I would literally buy every new release if the rarity distribution was like OCG's, I don't mind playing commons/rares as long I have access to the cards I need to build the deck I'm interested in.

Late pend era?!? Everything after chaos plant era was nuts. As soon as xyz dropped we got the chaos dragon/macrorabbit/inzektor format. Closely followed by Edragon/spell book format. The game has always had its cheese but the games interaction has never been close to plant format(and before) outside of slow trap heavy formats but even those are usually floodgate formats. Heavy traps back in the day were mostly staples and finite and floodgates outside of decree/oppression didn't blanket check the whole game(not even just the meta). Everything has been blazing speed since... not to mention they took all the stale traps to deal with many threats until after they powercrept them, today they're all at 3 iirc. Late pendulum era they just said F it in terms of powercreep.

I'll say what I said under Ruxins video aswell: The mainproblem isnt that we have too much product, it is the type of product we get. Buying sealed is alrdy a gamble so why bother trying to gamble every 2 weeks, most people cant afford that. A better way would be to make more structure decks and duel devestator types of sets. Legendary Duelists could be easily changed into a Legendary Hero Decks style product, instead of packs, you get a box with 3 structure decks, 1 for each archetype for 30-40 bucks, easy to pickup new decks and good value for otherwise mid decks. Primary reprint sets could be changed into a duel devestator style product where you get the reprints guaranteed in the box while new cards could be part of packs included in the box. Tins need promos back and a change in the rarity distribution: Making every good card a prismatic secret while mixing it with literal dogwater cards and only giving out 3 per 20€ box is an utter scam. Bring back the best cards as promos back while shifting the rarities of cards so you cant lowroll like crazy

Yeah, last product I remember buying to open was last years megatins and mama, cuz I knew I would, at the very least, get some usable cards. I didn't save money compared to singles, but I came close and would be willing to buy those sorts of things again. I enjoy thinking "maybe I'll get a starlight!" but like, only when I know I will get my money's worth. buying most sets sealed is basically flushing money down a toilet

I love how yugioh tcg has so many problems on the playerbase/comunity that you can't even point out which one is the REAL problem. i myself think that the problem is that no player wants to buy boxes/packs and instead buy singles because the most chased cards are high rarity which is different from ocg that has most chased cards as common/rares on sets (just look at kashtira, fenrir was a rare on jp).
@geek593

Every problem filters back to the game's modern design being rotten and unsustainable. Power creep, complexity creep, and archetype design make designing sets a massive undertaking. The game's playable standards are extremely high which makes it difficult to print generics that aren't so ridiculously broken that they justify buying and putting into your decks over the ludicrous number of eternal staples and archetype cards that are designed to work only within their own deck. When they do make something everyone wants they've struck diamonds and have to rarity bump to give sets any value at all outside of the archetypes they introduce. When you open a pack now you're looking for cards you know you already want. When was the last time you read a common card you pulled from a prize pack and realized it was actually worth playing outside of the deck it was intended for? Probably Pankratops. It's all unplayable pack filler because that's where the game's design is. Everything except secrets and chase ultras being unplayable or niche makes the value of sets dog water. The game design needs to change and there needs to be a massive drain on complexity and power or else we're going to keep going through print and ban cycles where the only way they have to not completely break the game with power creep is to kill the decks they just got done selling to you. The game suffers in literally every area due to the rapid power creep wall that was built in the late Pendulum era.

