2008's four core sets were - Phantom Darkness - Light of Destruction - The Duelist Genesis - Crossroads of Chaos This was one of the most goated years ever in terms of the quality of the cards offered in the sets
@bayar_ Жыл бұрын
agreed and most recently, pote (spright/tearlaments) and mama (ishizu/reprints) rival 2008 in a very big way. runick and kashtira debuted as well. 2022's "graveyard vs banish" theme is the main reason why ygo is finally heading into the right direction and unlike tele-dad, "tear 0" was actually the first t0 format to be a healthy one for the game.
@danlay638 Жыл бұрын
mama wasn't a core set and the main runick cards were a side set as well. yes pote and dabl were very good, however bach and difo weren't on the same level as the others, which is why 2008 > 2022 for the core sets for me @@bayar_

I scrambled so hard to get 3 Dark Armed for Sjc Columbus in 2008 it was so insane.. Here I am this 16 year old kid trying to get 3 $220 cards last second for an event with no backup deck 😂 ah the nostalgia

Law's content has always been great. His Duel Links retrospectives were peak earbud content when I used to walk to work. And I've played maybe five hours of Duel Links total.

5:30 Invasion of Chaos was the most impactful set of all time, as far as how much of a 'leap' the game took forward. If Chaos Emperor was unerrated and unbanned it would still be a menace today.

Law makes crazy good stuff. His longform essays are insanely high quality. Like, I don’t even play Duel Links, but I’ve watched his History of Duel Links videos countless times

For anyone wondering about the zombiesworn deck Josh was talking about, Lithium had it featured in 1 or 2 cross banlist cups. By 2008 standards, its completely insane when it goes off

1:14:45 I absolutely still have Gorz PTSD and will attack with my weakest monster first. This video ends pretty much right before I got back into the game. Though, it took me until The Shining Darkness to get decent and make a good deck in Infernity.

I like nekroz as a time wizard format. Shaddols. Qliphort. Burning abyss. Ritual beast and satellerknight. Add clowns and yang zings and volcanic saw fun decks. It has variety and play styles and match ups matter.

See, there's this 3 starred little asshole named Djinn Releaser of Rituals that makes Nekroz format unfun, in addition to Maxx C and Vanities both being legal. I'm working on Dogmatika Nekroz in paper bc thankfully the problem cards are gone and the deck is kinda fun in modern yugioh.

that caius structure deck was the first time i made a 'competitive' deck i got 3 of them and it was banish monarchs with D.D. scout plane and survivor as my tribute fodder at the time i never really thought just how oppressive turning the GY off was cuz in my 10 year old mind more removed from play cards meant my gren maju and golden homunculus got stronger and scout plane and survivor kept coming back

I was lucky enough to come across a Gold Series set 1 when I was young, I ended up trading it to like this... 40 year old collector who dressed like a cowboy and offered up a large binder of halos that included other meta cards. So I got to build like 3-4 decks all halos (actually start a collection/have trades) but he def came out on top probably a couple hundred lol

I was there in the 2008 phantom darkness/light of destruction craze, and I can tell you gladiator beasts during light of destruction was not an expensive deck. (long post) When they got released in 2017 with gladiator's assault and heraklinos was kinda all they had and was a secret rare, sure. In 2008, however, when gladiator beast saw a massive spike in usage and results, it was easily THE BEST deck that you could get for cheap. Bestiari was common, laquari rare, darius common, hoplomus common, murmillo super rare, proving ground common. Once Gyzarus entered the game in 2008 and told heraklinos to gtfo as the best GB boss, it was just decided. The deck was officially a problem with like 80% of it being no higher than rare. Keep in mind that you could also just fill the deck with cards that had already been common for ages. Things like book of moon, waboku, enemy controller, threatening roar. That's like 30 cards of the main deck right there, and they're basically all common. How would it be expensive? Gyzarus, test tiger and heraklinos were the only expensive cards, and really, only gyzarus and TT were staples. Gyzarus was a super rare btw, and at the time it ran for about 45 USD. It was not a hard card to pull, it was just hard to actually buy singles of because everyone wanted it. The card was probably worth 5 damn bucks but it elevated to the 40's range just on demand alone. People were basically playing 1 heraklinos at that point, and I hoenstly believe it was not needed, they probably already owned it or just really wanted to play the other GB boss. Test tiger was an UR and the only other expensive staple, but I believe it was still around the realm of less than 50 usd. Compare that to DAD decks. DAD was at somewhere around 100-200, but some local shops would elevate it to even 300 because of the insane demand and people just not wanting to let the card go, which was the case of my local shop. That's 3 copies btw. Allure of darkness would sell for 30, 3 copies as well. Destiny draw? Around 20, zerato at 80. In a universe where DAD was roaming the earth full force, it's insane to call GB an expensive deck. It was cheap and super fun. I don't believe it was winning because it was better than dad, it just had many more players.

One thing to note about HAT as it was and HAT how it's evolved is that they're two different formats. There's a lot less Fire Fist, Infernity, and especially Sylvans running around. Maxx C actually lives up the the Bug of Balance promise there and the best decks seem to be advantage grinders like Mermail, Cardcartifact Traptrix, Geargia, and Bujins.
