Joshua is one of the best players of our times. This was recorded in 1994! I saw him last year with his Elastic Band. They performed at the Blue Note. My Trumpet player and I were speechless. JR keeps creatively pushing the limits with his music and jazz.

I really love how this was recorded a year before I was born, yet it feels so new. If it was pop, people would be commenting on how old it was and how they used to like this song. Instead we comment on how good the players are and the techniques they're using etc. Jazz is a way of life! Thanks uploader. PEACE!

Folks, the song is actually called "Straight Ahead." It's a Kenny Dorham composition based on the rhythm changes, with a harmonic substitution or two. Check it out on the Dorham Blue Note CD _Una Mas_.

It's a Sonny Rollins head (with an unforgettable one-note melody) - I forget the name. It's on Dizzy Atmosphere Changes, which predates the Eternal Triangle by 10 years and is a whole step lower.

St. Thomas. There's another killer version of this tune on Joshua Redman Quartet; Spirit of the Moment, Live at the Village Vanguard.

this set should be recorded in the log of significant events that took place in the 20th century. like a footnote in the next gem's history books. and oh yeah, in '94 blade, mcbride and redman perfectly resonated with the frequency of the universe for several minutes with the utmost groove. and no one noticed, but its on the test

I am sooooo GRATIFIED! That MASTERS - like Joshua and WYNTON - to name a few - REALIZE the INTRINSIC value - to the crux of the art form! Of course; this is a brand new century and the art form, we collectively refer to as jazz, is constantly ' morphing' - necessarily. But the artistry of the past, that some 'listeners', deem "..., old 'tyme'", is YET TO BE EQUALLED!!!

He is one of the only players I've experienced who is so well rounded. His ears are HUGE! He plays with such emotion and technically he's a monster. With the passing of Michael Brecker, this world needs players like JR. Although MB was one of the greats of our times. JR is stepping it up big time. If you have seen him live, do it. He will blow your mind.

Wonderful sax playing, very enjoyable. The melody is not clearly heard until about 1:40. I heard Sonny Rollins live in concert performing this song, St. Thomas, about 12 years ago - and I can hear a lot of similarities in certain phrasing.

Jonny King's solo is super underrated. Great development, strong phrasing... it's just overshadowed by Redman. And his comping throughout, especially during McBride's solo, is laying in the pocket really hard. mmmmmmmmmmmmmm

You hit it right on the head. Posts about "the best" are ridiculous! The cats at this level are ALL great. It's funny because I was out having beers and a meal last week with Ed Calle and we were discussing this VERY thing. When you are comparing Henderson, Garzone, Margitza, Wayne, Bird, Dexter, Mintzer, Sonny, Lovano, Kenny G (don't get excited...Garrett), etc. you can discuss stylistic and improvisational differences but that's it. The BEST? Throw that word away and just enjoy the groove!!!

Joshua is a talented guy...he always does a great job at recycling the old, 1940s-50s, honkin', party-time sax playing. It's like testifying in church! But, as brilliant as he is, the poor cat was simply born 50 years too late. At least he makes it really fun! Wynton Marsalis has the same chops but seems so because that his olde tyme Ellington jazz doesn't survive outside of high school band festivals. Joshua is of the moment!
@omip1684 жыл бұрын
Just thought id pop by to say what a load of old shit. 50 years too late? Nonsense. He's playing Black American Music, it's timeless as Bach is timeless. No one shouts that Glen Gould was born three hundred years too late. Then your description of "40/50s party sax" it deserves more respect than that.

@Thesaxguy111 жыл бұрын
I totally agree! Plus, if you look at jazz as the language of music (as I do) then classical music is just the jazz of 200+ years ago. As far as being up to date musically... is it fun to listen to? Are people moved by it? Are they all grooving? Hell yes, so how much more up to date can it be than that? :)

I very much like the NY Otto Link. I've used one on my tenor for the last few years, and I believe it to be reasonably priced. The trick is to try it for yourself - and try MANY for yourself. Link's are notorious for having many bad mouthpieces, with a few great ones. The FL Link that Redman is using is certainly one of those greats.

It's nothing new. The played very well. And that is still a fun style to play over whether it is new or not. It is fuel for the soloist. The thing about having to be new is that most of the new stuff is either too free or it's too confined -neither of which is...fun. Give me something fun, I say! This was pretty fun, if you ask me!

Definitely not substitutions. Check out "Dizzy Atmosphere", the melody on the bridge outlines the changes very clearly. And definitely check out the original version of "Straight Ahead", it's from a great Kenny Dorham record called "Una Mas". It's with K.D., Herbie Hancock, Butch Warren, a 17 year old Tony Williams, and Joe Henderson, and it's Joe's first record date.

I agree, Joshua is amazing. I have been studying his music since "Wish"; however, you may want to refrain from talking about "playing rings around Brecker" until you have (at the very least!) listened to the Three Quartets (Chick Corea - Qt. No. 1 (Pt. 1) - at the Blue Note). Start with that one and become enlightened.

@nunchuckification I think he meant the quiet smooth whole range playing. he goes from bottom to top (really fast and smooth) and back down, which is terribly difficult on the saxophone. Redman is an animal! (I'm german so don't look to much at the mistakes^^)