In regards to opening sets, it comes down to pull rates and nothing else. The TCG gets absolutely reamed compared to the OCG on pull rates, pull excitement/variety, and prices. In the OCG they have AMAZING looking rarities and every card gets printed at multiple rarities, even COMMONS have Secret Rare prints in the same set, and there's only a few cards that only get printed at Ultra Rare or higher. This makes it super fun to open boxes, as every single box is truly unique. Doing it this way keeps prices down for those who want to actually play the game, as most playable cards have low rarity prints. This incentivises players to actually buy a box or two, rather than singles because they are able to pull most of what they want and possibly in some crazy cool rarities. This keeps Stores happy because players are buying product and it keeps Collectors happy because they have truly captivating cards to hunt that are worth $$$. Everybody wins under this system. In the TCG however, almost every card in the set only has one rarity printing and the most desirable cards almost always the highest rarity printing, and there are more high rarity only cards in the set. This makes it harder to pull them from opening products. Pushing people to the singles market, where the prices are inflated because hardly anybody is opening product and the cards people want are only Ultras and above. Everybody loses. Stores because they can't shift product because it's not worth opening over singles. People who just want to play because the singles are now inflated in price. Collectors because there's only like 1-2 special rarity cards worth pulling in any set.

Oh, I can point it out for ya lad: The REAL Problem is that Konami is just a terrible company through and through, doing what's best for business only, being egotistical and constantly being stuck behind the curve of modern media, franchising and video gaming culture. You might disagree with me now and/or don't want to believe this, brushing my words off, but trust me, the longer you are a fan of the IPs this company hold, the sooner you will come to the realization that Yu-Gi-Oh's 'problems' aren't exclusive to Yu-Gi-Oh! at all.

The big issue is the fact that TCGland Konami will rarity spike popular archetypes or desirable staples which turns off more casual players as it's unlikely for them to pull those cards from packs due to the exclusive nature of the higher rarity cards. However, if there were a common or rare variant printed in the same set, players will be more likely to buy into the set as they'll be able to still be more likely to pick up those popular archetypes or desirable staples at the lower rarity while collectors and hunters can max out on the high rarity prints. The distribution of value would be leveled out and those $70 staples would have $4 common prints from the same set.

The other problem is that the conditions to be an average local hobby store don't exist anymore. You can't just be a guy who runs 7-8 games per week in his leased building and function off of a stats sheet of your average cases sold per set and buying somewhere around that each set. All the big tcg have lower general audiences than they used to, which means that you are catering to maybe 20-30 guys (depending on location) per game each set. You're just going to lose money if you don't buy cases proportionate to what those guys are interested in. Which also means knowing each of the games to some degree. Bad sets don't help but if you aren't profiting on the average sets then you'll always crash and burn eventually. There's no more little jimmies buying singles of bad sets because stardust dragon is printed on the front and they just finished watching an episode of 5ds

@rjknapp7459
@rjknapp7459 11 ай бұрын
@@colossaldonut5190 Rush Duels came into being because they wanted more kids to play the game, and the modern game is too complex for the average kid to wrap their head around. The main appeal of an anime to Konami is it can bring in kids and adolescents. And "I can Normal Summon Junk Synchron to grab Quillbolt Hedgehog and make Junk Warrior" works well in an anime and a kid can grok it. "I Normal Summon Spinny, Spinny into Balelinx who searches Sanctuary, Gazelle activates in my hand allowing me to Special Summon it" is a lot harder to make comprehensible, esp bc it doesn't accomplish much by itself, it's just by the end of the REST OF the combo you end up on something really strong. It's just become too hard to make an anime that represents the game and has appeal to ppl who'd watch it. And Rush is doing well in JP. It hits a different market and is easier for kids and also ofc adults to get into. I think it'd do well in the West if they'd bring it over. Easier to make look good in an anime, easier to teach people, games last more turns and so feel more interactive, and it has less complex gameplay than YGO's modern combofest. And more turns and less complex gameplay *is* something ppl have been asking for.

