if this was a modern airconditioner and it was sitting for 40 yrs, say u turn it on in 2057, i bet the compressor would not work. vintage stuff rules!!

We just junked our AC. We moved here 21 years ago. The previous owners left it. Here in San Antonio,TX we once had a factory. That air-conditioner worked great till 2nites ago. I knew it was a good AC unit I thought it was from the 60s. It was a Quitmaster. Served us well it did die finally. We loved it.

This was a great find for you. I had this same air conditioner and it was by far the best I ever had. It cooled the top floor of my house underneath the roof with no problem, turning it into a refrigerator. This brought back many memories!

Oh it did not turn house into refrigerator. Be honest. Refrigerators are like 40 to 45 degrees F.

This Quietmaster series was made from 1976 through 1983. Your particular unit, an "E" modification from the original "D", was made in 1980. The compressor is a Copelaweld "S" line, twin cylinder, 2-pole, hermetic design. Overall you have an excellent unit which, if maintained, should last for many years. My family had a 1967 Friedrich window unit which, when replaced with central air conditioning, was still running perfectly after 44 years. It never broke and was steam cleaned about every three years. After 44 years of service, it was sold to a neighbor who still uses it. It is amazingly free of rust. Keep your unit clean, especially the condenser coil. I don't recommend drilling any holes in the basepan. Creeping rust, as it is called, will certainly start in drilled holes and will undermine the correct operation of the unit. The unit's design is for condensate to accumulate in the sump below the condenser fan and allow the fan's slinger to vaporize the condensate in the superheated condenser air stream. This provides an additional evaporative cooling of the condenser. Some units even have a superheat coil mounted in the basepan which needs to be submerged in condensate. Friedrich units have very good rust protection, unlike most other brands, and if kept clean should last for years. Good luck with your Friedrich!

How does one clean a wall unit like this?
@arcticarrowhvacr5 жыл бұрын
@@mattfoley6082 Matt, Very cool to see you here! To clean a slide out chassis through the wall air conditioner, one must remove the chassis from the sleeve. Take the unit itself outside and apply coil cleaner to both the condenser coil and evaporator coil, let that sit 5 minutes and wash everything down with a hose. This results in better efficiency and a lower electric bill. Do you have a wall unit that needs to be cleaned?
@mattfoley60825 жыл бұрын
@@arcticarrowhvacr Not possible for one man to remove chassis and take outside for cleaning, too heavy. I had to figure something out and came up with this: put stepladder in front of unit, slide chassis out about halfway and rest on top of ladder, run garden hose from laundry room, spray coils. Water drains outside. Slide chassis back in. Run fan only for several minutes to dry. Fortunately the ladder is the correct height, just a few inches lower than the a/c. How do you clean the styrofoam where cool air comes out? Mold can form there.

These are amazingly made air-conditioners I used to sell them years ago I owned one in my own house I dare any air-conditioner built today to compare to the quality and strength that these vintage air-conditioners had. Had this same 24,000 cool The top floor of my house which was under a flat roof it had no problems only issue was that we really could not sit in the living room where the air-conditioner was because it was freezing some of my friends ran out.

Very cool! Notice the compressor slowed down a little bit during the first ever startup? I guess that was from never running for 40 years. This thing blows colder than airconguys's Philco Ford Noiseless!

I did notice the compressor running slow for a bit. It doesn't do that anymore, guess it was just the first run. and yea, this thing blows ice! You can't hold your hand in front of it for long!
@rickmontgomery30377 жыл бұрын
By the way, I agree with the others on the year, it's likely late 70's/early 80's. I was hoping to see a print year on one of manuals/cards in the fine print but there wasn't one. But what I did see was on the warranty card it lists Public Law 94-163; I looked it up and it's a conservation law enacted in 1975, so that eliminates the possibility of the unit being manufactured in 1970.

I have a similar model that, if I read the model # correctly, it appears to be SL19C30 (?), and it just died. Mine was 18,500-19000 BTU. Having the hardest time replacing it because of the existing hole in the wall, (newer units are not the same size even though Friedrich claims the sleeve sizes haven't changed in 45 years), the new units are mixed to poorly reviewed, and the new replacement model "equivalents" are expensive but have less than ideal track record. :'(
