Joshua Reynolds at 300: 1723-2023 - Martin Postle

Martin Postle’s talk considers the reputation of Reynolds as it developed during his lifetime, and in the period following his death, from 1792 to the present day. 2023 has special importance for Kenwood with its significant collection of Reynolds’ work. How did Reynolds use the self-portrait to fashion his public-facing role as an artist and writer? Why was he an arbiter of taste, and how did his influence shape the course of art history, both during his life and since?
Martin Postle is Senior Research Fellow at the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art. His many publications include articles and exhibition catalogues on Joshua Reynolds, Thomas Gainsborough, Richard Wilson, Johan Zoffany and George Stubbs, as well as books including 'The Art of the Garden', and 'The Artist’s Model'. His current research focuses upon the compilation of a catalogue raisonné of the paintings of Joseph Wright of Derby.
Kenwood is home to one of the greatest collections of works by Joshua Reynolds (1723 - 1792) with works which span his long career as 18th century Britain’s foremost painter. Entry to Kenwood House is free.