Maybe, and just hear me out: THEY SHOULD STRUCTURE SETS LIKE THE OCG AND REPRINT ACCESSIBLE STAPLES MORE OFTEN. They also need to slow tf down, but thats sort of an obvious issue at this point that everyone is cognizant of now. And YES, the frequency of the sets and having them this close together is bad for the game. Magic the Gathering was suffering from the exact same issue before their $1000 proxy fiasco, which just completely kneecapped the game's reputation. Like, unless you play or want to play Salamangreat or Volcanics (Battlin' Boxer looks like ass), who the fuck is going to buy that set? Konami has somehow funneled themselves into the same issue that Vanguard had before overDress, and this game doesnt even have non-mixing archetypes. How the fuck did that happen??? THERE'S ALSO THE FACT that you can't really build a competent deck by pulling packs from just a single set (unless you're a whale). This goes back to the problem that the TCG needs to structure sets like the OCG, but the fact that you HAVE to buy singles online to "affordably" build a deck for a decent archetype is just atrocious. The reason that Yugioh was popping off in 2021 was because Branded was a tier 1 deck that was super accessible due to the structure deck. The closest we have to that right now is Traptrix, which is only DEBATABLY a tier 2 deck.

Part of the problem does sit with the part of Konami that does the rarity changes for the TCG version of the Core Sets, because of how they rarity bump cards and make a lot of the chase cards into Secret Rares that are only 2 per box, which further disincentivises the purchase of boxes to pull cards.

This was a major problem that Vanguard had during V format. Every 2 months a new set would drop that would force players to pick up the new cards. The previous sets would instantly lose value or if the set was bad people would skip it knowing that the next set would be better. Stores would have to stop carrying Vanguard because sets would get outdated so fast they'd get stuck with unsellable product.

All yugioh sets need a complete design overhaul. Less set releases but make them bigger. Commons and rares have so few variety they have no value while ultras and secrets have all the value. Also, only having a tiny handful of cards get the high rarity slot is a missed opportunity. Make them easier to pull and give every card a high rarity version. So many times I pull a common that I fall in love with and wish I could buy a high rarity version of it but they don't exist. Back when it was just 5 starlights it was horrible, and when 2 or more are duds it's depressing. While these are just my opinions on what to do, in the end there are many good options and we NEED a change. Legendary Duelist Sets, Collector rare sets, main core sets, even the tins are failing. What does it take get them to try something new?! Please, Konami, just do something different before we lose even more stores.

The problem is in order for sets to maintain value, if not increase, they have to powercreep or else they’ll die. Last year, POTE and DABL were really expensive because they contained new archetypes that became meta, and contained staples that any deck could run (Bystials in DABL). This year, the problem is most cards aren’t as generically good as the two sets mentioned, and they can’t really powercreep as much as they did last year due to complaints.

People been saying this for years we don't need more banger, or rarity bumps. We need more affordable decks to get new players in the game. Like first time ash blossom got a structure deck reprint. We can have both. Rarity bumps like the OCG does means that decks are more accessible and affordable because they print a staple like Triple Tactics Thrust at both a Super rare, an Ultra, a Secret, and a Starlight, or the equivalent. You can get the low rarity ones for cheap and collectors/vendors can chase the highest rarity version in the set. And that applies to a ton of cards in each of their sets.

Genuinely curious if boxes would see more opening if we had the ocg rarity system. Part of me actually started to realise that buying boxes with like 2 targets of value really does burn people and keep them from opening more, so maybe if their were more hits even at a casual level like ultra/secret/starlight/ulti version of the card u like. It might hit the secondary market a bit as certain stuff would be a lot cheaper but maybe that wouldnt be as bad since it can get redistributed to more cards

As someone who tried to get into yugioh TCG as a casual player/collecor of stuff I like, I had to realise VERY quickly that I cannot afford this hobby whatsoever and switched to casually collecting stuff I like. 'Opening product is a waste of money. Rates for specific cards are so low, you need to shell out hundreds of euros for even half a deck of stuff that will jsut autolose to any and all handtraps, gloing second cards and foodgates, a playset of most of which cost more money than I spend for food in a month. Opening product means to accumulate tons of worthless cardbord for 5-6 times as much money as I think the packs are worth with current rates. Currently, I consider yugioh a rich people hobby, you need to be upper middle class to afford it. Well, or make it your new 2nd job and get deep into the secondary maarket, selling cards you do not need to run a profit. It's just not soething you can get into on a csual level. Look at structure decks. They're not a goddamn deck, you need 3 of them to build a deck. Is this some kind of sick joke? A structure deck should be a pre-built deck, with 3 copies of a few handtraps and every important engine piece+extra deck + side deck. As I see it, the rates of product and stuff like structure deck is engineered to milk the existing playerbase for as much as possible and is completely inaccessible to new players.

