with lots of background information. It's a different kind of ambience than the one from DMC1, but escpecially with Bayonetta 1, every trip through Paradiso made me stop for a second and rotate the camera to observe my surroundings. There is none of that in modern DMC. I also prefer the combat in DMC1 over DMC3 and DMC4 actually. In later games, combat gets more complex, sure, but I like how in DMC1 knowing your enemies was far more important than having quick reflexes. Every enemy has a certain weakness, through which he can be killed either in a single blow, or at least much, much quicker. The puppets are vulnerable to air juggling, the Blades die instantly when you hit their back with a Helm Breaker. Sins are weak to the shotgun. Shadow can be killed instantly by shooting him with your handguns while standing on his spear. Nobodies can be stunlocked with Alastor. Death Scissor and Death Scythe are highly vulnerable to the Helm Breaker as well and Frosts don't like Ifrit's roundhouse kick.

Awesome video! I really appreciate that as much as this video is a review that examines Devil May Cry with a modern lense, it is also a retrospective that respects Devil May Cry and recognises what made some of its designs choices and iconic moments amazing for its time, rather than just lambasting the quality and writing for being outdated by today's standards. I've always felt in a review both can be done and neither needs to necessarily conflict with each other, so much respect for achieving this balance! Just some neat little tidbits of information I wanted to add on to. Mentioned at 35:50 the "projectile parry" system is present in other aspects of the game, but it mostly exists as a neat way to combat other enemies for style points and isn't used to solve further puzzles like it was here. Phantom the giant fire spider shoots fireballs that can be hit with your sword to reflect back at him. And the same can be done to energy ball blasts shot by Nelo Angelo. There might be more, but those were the ones that I remembered off the top of my head. And about the weird shift in mechanics for the final boss fight, it's interesting how consistently inconsistent Capcom was about the final boss fights of their action genre during this time. They do this weird shift in mechanics again in Devil May Cry 3, where you suddenly fight alongside Vergil and the game throws a random double team feature at you that is never seen again. And then Onimusha 2 is a samurai game, but for the final boss you basically become megaman and shoot lasers in an indiana jones style chase fight. Sadly, I haven't played more of Capcom's titles from that era, so I can't say if they do this in any other titles they have.

Dmc 1 is my favorite one out of the series. Idk… coming from fighting games and smash bros. I guess i got good at predicting opponents moves. Kinda like looking at how a hand raise and the frames it takes to connect. This is another reason why Dark Souls became one of my favorite franchises ever. DS, Dmc1 and RE1Remake gave me that Zelda 64 vibe that a grew up with. The worlds and enemies that i grew to love to face were in full presentation in the DS series, DMC series and RE1Remake for me. So i guess the camera angles never really bothered me 😅. After playing all DMC games released from release window i went into the fan base. Makes the games feel like they have more to offer. The speed run scene, shit posting scene and guides are always looked up after i finish a game. The only exception i let leak through is asking a friend to tell me without spoils.

the shotgun bug was the best, just constantly switch directions and spam fire the shotgun, and the animation for reloading the shotgun is canceled, effectively giving you an auto shotgun.

Instead of wearing out your fingers with the shotgun just move from side to side, same effect. Another popular trick is 'grenade rolling' you can fire grenades twice as fast by side rolling after each shot.

Few memories are as fond as spending 7th grade snow days with my brother and I taking turns seeing who could make it through boss fights with a higher score. It's the most arcade game to hit consoles and the fact that it spawned four sequels and a reboot shouldn't come as a surprise.

Oh god you can see what he's talking about with the character movement and camera. Movement has that modern smoothness. Camera has the old static movement. It like John woo action in and old school Clint Eastwood western.

Shotgun firerate trick: Instead of letting go of R1 then quickly pressing it again, you can tap the left analog stick after each shot canceling the reload animation with a step.

Hr. Hayes, you said the dragon skeleton that spits fire you have to hit back was a 1 shot mechanic you never do anything with again... but it shows you that you CAN hit fire back, and on a replay you will find that phantom has the exact same mechanic in both his boss fights and his hallway fights where you can kill him for red orbs. It's showing the player a secret for his replay, OR if you discovered it during the phantom fights it's calling back to that and rewarding the player for that discovery as he will already know how to solve the puzzle.

As someone who 100% all DMC games, let me tell you, sure HaH Sranks on DMC5 were hard, but goddamn DMC1's DMD mode was straight up crushing. Nightmare 3, Griffon 3 and Mundus 2 in particular where endurance tests. Still, I actually had a pretty decent time, I'd actually recommend it to the ones of you who like pain and suffering All in all, DMC1, especially for its release date, was far ahead of its time

You should try playing it without becoming overreliant on Air Raid, using it as a crutch. You'll advance your combat capabilities and enjoy the now diversified gameplay more, and your mission rating will improve as well, encouraging you to try more advanced combat tactics and feeding into an evolving gameplay loop, which continues on harder difficulties. The camera and lock-on will also mess up less as melee combat seems to be what the game was designed around.

Listening to this as someone who's gone through DMD, the gameplay and combat discussions are really fun I forgot how stupidly strong Air Raid is on Normal, I almost never use it anymore unless I'm fighting Sin Scythes lol I think DMC1 is my favorite in the series, then 5 and 3 Warts and all, it's by no means perfect and on a mechanical level it's fairly simple, dmc3 and 5 both add in tremendous and wonderful ways to more fully flesh out the combat But there's something about dmc1 that just pulls me to it, the atmosphere, the music, the camp, even the simplicity of the combat, easy to learn but harder to master Each additional run really tests you, DMD really puts everything you have and learned to the test I'm glad this game is getting more eyes on it c:

Also, as an aside, Ifrit is actually really useful imo, I think it does more damage to Blades and Griffon and it's especially useful for Nightmare, with his demon core mechanics. Around 35:50-ish you mention that you wish returning fireballs was more common, but the parry system is used all the time in the game, especially at higher-level play, you can return Phantom's fireballs, Mundas's fireballs, you're almost guaranteed to parry Nelo Angelo in his fights at some point, you can create an opening during the Nightmare fight by parrying one of its attacks