so what this tells me is that Konami is messing up product both for the distributors as much as the players. the issue is that the product themes don't have enough going on to sweep in enough attention for each of them to handle well enough for the cost. could be because of lack of general card interest. pull odds on the valued and needed cards, bad rarity amounts (I honestly wouldn't care if my entire deck was a "common" equiv, but i know others like that foil stuff while i couldn't give a toss), just being sick of the TCG departments crap... The easiest play would be to reduce costs for distributors to help lessen the blow of products that don't preform, but like a certain other companies i know they will not do that. So the next best option is improving the card quality, rarity, or sprinkling in those staples everyone goes on about into sets to make any old set worth picking up. it's ridiculous that a first set reprint did one of the best in this vid... I'm even less familiar on the OCG practices, but people seem to think their methods might be better? what do they do thats different? something to note though, is that this is the 25th anniverssary, which is amounting to a card pack shotgun of releases. maybe it wouldn't look so unsustainable if this was any non anniversarry year.

The issue is the product itself and how the product is designed by konami. The value of the entire product is tied up in the starlights and the "not short printed" short print secrets. Just look at the ocg, their chase cards come in both common/rare and secret/ulti/ghost so stores and players arent just relying on pulling the chase cards when they buy a box/case, they are likely to get at least close to the value of the box just from the regular pulls or rares/supers and the chase pulls are a nice bonus on top to keep them invested as its supposed to be. Konami tcg needs to start fixing their set design and bring in multiple rarities for cards that are looking to likely be chase cards (staples, top tier archetypes, etc). This also has the advantage of bringing in new players and helping them stick around since they dont feel excluded due to not having access to staples that are priced way too high for what most players is only supposed to be a hobby/casual endeavor.

At my local OTS we players made sure to inform the owner not to really bother with LED10, as we collectively had very little interest in it. And frankly if we the players attending events there aren't going to buy it, it'll just sit there barely selling. Alternatively for AGOV we're hyped so he'll probably end up getting in a extra case. I think we can help out just by communicating with store owners like this, Alot of owners won't have their ear to the ground about every product they stock so we can help them not make bad choices.

Look man. As much as I sympathize with collectors; yugioh is a game to be played. When you have cards gate kept but either rarity or just overall printing ratios that hurts the game on that front. Which is the primary front Konami is concerned with. At the end of the day I will always side with Timmy getting easier access to reprints and new cards as opposed to Boomer Bob preserving the value on his sealed/ghost collection.

I also want to note what I'll phrase as "hype burn", which I'm not saying as being burnt-out from having hype for each set. I'm saying by not spacing releases, I'd imagine you tank the previous because the distance between them separates the funds for sets and now you're only really running bright fuses for the people who need/really want new cards and not letting the progression of prices happen over a month or two. (I know the point was kinda made that people wouldn't want to pay every month from being annoyed, but I'd state that the choked flow of wealth definitely restricts the sets prices cause they want to make a more immediate profit.) I hope this is just a "25th anniversary blowout" and next year they can have the few core sets with battles of legend and legendary duelist, cause I think this year has been 4 cores, the legendary set, battles, 4 reprint sets, the tins

Part of the issue is power creep in the sense of either A. new cards being way too good or B. certain old cards outshining new cards. This has led me to want certain generic cards hit or banned, for example, if Accesscode gets banned that frees up to at minimum two extra deck slots and cyberese decks will actually try out new boss monsters like the new firewall or raging phoenix.

I honestly think they should bring powerful cards, that are fairly new and used often, back even more as low rarity reprints. Both Konami and the players would profit from it. Konami would not have to fill packs with newly designed cards when they could fill like 1/3 of the space with reprints of powerful staple cards. And we as players would profit from those reprints cause we wouldnt need to pay like 30 bucks for a single of copy of prosperity or other cards that are just way too expensive. It would give the players a reason to actually buy the sets if there were enough good cards reprinted in them and those that still want their shiny version of powerful staples can still just buy them on cardmarket or at local shops, if possible.

This retailer/vendor problem is extremely hard to grasped, not only for YGO for ALL TCGs. I used to worked in a LGS and I saw the prices for what the store gets the product and how the costs of the store has to be included for the costumer prices... combine this with the huge amount of different online sellers makes it extremely hard for a local store (regardless of they sell online or not) to really make any money with TCGs overall. About the set preorder for stores. They are mostly around 3-5 Months BEFORE release of the set... so yeah think about how they have to think about investing in a set.

Used to own an online Yu-Gi-Oh store in the UK. The only Yu-Gi-Oh distributor here is BLISS. Konami sets a booster box at the cost per pack, not the booster box. So they set the MSRP at £80-90 for a booster box. At the best Bulk discount rates for Boosters, you can't get about £1.25 per box from the distributor for buying 12 cases (144 booster boxes). That's it. The big online stores with bulk shipping rate deals can barely afford to sell at 5% about the bulk rate margins. For smaller stores, you do lose money on a 5% margin before shipping and taxes. It got to the point I stopped carrying booster boxes and only carried the specialty items (sleeves, deck boxes, mats) and releases like GFTP, gold boxes and tins. The margins on those were about 15% before shipping and taxes. Brock and mortar have to charges 30% just to cover the rent of the store. Yugioh is absolutely not profitable.

The problem with legendary duelist is that there arent enough hits in a display. 3 Ultras and you pay for an entire displays worth. A main set has 4 Ultras and 2 secrets. Thats DOUBLE the hits. Oh not to mention you have to get rid of all those worthless commons bc the the set is smaller. You probably pull like 150 of the same common in a case. That doesnt happen with main sets. Then the problem with the deck builder sets startet post Link era. I really wanted to buy these, bc they were my favorite product. You would buy 2 displays and would have had 3 complete decks. Thats impossible now. Now you have to pay 6 times that to complete your decks. Thats also why i havent bought anything yugioh related this year besides the structure decks and magnificent mavens. I am still looking forward to the tins. Not sure how many cards they reprinted there from the past deck builder sets. I hope alot.

I have a question regarding buying displays from vendors on cardmarket, tcgplayer, etc.: Is it a common practice for bigger vendors to open cases until the majority of high raritiy cards has been pulled and then selling off the rest of displays? Or maybe using other methods of scanning through a case your average customer isn't familiar with? And if yes, are there ways around this as a buyer, eg buying a display from local stores? Additional question: Are methods like this permitted in general? Kind regards

I think most people have the right points, but I think the biggest issue is still wayyyyyy too frequent release of products. Regardless of their quality, most players just cannot afford to buy in every single set if you release a product every month, if not more frequently. Then you come down to quality of each product which forces stores to sit on sets that they lost money on. Like what I tell Blizzard copers though; there's very little reason for Konami TCG to change their practice if whales are going to keep feeding them money. If the playerbase tolerate crap, why would the company give them something better?

I very firmly stand by my point, and believe this video affirms it. The cheapest version for any card should NOT be above $20 at its cheapest, but in exchange, you have options to search for lottery versions of each card. You want to build a deck on the cheap? Great! Odds are high pulling from packs will get you lower rarity cards of at least decent value, or at least be desired by one or more players. You want to show off a blingy deck? Then by all means, gives further incentive to buy packs, as at worst, you get common or rare staples that help ease the loss of buying packs, and it still gives reasons to buy booster boxes on every level. Vendors will get tons of staples to sell, plus lottery cards. Lower level players will get occasional lottery cards that make them feel great buying packs, and can trade them for lots of the staples, and higher-level foil hunters have cards to hunt for!

Some Distributors will defiantly let you pick and choose in YuGiOh. Konami is print to order, they do not allocate the Distributors like Pokemon TCG. It makes the distributors happier if you order every set, obviously, but I have no idea why they would allocate anyone assuming they order within the Pre-Order window, which is about 4 months before the release date. Honestly the reason it's hard to pick and choose in YGO as a game store is because there isn't a lot of information out on the set by the time you have to have Pre-Orders in. Cards are revealed in the OCG, but every new card gets a lot of hype and so it's hard to know what's worth the investment.
@levizaman7539
@levizaman7539 11 ай бұрын
I'm going a bit against what you said, the amount of product certainly has something to do with the amount they're selling. I'm a collector of YGO as well as a player and if they would bring 1 set every 2-3 months it would be more sustainable to keep up financially. €120 (2 boxes) every 2 weeks (as it is now) is €720 over a course of 3 months, that's not doable for a "normal" wage person with kids. Hence, i only collect the core sets/SD's and tins (btw, i liked the old style of tins better. 1 promo card and the rest where packs from sets released between this tin and the previous one). will also be buying the 25th collectors set though as the exception. Another problem is the time between release from OCG and TCG, TCG-players know what's coming months prior to the actual release (and more often than not even 2-3 sets prior to the next release we're getting) so we can carefully decide which sets are going to be worth our €/$/£/... and just buy the singles we need from the other sets.

Most vendors do make their money with selling single booster and singles. As far as I know they don't sell too many boxes but booster are quite lucrative. You pay 4,5€ here for a booster and I see so many players buy some booster occassionally. But Commons are fairly expensive. Many shops are selling their commons for around 1€. So most likely that's how they survive. But no matter, I think Rarity Distribution should be more fair. Otherwise it kinda feels like you can pay to win, if I afford Thrusts or Prosperities my Deck will most likely be better. That shouldn't be the case...

Im really happy to have the new Volcanic, Boxer, and Salamangreat stuff, but really just to dork around with friends. Im under no illusion they are not competitively viable and the set from that standpoint is a huge bust. Lots of stores in my area have started dropping yugioh either because there is no locals scene or theres too much product that they only sell the latest pack and structure deck only. No singles, no boxes, no players interested. They also had issues with stealing and fighting so the stores just figured it wasnt worth it anymore. Now I have to drive 3 hours to find another shop and I'd rather put that energy in Master Duel. The only ones who suffer are LGS. They are bleeding money on this game, even though YCS numbers are up, people are getting pickier with their disposable income and a gotcha game is hardly a good investment anymore. Maybe as a kid when we had the world by the ass, but not when our rent keeps going up.

I wanted to touch on this on a prior comment, and this is slightly off the topic of what ruxin is saying, but I think Tistina legitimately models the ideal rarity distribution: you have 3-of archetypal ultras, so there's _some_ value among higher rarity cards, but the secret rare is just a 2-of at best, so the number of cores for the deck, unless the next wave of support changes things, is not hard capped by the number of playsets of a secret rare that can be pulled. In terms of more meta examples, Ariseheart was a great choice to be a secret, Wraithsoth was a greedy choice.

I think Konami forgot that they are the manufacturer and they need downstream distributors to sell their products. If you work in supply chain related jobs, you'd clearly see that the way they set MSRP is problematic cause there is no backing of the value of the product. I think a big issue is just the amount of legacy support. Like, yes, I understand that it's cool to see some Fire King support or some Volcanic support, but the sheer amount of it is staggering. Nowadays we can't go two weeks without Konami announcing yet another bunch of cards that are based on a thing that you know; not only is this only exciting for a very small portion of the community but it is also unlikely to make a big impact in the first place, so, as a set, it will lose value. Another issue, in my opinion, is the removal of several rarities of the same card from main sets; starlights are way too rare for the average Joe to want to buy product and only appear in the first printings anyway. I used to purchase boxes pretty regularly, but nowadays I only do if the set is actually good and I am likely to break even myself, which isn't that often. Finally, I think we also all should come to grips with the "loot box" nature of the game and how that should probably just change; the throughline here is just that cases, boxes, and even packs are of unknown value. You might win big, but you also might not.
